  • It is such a beautiful song. An exellent singer. Thanks for sharing

  • How beautiful this land and also the song. Thanks. mlG. Kurt

  • @bugstrut Ever hear of Fletcher Christian? He is one of my relatives. :)

  • @wizard1globe arrrr! shivert me timbers lad!!

  • My Uncle Aunty(she was true manx) and my cousins lived on the Island which is a beautiful place, sadly they are no more, buried thereto lie to rest forever on Ellan Vannin.

  • That´s a beautyful song sung by a beautyful voice which gives to a beautyful land even more beaty.

  • Long live the revival! I hope everyone speaks Manx 50 years from now!

  • @mackerel47 Manx is very like Irish but Manx is pronounced in an English way rather than a Gaelic way. Manx has a spelling system based on English. As a result the spelling is totally unrelated to the grammatical structure. I'd be interested to find out how this came to be. Irish and Scots Gaelic do have a spelling system related t their grammatical structure.

  • Oh dear did I upset someone!!!!!!I think I replied to the wrong comment. Bottom line is I'm Manx by birth, I love all aspects of the Isle of Man, my Ellan Vannin. I have travelled the world and now live in France but I wish I could "go home" but time is running out, but it will always be my true home.

I would like to contact my friend of the 40,s Douglas Crebbin Faragher, a Manx

speaker who edited the column in the "Weelky Hearld). I lived above the printing room as a child.

    I could go on !

  • What is it about monolingual English speakers who are out to trash other cultural groups ? Who can't give others space to speak their language ? Why does he/she they take a demeaning tone and fail to appreciate the pleasure of the other ?

her Majesty QE2 speaks French as well as English, her son speaks Welsh and English. Enjoy diversity.

  • I love this song and Ellan Vannin . The Isle of Man is so beautiful wonderful video the amazing pictures .

  • This is my heritage,I am so proud my people came from Isle of Man!

  • Climbed Snaefell today. Had this playing in my head the whole time...

  • To all those people who call it manx : it is actually manx gaelic due to the vikings :D

  • A beautiful rendition, of surely, the British Isles' most evocative anthem. ( and I am aware that the true Manx anthem is "O Land of our Birth"!)......Long live the Isle of Mann!!

  • AAAAAAAHHHHHHH, this Song is so beautiful, thanks from Switzerland

  • I reckon theres more people living on the mainland with a right to live in the IOM than have homes there.....Money eh?

  • @garyjcropper Sorry, what? Do the Manx people really hate the English?

  • @bugstrut most :D n its manx gaelic :D

  • @bugstrut

A LOT of them do, yes. Although it isn't a hatred that is shouted from the rooftops but rather one of a feeling of superiority and looking down their nose at anyone who isn't officially Manx (both parents, grandparents and the person them self must be born on the island to officially qualify as Manx) .

  • Such a beautiful song..

I may not be from even the western hemisphere of the world, but this song is so.. I don't think there are words to describe the beauty of this song. At best, I can say Inspiring.

  • I'll go back to Ellan Vannin...

  • this song makes me so proud to be manx i born and bread im 17 and i love it good old isle of man

  • This is such a powerful song. This became even more special to me following my visit to the Isle of Man for a concert a few years ago. Love it so much.

  • Heard this track on the tv, an audience with the beegees, I thought it was haunting when sung without music, but this version?, wow!!!!!, this version is better, never heard a song like it, wish I could go buy it, pity the bee gee's never released it, only 2 words adequately describe it, hauntingly beautiful, never been to the isle of man, but hope to soon.

  • @igormerlin44 is a gorgeous place, but unless you are wealthy, wait until you have a lottery win......

  • My kinsmen are Manx. I cry every time I hear this. My wish is to someday go to the Isle. Thank you for posting.

  • @Policemama you will need to win the lottery/Euromillions to go There...........check the Steam Racket prices and flights etc. Take an Aspirin first.........

  • The text is far too invasive

  • manchester paul loves this

  • the pic at 2.51 is where my hubby wants to live x

  • this must be the best unofficial national anthem and nationa lanthem by far and im not even frm the isle of man. its just amazing

  • this should be played at cerimonies instead of that other imperial shit O land of our birth

  • my roots are traced back here..I need to go there someday.

  • For those who've been to the Isle of Man and seen its many Glens and hidden places, then you'll know of its beauty and tradition. For those who've been around a while, then you'll have at least heard of its Mysterious and veiled secrets. For those who know of the Mystical side, then its better to keep things to oneself, don't you?

