i am really disappointed when i see the ukulele being played in a comedic role. it's not a toy. maybe i grew up different. where i am from in Hawaii, where the instrument was made (thanks to the help of the Portuguese) it was an instrument worthy of royalty. used to tell the story of our ancestors. used to teach about the ways of our lives. it makes me sad to see it in this way.
Thanks for letting us know how you feel - the last thing we wanna do is make you sad!
I suppose because the ukulele spread from Hawaii to other parts of the world a long time ago it has developed in many different ways independant of Hawaiian culture. We agree (and I'm sure The Hot Potatos would too) the ukulele is not a toy - and maybe because of that people now use it in all types of music.
I appreciate the response and the musicians are excellent no doubt. i guess as a native Hawaiian i feel very protective over the culture. if The Hot Potatos can bring smiles to people's faces then they are doing good for the world in general. let's all keep strumming and singing and making friends and teach aloha along the way. you guys are no ka oi! =)
very entertaining guys :-D

Love it! And I love that the uke can be fun as well as startlingly beautiful. We've already got legions of po-faced guitarists out there!
