very great video here for those interested in street/self defense grappling options. i'm a huge mma fan, but groundfighting for self defense is a whole different game. it's all about getting back to your feet asap. you bite, gouge, fish hook, break a finger, or pull a blade before dudes buddys start stomping you out. trad jj was designed for just that, get up and get back to your sword. self defense means doing ANYTHING that gets you home in one piece
plus you dont need to be fighting if you need to be taught how to grab people's ears, stick fingers in butt holes and poke them in the eyes. thats not self defense
@keepbjjsimple i would respectfully disagree my friend, that is EXACTLY what self defense is. doing whatever it takes to get home . i'm a fan of BJJ, but even the Gracie's did not allow biting, etc. in their bouts. it was a one on one fight, and a tough one i agree, but it wasn't a street fight with absolutely no rules or limits on the number of bad guys. BJJ is a fantastic art, but it does not cover variables such as eye gouging and biting and cutting tools in its ground game in general.
You idiots apparently havent ever taken a brazilian jiu-jitsu class. What he is doing IS a sloppy version of brazilian jiu-jitsu. Instead of grabbing ears, picking his op's nose, and grabbing penises... you best keep your elbows to your side or youll end up with a broke arm against a real fighter. Go ahead an pay to take a real Gracie Jiu-Jitsu self defense class and it will help you 1000 times more than you making up crap.
@keepbjjsimple Hatmaker is talking from a Boxing-submission wrestling background, no doubt Jujitsu and submission wrestling have similar techniques because they both have their origin in Pankration (Roman fighting systems) - I don't doubt BJJ's effective as I box & do BJJ & JJJ but this video looks like its from about 15 to 20 years ago in the infancy of US knowledge of BJJ so what you see here is not as refined as today - however as WW2 veterans have often said a bite or eye gouge is effective.
I wouldn't call that teaching at all. I would call showing off if you ask me. I love watching Roy Dean's videos. They are much more tutorial than this. I hope this guy know that not all of are black belts. When he's showing all those escapes, there are many little important details that the average viewer or beginning BJJ guy is missing.
damn nic vid i just learned the leg and arm trap to get out of mount and the way i learned is the way that leaves me suseptible to a heel hook good to know
You could trap an arm and do a bridge and a roll / heist. A good bridge at a 45-degree angle gets the job done. Alternately, you can arm drag. In the street, you may not want to body lock, unless you want your head driven into the concrete. The key is not to stay flat: get on your hip and be active. Basic wrestling can get you out of this position.
PUt a four year wrestler at 160 against a grappler like me thats been doing it for 4,5 years also 160ish I dont think just a bridge would do it. Your right though stay active. few ways to get out i guess.
@Zoose900 It's not just a bridge, which wouldn't work -- at least, not like many people bridge. You need one arm controlled (generally, via whizzer); your bridge needs to be at about a 45-degree angle and must be done properly (side of head and shoulder on the mat); you wind up perpendicular to your starting position after you roll. We have a vid here on youtube, I think. Search Cecchine reversal from mount, or click on the name to go to our channel.
Very nice stuff here. I liked the biting and rips. Very effective. That warning against reversing by trapping the foot with the knee bent was golden. Thanks a lot. You have any instructional tapes for sale??
Great video, I like how you explained things. This is more for self defence not competeing, not everyone how attacks someone has training, and a little bit of knowlege can go a long ways.
If I had someone in the mount and they bit me it'd be pretty cool. As I see it, it'd give me a green light to destroy the little Douche. I could just show the police officer the bite mark and explain that that's why I felt justified in using the extreme force that I did. After all, If I've punched and elbowed all of his teeth out he can't bite me any more can he!?
biting and eye gouging isnt even that effective... theres so many ways to counter those attacks effectively , if someone kicks u in the balls get them to the ground and lean on them till the pain goes away then make them pay.most bjj black belts train mma anyway so its not very likely that they will win , in fact its almost impossible to win a decent mma fighter if u arent trained...
Totally agree, u get these assholes with no fighting or training expierence, just with bad attitudes, thinking they can just use dirty techniques to overcome years of proven fighting moves. I wanna see someone try to bite a good bjj fighter, they'll be a sleep so fast, or eye gauge a good boxer, they'll eat so many puches. Dirty moves or techniques only work if u have a good base in the combat arts, Boxing, Thai Boxing, Bjj, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo, Kali, etc, etc.
DOES ANYONE HERE know a way to ESCAPE A Back Mount/Rear Mount laying face down?
I know that is nearly impossible to attack an opponent who is mounted directly behind one's back and if the opponent does not have the legs hooked or chest to back contact, it is possible to roll into the mount.
But is there an afficient way for a small victim vs a heavy stronger oponent to make an escape from this position?
i'm pretty sure hatmaker will get ko'ed and even submitted by a lot of pro fighters out there. but hes a pretty good instructor and with a hell lot of good stuffs to teach. i always get that needed 'extra detail' when i watch his vids. Most good fighters are bad teachers...and most of the good teachers are bad fighters... that goes with other sports as well. keep postin' sheng81.
