i am surprised Pryor is not talked about more as a great fighter. He really displays a special style and really good skills i mean very few people have stopped arguello let alone twice.
EN LOS AMBITOS DE LA VIDA, NUNCA ES AGRADABLE PERDER, PERO DE LA FORMA QUE PERDIO ALEXIS ME SIENTO ORGULLOSO DE MI COMPATRIOTA NUNCA REHUYO EL COMBATE, ESO ES LO QUE TIENE QUE HACER UN RETADOR, A ALEXIS LE SOBRABAN HUEVOS...GRANDE ALEXIS ORGULLO NICA...

Great fight it was. What makes this win legitimate is that Pryor went on to beat Arguello again, in the same fashion, by putting him down on the canvas. That black bottle made no difference in this fight. Suck it up with and face reality nay sayers. Simply put Pryor was a stronger fighter.
I have to say: If Aaron Pryor wasn't cheating, then someone is crazy. The whole time all you heard the commentators say was to the effect of, "wow I can't believe that this guy is still standing after taking those kinds of punches." I have seen the fight before and I asked myself the same thing, because IT HURT ME JUST WATCHING PRYOR GET PUNCHED ON THE CHIN SO HARD. That is also part of it: Pryor was getting his head snapped back all night long. I just couldn't believe my eyes.
arguello what a guy ,went back to fight for his people ,jumping up to 4 weights back then was really hard and he came so close to being the first in history to do it ,yet although pryor cheated and denied arguello his moment ,he was still his friend and never appealled .a total gentleman, watch the mans dignity after the mancini fight , i have more respect for him than ali who bragged and belittled opponents ,watch him on parkinson being interviewed too,a racist ,the world worships the wrong guy
This is also an example of how a fighter who loses after such an epic effort isnt disgraced but revered by fans. Almost 30 years later and people still talk about it.
This fight is reason I cant give 12 round champs the same respect as 15 round champs from the past. Its a different animal. And Alexis may have won the fight after 12. Two great fighters and a thing of beauty to watch.
This fight is one of the main reasons why I cannot give 12 round champions the same respect as 15 round champs from the past. If this fight were 12, Arguello may have won the fight.
@torr59622 100% agree just think if Marciano fought Joe walcott today it would never have went to the 13th round and heavyweight boxings (and that awesome punch) flawless 0 loss record would never have been.....R.I.P the rock.
@shotgunshawzy Too true. 12 rounds was created in response to DuKo Kim death. But Jimmy Garcia and a few other have died within the 12 round limit, so it makes the change worthless. I hate hate hate hate the 12 round limit. All championship fights should be 15 rounds. No coasting when your up 6-1 after 7. You'd have to still fight!
Thats not true. Leonard was an almost career welterweight, and only moved to 160 at 30 to fight Hagler. They could have and should have fought. Timing was just poor for them, and for fight fans.
Aaron Pryor would have destroyed Ray Leonard, to bad Leonard did everything to aviod the fight. it would have been a great match. what a pussy Leonard was.
@nightcbs Your on crack.... Leonard took on Benitez, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, etc..... and BEAT THEM ALL ... Pryor's short stint at the top was just bad timing for a Leonard fight... this is 1982 when Leonard was either "retired" or just about to start a comeback after basically losing his eye in the war with Thomas Hearns a year earlier. A war in which that "pussy" got off the canvas and knocked Hearns damn near out of the ring in the 14th with one eye
cincinnati sick of this shit we dont get no respect this fight was the best fight ever cant no fight fuck with this cincinnati go hard in everything we do and soon people will see that shit yo boys clark ave that cincinnati r&bmusic
Alexis lost to the better man--twice! Pryor fought Arguello the same way he fought everyone: aggressively. Arguello is a great fighter and a class act who doesn't need bigoted fans making excuses for him that he never made for himself
@zulubro I'm a fan of both fighters. I'm not a "bigoted fan". Since when is stating facts making excuses? This is a fact: you don't mix water with water. That means there was SOMETHING in the bottle;in the water. How can you deny that? By observing the fight it is obvious that after being previously hurt and exhausted in the 13th round that Pryor coincidentally, and rather mysteriously, came out smoking in the 14th round as if it was the first round again. How can you deny that?
@TheChoice264 two things to consider 1) Pryor is known for his exceptional stamina. When have you ever seen him fatigued? 2) You've never seen highly motivated, well conditioned fighters get second and third winds? Come from behind and win by knockout? Snatch victory from the jaws of defeat? As far as bigotry is concerned, all you have to do is read enough comments to see many that have nothing to do with boxing
One other thing. Alexis was awesome on this night and it's hard for me to envision anyone other than Pryor beating him on this night. R.I.P. Explosive Thin Man I highly doubt he committed suicide.
I've watched a ton of fights and without a doubt this is the best fight I've ever seen. Not even The Sugar Man's commentary diminishes it. Someone is bound to go down eh Ray? Who would have beat the Hawk on this night? I say no one!!!
@chifuli1974. Nothing n the bottle was a mixture of lime juice and water. In hos book he admits to worse things so don't see why he'd lie about that. Pryor was still close to his prime Alexis best years the young greats beat the old greats