  • @manxy007 you are so fortunate.....

  • @manxy007 I am half Manx and my biggest dream is to visit the Isle of Man.

  • @wizard1globe When you say you're Manx, how far back do your Manx roots go?

  • @manxy007 What secrets?

  • @manxy007 I have had this and the same musical version (lietuva007) which I play often. I have tried to obtain a CD, to be able to play this at my funeral, to NO avail. This particular arrangement is so moving, and is a constant reminder when I am away from the Island. Any Help or suggestions ??

  • This is a beautiful anthem for a beaufiful isle. LOVE IT :) Since i heard the Bee Gees sinnging it on a tv show in 1998 I have been looking for it everywhere. Thanks for posting.

  • It's very good but I think the titles would have been better in a smaller font and placed at the foot of the screen.

  • brings back so many fond memories of my childhood! every summer was spent in the Isle Of Man cant wait to go back there this year hopfully. Be proud of the song! its beautiful

  • this makes me so proud !! , i was crying :') , thanks for a great upload :')

  • I'd forgotten how lovely the Isle of Man really is. Beautiful video! What I haven't been able to discover is if there is a history of witch hunts there (as there is in other places) as I am writing a story about a young girl witch from Malew and want to come up with a context for the character.

  • @manxy007 Shut up.

  • ellan vannin my chree

  • beautiful theme,,Robin does it so well. Im a nz'er and i admire the scenery and land of the Isle of Man

  • The Isle of Man is the best kept secret on God's earth. If you live here long enough it becomes a love affair, sometimes not fully appreciated until you have to leave. They can play this at my funeral.

  • im a manxy and always will be and i will listen to this song when ever im down and remember all the times i've been down but nothing has kept me down i hope all of you feel the same way i do when ui hear his it makes me feel like im on top of the sky and im realy happy

  • A beautiful compilation, first time I've seen it though. Fiercely proud Manxman.

  • These lyrics fit 'The Carnival is Over' by The Seekers perfectly. This a verynice melody too though.

  • VAT back NOW please

  • that was so beautiful-- i mean, all of it. ; ; i wish we had a song & scenery like these.

  • I so wish I could get this version on itunes!

  • This makes me so proud to be manx :D

  • this song by robin gibb is the best thing ever to come from the isle of man.

  • @untied1000 no, it's not the best thing to come from the isle of man. yes, it's a beautiful song, but have you even heard the local work? the young and old musicians alike who keep the culture alive? Ellan Vannin (Robin Gibb) isn't even classed as a "traditional" manx song.

  • @CederickDavidson You can be,i love I.O.M,nice people,i went 10 times for TT,i cry each times i left

  • @CederickDavidson Same Here

  • What an absolutley perfect song- makes me proud to be manx.! :) Duggan. (Onchan)

  • This song fits Beethoven's Ode to Joy perfectly.

  • Beautiful scenery - could easily be Ireland.

  • superb great song great singer the real voice of the beegees

  • My great grandparents were Manx speakers. Their surname Mylchreest is the Manx version of MacGilchreest which derives from the Gaelic "MacGiolla Chriosod" which means 'the son of Christ's servant.'

  • im a mylchreest :)

  • Are you in IOM? My people settled in Liverpool in the 1890s. GGF was born in Rushen and GGM was born in Arbory. They were both Mylchreests but not related.

  • yea im from IOM and my family comes from malew :P

  • I've got Mylchreest ancestors buried at Malew Cemetery you're probably a distant relation.

  • @slayr747

    I'm a Quayle :P

  • i lived in douglas from 1980-84. the term was in regular use. doolish ellan vannin? it was a long time ago...

  • I have lived on the Isle Of Man all my life it's a beautiful place and should be appreciated more

this is not the proper anthem but it still shows how much the Isle Of Man is loved by many people anybody who thinks differently is entitled to their own opinion but should still respect us.

  • I really love the Isle of Man, was there back in 2006. Brilliant place. Great place for history and hiking.

  • At 1:54 is that Cregneash? I had some nice Bonnag cake at the tearoom there but couldn't figure out where the 'living museum' actually began!

  • Shortly after Harry Kelly and Ned Madderel died, I suspect.

  • Yes that is Cregneash or (Creneash in Manx)

Not far away is meayll circle.

There are also 3 ancient mound sites near St Lukes Church where Tynwald once met and the road leads off to the Chasms where people jump across the terrifying drop below.