What's interesting about your comment, is that it seems to imply that pro fighters don't get submitted or knocked out. And for someone to state the teacher = bad fighter is "actually true" and a "good comment" is pretty ignorant. Show me proof of the data this "truth" comes from, please. Someone who applies a proper arm bar on a resisting opponent, and trains every day. Is doing exactly what you people say he can't do, fight. Training is harder than fighting, if it isn't, your not training.
You are not sure of anything except hot air, what the hell do you know. As for instruction Angelo Dundee was not renowned for being a great fighter, but a great trainer. Don't be ignorant with such comments makes you look naive and arrogant with no reason.
this guy is a joke. as soon as you reach for my eyes you will be getting a nice armbar. Every whitebelt in BJJ knows to look for an armbar from the mount. we are all waiting for you to straighten your arms buddy.
catchtom, i thought it was cool. Yea in jiu jitsu you can arm bar him but he was talking about "self defense". He was talking about a street situation. Most people on the street don't know jiu jitsu. i like his other moves. pretty on point.
yeah, it's always easy to say "if he did this, I'd do this!" so whatever. And you'd think that "every BJJ whitebelt" would know that to pretty much every move there's a counter. How many books and videos on NHB and self defense have you authored, catchtom?
BJJ moves are made for sport purposes. these are very good sd moves. In BJJ you don't train for biting, groin hits etc. You can be BJJ black belt, but still get beaten up on the streets. Don't get me wrong, I think BJJ is one of the best ground fighting systems along with sambo, but there are many brutal ground techniques that are not included in BJJ.
Who do you think is going to have a better chance of biting and gouging? A BJJ world champion who knows how to control a person on the ground, or a "self defense expert" who spends his training time pretending to bite and gouge people? Yes, there are many things you can do in the street that you can't do in BJJ or MMA, but don' t be fooled into thinking that pretending to bite people is a moe effective training method.
@Jarovortex ever heard of vale tudo??? it was invented by the brazilians. in vale tudo many of the moves that are illegal in the UFC are legal. like head butting, etc,. VALE TUDO IS NOT A SPORT. it's a real fight where anything goes. vale tudo means anything goes in portugese. it's alot more brutal than the UFC. you are talking about sport jiu jitsu. sport jiujitsu sucks. in many schools, they teach you all the eye gouges, biting, fish hooking, etc. before they give you a black belt in BJJ.
@Jarovortex hi, don´t forget that a bjj guy will have advantages on his side to add "many brutal ground techniques that are not included in BJJ" to his techniques. greetings, bye.
@Jarovortex i agree with you. BJJ is only for sport purpose. Sadly many guys out there beleive that BJJ is the best in ground fightng. I do agree that it will provide some useful hints when taken to the floor but it is sport orientated. techniques are not very practical for street purpose especially when faced with multiple attackers. BJJ say that all fights go to the floor. Is it really that weak when faced with many attackers? How do you cope with 2 or more attackers?
@slouttop Have you heard of WW2 combatives? you might find it interesting, look up Fairbairn & Sykes. As to your comment - it depends on the context, are you an expert or learner of BJJ? Does the attacker have a weapon? I think the military like BJJ because it allows you to fight close to the ground & not be a target but the view of most people is that BJJ (& it is true outside Brazil) has no strikes or stand up - that is not true. It is best though to learn boxing & Bjj & JJJ & mix training.
@infokemp I think it is best to learn Karate or Silat or Muay Thai and BJJ! Boxing and BJJ is also a solution! I know it has some stand up fighting but the main focus is on ground fighting! Jiujitsu is the best choice! Jiujitsu focusus a lot more on stand up fighting than Brazilian Jiujitsu (at least what it si thought in Japan compared to what BJJ is thought in Brazil)!
@zaco21 I do Japanese Jujitsu & boxing most but I do BJJ MMA when I can. I do agree with you that JJ is an excellent art - there is so much to it - but that is also its weakness - if you want to be able to fight in a real situation - for most folks the fewer techniques you have the more you can make combinations out of them, like in Boxing. I am increasingly interested in Catch wrestling it has some interesting techniques & molds well with boxing, its kindred system.
@Jarovortex BJJ was made for real fighting. not sport.it was made so that a smaller man could defeat a bigger man in a fight without rules. That is why Royce Gracie didn't like the addition of rules in the UFC. I dont think any fighting styles used in mma today includes biting and such in the lessons.
These guys are great analysts, but did they ever fight at the world class level? One thing to fight Anderson Silva, another to fight Kory. Awesome instructor though. I'm sure he would pull it off on me, but what about the true MMA monsters?
People who compete ask these questions. There's nothing moronic about the question. I can tap out non-competitors all day - it's a little different wrestling against other grapplers in competition and a little different fighting Muay Thai against other trained strikers. A lot of skills are hard to do against other competitors - moron

Check out his books Boxing Mastery, Savage Strikes.
I rate him as good as Renzo Gracie - now that would of been a Great fight!
Boxing & Jujitsu should be combined with Mauythia to make a great Martial art.
