Ah, music. Not trying to sound arrogant or whatnot, but this kind of pieces on youtube are a welcome change to modern "music" I have to listen to at work.
Well there is actually a difference between an E# and an F. I'm a double bassist and we have to be aware of that difference, especially if it's used as a leading tone. On the piano, they are the same exact note, but if I were to play them on the bass (not fretted) I would make a distinction between the two. It's minute, but it's there. It's all about the context it's used in really.
What I want to know is what he's playing on. It sounds like a Steinway. I can hear the crystal harmonic effect of the notes and I've only ever heard that on a Steinway.
@Chopin1974 Well, if you talk about this in a theory perspective, it's just an enharmonic. On the keyboard it's just on the same note that you play it but definitely, E# is sharper than an F. I absolutely agree.
@rochabeatlesfan: Actually, it's not. An E# is sharper than an F if played on a non keyboard instrument. The piano is well tempered meaning it's technically out of tune in order for it to be in tune. On a keyboard instrument only, the enharmonic equivalent of E# is F. Ask a violinist if they are the same note and they will say absolutely not. Do a little study.
I just posted my interpretation of Nocturne opus 9 ,No.2. I would appreciate your comments. Please click on my link 'alfonsopablo' next to this comment to listen.
@rochabeatlesfan E# and F are only the same note on keyboards and fretted instruments, which are, with modern equal temperament, all out of tune! D-E# is an augmented second. D-F is a minor third. Different intervals, played differently on a violin.
Beautiful...

Has anyone else noticed the way he plays the E and E sharp together at 0:18 and again at 1:05? Why does he do that?
RH98 5 months ago
@RH98 mmm, there's no such thing as E sharp unless u mean F
rochabeatlesfan 4 months ago
@rochabeatlesfan Um, yes there is. You need to study harmony.
JoEbYX 4 months ago
@JoEbYX well ur right that they call it E sharp instead of F in certain cases but its the same note so my bad for my pointless comment.

@JoEbYX an augmented second is the same thing as a minor third. in ALL western music there is only 12 notes. E# is F.
rochabeatlesfan 4 months ago
@RH98 And did you notice he also plays F-sharp instead of F in the right hand in the next bar?

Thanks! Rubinstien played many of these less well-known nocturnes beautifully, but not many people listen to them.