  • IOM has the oldest parliament in the world and therefore has its own "form" of governement bt whether u like it or nt its part of Britain sunny jim....told so by the teachers of the IOM in QE2 highschool PEEL

  • @69BelfastBOI69: Depends on the Definition of Britain. Britain can mean Great Britain, of which it is not a part, it can mean the UK which it is not a part, or it can mean the British Isles, of which it is a part. I'm sure it mean other stuff as well, but point is depends on which definition you mean.

  • Oh, no... only the adequate answer for your comment

  • Robins voice and the melody is so beautiful.

    I like the melancholic sound.

  • I, didn't know that Mongolia were celtic... Thank you for telling me

  • Its peel

  • From Asturias (Spain), another Celtic Country... Thank you for this marvelous video. I,m collecting the National Anthems of the Celtics Countries, and dreaming with a day in we can see the Union of the eight Celtic Countries: Alba, Eire, Ellan Vannin, Cymru, Cornu, Breizh, Galiza and Asturies

  • Don't know, but if you find it let us know.

  • I'm manx, but live in England, yet I feel more at home on that island then the town I've lived in all my life. I actually cried hearing this song, it made me miss that place so much. I only get to visit once a year if that, so the web is literally my only contact. Its weird how no-one where I lived knew about the isle of man, then I turned up and most people will hear you mention the name will say, "That bloody Quilliam girl tells about that place."

    I wish I was there now. :(

  • Robin's voice is the best.

    He could make you cry!

I would like to visit sometime the island.

By the way, I'm from Argentina.

    Regards.

  • why dont you go back then !

  • Like many Manx living abroad ( for various reasons) I appreciate the posting as it gives a point of contact.

The original Manx National Anthem that I learned at school still feels so much a part of the Manx culture.

    "Oh land of our birth,

    Oh gem of God's earth,

Oh Island so strong and so fair,

    Built firm as Barrule,

    The throne of home rule,

Makes us free as thy sweet moutain air"

Ellan Vannin is a beautiful composed and beautifully sung tribute to a truly beautiful Island.

    Thanks

  • i love Robins voice, more more more please,

  • wow Robin....great voice ;)

  • Hi

I am a kiwi who loves his homeland like nothing else.

But I am absolutely enamoured with this song and love these visions of Ellan Vannin.

  • Brilliant,,,wish it was the national anthem for all of britain

  • The IOM is not part of britain.

  • Shoctu Radio Vannin! This Is Manx Radio!

  • Superb!!

  • My apologies guess I got a little bit carried away there.Ha!

  • Wow!!!!!!! SOOOOO Beautiful!!!!!!!!Tis so adamantly beautiful!!!!!!Thank-you for the UK's beauty!!!!Lord Robin is so complemented by the bagpipes!!!!Accolades forever!

  • Nice comment, only that the Isle of Man is only administered by the UK, though it isn't a part of the UK.

  • Robin Gibb at his best!

  • Thanks for submitting this, thelaird1 - it is absolutely beautiful. How can I get a copy of this version by the Bee Gees? I would be most grateful for any information, if you please.

    Many thanks!!

  • Hello. If you've got Real Player, you can download the video, then copy it to DVD. The version by the Bee Gees was released in 1998

  • ive got an autographed copy, which i treasure very much, much to my neighbours dismay. +100 decibels, lol

  • shen yndyssagh!

  • Very good. *****

  • Nevermind Shamraig...he is only happy when he is miserable, poor sot.

  • Thank you.

  • This is NOT the Manx National Anthem despite being a good tune. PS Bee Gee first gig was in Purt Le Moirrey town hall!!!

  • Pray, educate us as to the true National anthem...give it to us in Manx Gaelic if you can. How many Manx can actually speak their native language? Post statistical information on this as well. Inquiring minds would love to know.

  • O Halloo nyn ghooie,

    O'Chliegeen ny's bwaaie,

Ry gheddyn er ooil aalin Yee,

    Ta dt'Ardstoyl Reill-Thie,

    Myr Barrool er ny hoie,

Dy Reayll shin ayns seyrsnys as shee.

Nollick ghennal as Blein Vie Noa.

  • Merry Christmas to you as well.

  • does the gaelg vertion go to the same tune?

  • Well, as many people know, manx is a dead language, but however its not.

My sister is doing manx for her GCSE and she wrote a whole book in manx, i learnt a small bit of manx and may manx do actually speak it as their mother tounge, but alot of others speak english. They do learnt it in school though.

