  • So if civil unions and marriage had 100% equal rights, would that suffice? seperate but equal

  • Hey! Great video. I'm glad you're trying to clear up the misconception. Also, you might want to think about putting that link you mentioned in the side bar so people can just click it there. =)

  • Kenballer00, the case, gill vs opm demonstrates another reason why gay marriage should be legal. President Obama has repeatedly supported repealing the law that distinguishes between homosexual and heterosexual marriages. To be honest, I has never heard about that case, and I would like to thank you for bringing it to my attention. Clearly, not only do we need to legalize gay marriage nationwide, but we also must repeal that law

  • Obama supports civil unions but not gay marriage though so i would agree that DOMA needs to be repealed to make sure civil unions are equal to marriage all around without redefining marriage itself

  • Thanks for posting. The problem with "separate but equal" is that the separate status can be used as the basis for discrimination. It is in fact the PURPOSE of the separate status, ie to say that they're not equal, not the same.

This has been shown in history, and it's been documented time and again in civil union states. The New York Times did a great story on this called "After New Jerseys Civil Union Law, Problems Finding True Equality " which you can find via google.

    Thanks for posting!

  • thank you aryeh. ive been on the fence with this, and the truth is, i actually didnt know the difference between these two were

  • Glad I could help you clarify! It's really important that all people are given the freedom to marry so that they get all of these essential benefits!

  • the fact is whether its same sex civil unions or same sex marriage , same sex couples cannot have their relationship recognized by the federal government one way or another and therefore cannot receive any of the benefits that opposite sex couples enjoy in a legal marriage

  • Thats incorrect. There is no distinction between marriage or civil unions for one person or another. Marriage is marriage, whether the couple is Catholic, Jewish, or homosexual, so giving gay people the right to marry would give them EVERY single right that a heterosexual couple gets from their marriage.

  • you could not be more wrong. i encourage you to look up a case called Gill v. OPM, which will show you that married same sex couples are still treated differently to opposite sex married couples

  • if same sex couples are being denied all these federal benefits by not allowing them to get married, then why are gay activists in Masschusetts sueing the federal government to get those federal benefits that you speak of .

  • Same sex couples are denied these many benefits, but they are allowed to sue. I'm confused. What are you trying to say?

  • Man. So many people say that civil unions and marriage are the same deal and have no clue what they are talking about. Great video Aryeh.

  • awesome ari!!!!

finally someone who actually knows what they're talking about!!!

  • OMG Ari why are you wearing your yankee hat?
