He does not say 'yeh Vilayat Khansahab' What you heard is not what he said. Not that mentioning Vilayet Khan's Sahib name is anything bad. However, this man was trained under his father, Ustad Aziz Khan Sahib. Between you and I and the rest of the classical lovers, this man has taken this instrument to another level.
this is real khandan music. amazing control and ultimate perfection. great music. you dont have to understand grammer to tell this is great music
but see how lovingly he says 'yeh Vilayat Khansahab' and reminds the audience about the phrase that was imortalised by Vilayat Khan. this has made my day.
Awesome clip, I've been rewinding and playing this 100's of time, specially 00:05 - 00:12, people were so lost into the bliss that he had to ask for Irshaad, "irshaad kiya jaye". Amazing Pilu, thanks for making this clip available to all of us.
Don't worry about it, if that's what you saw in the entire clip, then you won't get it. BTW, the man is oblivious of his surroundings, he is talking to his sitar.
this kind of facial expressions don´t mean "this? oh this is nothing!" nearly every classical musician of the region around india has expressions like this, or head shaking as if they say "no". its just being into it and enjoying. being proud is against music philosophy of classical eastern music, cause your learning your whole life.
If you think he is proud by the way his facial expressions are- the you should look at every other sitarist... It's called enjoying your music, not ego...
the problem is not the sitarist ...the problem is the need for attention from the audience.. and teh transformatyion of an interior experience in a sacred sanctuary to a galleryseeting...
this kind of music must be heard in darkness in a cave so thatone can travel to the core of sound as God and not be distracted by facial gestures to communciate somethingwhich is 1000 times more advanced than facial gestures......
also if you really tried to pull on those tans youll get really ugly facial expression as these pulls are like doingehavyweights in a gym, so it is probable that after accomplishing mastery of the pull musicians invest in creating pleasing facial gestures
Such a souldful rendition. سبحان اللھ

About a minute after I posted that I looked up surbahar and it was obvious I was wrong, thanks.
almostbetterthansile 5 years ago
I don't think that's a sitar, I think it's a surbahar, a bass sitar, played without accompaniement and with very long held notes that slowly decay.

believe me an artist needs to masterthe art of hiding the pain and showing hapiness instead..
lordshivatheboatman 2 years ago
I agree, great he is, but has a tendency to play to the gallery. Look at Ustad Amir Khan in contrast.