  • I think the Manx Government (Reiltys Ellan Vannin) should really do more to enforce the Manx language. Its like, for 200 years, the Manx speakers were losing both their language and their culture, and its like, finally, after 150 years of negligence, the Government is taking note. I'm currently trying to learn Manx, and have been for about a year now. I believe that Manx is the most beautiful language in the world, and if ever it should perish, at least I'll know it. Slaynt!

  • I agree wholeheartedly that the Manx language should be kept, promoted and be a source of pride. Though not a Manxman, I always loved to hear the lovely ladies from Manx airlines announce a welcome to the Island every year in Manx Gaelic. Very sexy indeed - better than French even!

  • That must be quite a spectacle, though if you've ever read "The Last of the Celts" by Marcus Tanner, it is stated that such scenarios such as bilingual welcome signs are only a fake mockup.

At the least, this may have answered my desire for the Manx Reiltys to do more for their language. It's like, before, Manx people were embarassed to speak their native tongue, especially in the big cities such as Douglas and Ramsey, where more anglophones were. Now they've finally took note and are proud!

  • @IlStudioso I don't think it's -the- most beautiful language, but it is certainly a wonderful one :) I stopped learning Manx a few years ago, but I still sing in it with Choir and when performing.

  • 'and many manx do actually speak it as their mother tounge' - please don't lie in such an obvious fashion. The last native manx speaker died in the 70's. There is no-one over the age of 16 to whom it is their primary language. Okay?

  • @maureenOWW "no-one" is a big of an exaggeration... There are a few people still alive who speak manx as their primary language. maybe not the one they learned from birth, but still their primary.

I know several people who are fluent in Manx, and speak it more often than English. Then, of course, we have GCSEs and A-Levels in Manx Gaelic.

  • @AtharAqua There are many more people who speak Klingon or Elvish (lord of the rings) fluently, I wouldn't call those a viable language either.

  • @maureenOWW so you're saying that Manx Gaelic is not a viable language?

  • @AtharAqua When al the fluent speakers can fit together in a single room then I think it's a waste of education. Think of the resources wasted in schools because of this....should kids learn about Manx, which will serve them no good in their lives, or...well....anything.....ancient greek philosophy would do them far more good.

  • @maureenOWW there are far more people who are fluent in Manx Gaelic than you seem to think. People who know Manx -chose- to learn it. How is that a waste of educational resources? Ancient Greek Philosophy would be far more redundant to manxfolk than our own language. Put aside your own bias for a moment, please. Do not insult the Manx speakers simply because of your opinion.

  • @AtharAqua 'People who know Manx -chose- to learn it. How is that a waste of educational resources? Ancient Greek Philosophy would be far more redundant to manxfolk than our own language.' - when I was in school manx was a compulsary subject (in 1980s 90s), hence a waste. Secondly it's not 'our own language'. That is english. It has been for centuries. Thirdly, classical philosophy is the basis of western civilisation, there can be no greater subject to enlighten the mind.

  • @maureenOWW wish I was a polyglot ......

  • @sturdle wish I was a polygon

I have many different sides to my character.

    Laugh, you muppet.

  • @maureenOWW ah well...... x

  • @AtharAqua I'm not insulting manx speakers, I'm just saying they're irrelevant.

  • @maureenOWW All languages are irrelevent, we should all just learn Interlingua.

  • @AtharAqua

Just a mo. Our heritage, our history, is Manx our language is not only beautifu;l but historic. It is NOT English but Gaelic of which true Manx are proud. When I was at school in the late 40's we were not taught Manx and I learned it later. I am proud to be able to speak with a native tounge.

  • @blootette heyhey, don't reply to -me- xD" I'm sticking up for Gaelic. It's maureenOWW who's being ignorant. I, myself, speak very little Manx, but I -do- sing in the language at choir.

I may not be a Manxgirl by blood, but I am at heart.

  • I love it because to me, its more than a song, its part of the Island itself i live there and it may not be the National Anthom but its still, to me a beautiful song, i learnt the National Anthon in school and i do actually think this should be the anthon, its expresses the island more.

  • @shamraig LOL!!! I've never been a fan of slow, gentle music either.

  • Went to my mates mum's funeral today and this was played at the end of the service, what a beautiful send off, rest in peace Norma we all loved you. What a moving song!

  • I must take a trip to the Island one day. So beautiful and the song.