HAWK TIME!!! Aaron Pryor is my favorite fighter of all time, the most fun to watch, one of the most underrated too, dodged by the elite fighters of his era to remain a what-might-have-been in all-time standings. What a great, great fight, too.
@403766 harder training I doubted , psycologically arguello thought i cant beat him ,but believe me panama lewis will never admit to what he really put in that bottle!
Aaron Pryor was a great boxer and probably did not get the attention he deserved...especially when compared with the media attention given to Leanord, Hearns and Hagler in those years. I do remember Aaron as a quick tough fighter who had trouble signing with the big names. Still, knowing what Panama did with Resto/Collins and the audio from Pryor/Arguello 1, no body will convince me that the "bottle" was not juiced. PS this is just a disscussion...no reason for name calling!
@403766 I am aware of the 2nd fight results. I think in boxing, perhaps more than any other sport, it is extreemly difficult for many ellite fighters to be the same after big knockout losses. Too many times you see seemingly unbeatable fighters take a knockout loss and after for some inexplicable reason they never are the same! When you feel invincible doing the difficult might be possible but nothing is harder than what you think you can't do!
I agree with rspen461 These were both exceptionally talented boxers. But knowing Panama Lewis is in Aarons corner asking for "not that bottle, the one I mixed"...what can you believe. No one I ever saw walked through the type of Arguello rights that Aaron walked through on this night. I think there was something to the bottle! Still, Alexis was a natual featherweight & 4 divisions up from that here. With no juiced bottle is the outcome the same...I don't think so!
haters can talk about bottles all they want. Pryor's amateur and professional career -- which includes a worst ass whipping for Arguello in the rematch -- speaks for itself.
@zulubro why are they haters? because they dont want cheats in boxing. so if i dont think margarito should have loaded gloves does that make me hater? just because pryor was great doesn't deter from his cheating in this fight! fact!
I know that bottle had something, you don't mix water with water. Afterwards Luis Resto confessed that Panama use to put stimulants in their water, among the dirty tricks that Lewis employed for his fighters. Glad that scumbag is out of boxing, at least out of corners, cause he does still train fighters...
@chifuli1974 apparentley there was some kind of asthma meds mixed in with the water that opens up the tubes to the lungs, therefore giving pryor a little more wind in his sails. dont know how true that is but thats what i heard in an interview somewhere.
I remember watching the fight as it happened & immediately after Pryor was hanging over the ropes talking to reporters, they were asking questions & he was talking as if he were drunk, I know he was dead tired, and dumb to begin with, but the man could talk, but right then he was clearly in mind on something, I remember thinking it back then before it ever came out about the bottle, and in all his fights he went down many times, Arguello ripped him an bent his neck, and he did not go down.
And one has to wonder what tools Panama Lewis used from his bag of tricks for the two Arguello fights. Its strange that Pryor never fought anyone else worth a damn besides Arguello during his career.
@dahoss65 He was ducked man. You;ll never hear it from Sugar Ray Leonard, but it's rumored people in the media said Sugar didn't want the risk of losing at this time. In the end, I can't prove that. Just a rumor I think holds water because he did the same things with Hagler so he could fight him later rather than sooner. Drug addiction and eye injuries (partly from this fight) ended Pryor's career short. Had he stayed clean the Leonard fight would have probably happened later on.
I had never watched this fight before, and I intially believed the hype about the bottle but I don't know now, pryor just seems to mostly be beating him to the punch and controlling the action in close. All due respect to both men, much to learn from both of these great warriors
Lookit I'm a fan of arguello, but pryor beat him besides this w/ no bottle. Lookit it could've been "loaded" but then again it could be one of those things. Do u think dempsey loaded his gloves as jess willard claimed or did dempsey just have the best left hook in hw history (sleight, sleight edge over frazier. Slight!)
Trying to see if there is something "funny" about Pryor's gloves after reading Panama Lewis was his trainer. No doubt he was given the special "mixed bottle."
@archidexterous20 Probably wouldn't be a long fight. No disrespect to Pacquiao, but I think he'd get creamed by Pryor. Pryor would have too much firepower.
fights like this one is what really made me become a boxing fan the 80s is when you had a host of real boxers fights was just that the whole boxing game has changed fighters dont even train like they did back then now you have 2 quality fighters in mayweather and paqiou but thell never meet because floyd is worrying about staying undefeated
@MIZIKE69 what i was saying is that in each division you had atleast 10 top quality fighters now you rateeach division you couldnt name 5 quality boxers back then if you ask any body to name ten good boxers they could name 20 now you cant name 5
youtube you have a problem with your youtube page i was trying to watch the argeullo vs pryor fight the video started played for 5 seconds and stoped the circles rotated for about 3 minutes then the fight started again then stopped it does the same thing over and over again i wish and hope that someone from youtube see this comment and fix this annoying problem
if it wasnt for the mixed bottle that panama gave pryor at the later rounds, arguello could have won this one..if you dont know wat i mean?watch HBO's assault in the ring documentary..
didnt pryor turn up to be a big time coke addict??? how u pple gonna say he wasnt on something on dis fight??? those were brutal shots to the jaw/chin anybody would have been knocked the fuck out
when arguello hit him with that right in the 13th, the look on his face said"why won't you go down?' the commentatators were clearly for arguello, especially that bitch leonard. but the hawk ruled.
41:43...thats the punch that made people cynical about whether Pryor was on something. Kinda reminds me of the end of Scarface when Tony Montana was getting shot up by the hit squad and he was still standing and talking smack.
35:27 to the end of the round.....if Pryor wasn't on something then he has one of the greatest chins in boxing history. Those Arguello right hands should've ended the fight.

@akuonye No they don't. Pacquiao stays out of range and explodes, gets out of range again and repeats.
Pryor jumps in on top of you and stays on the inside, then boxes you. Pryor uses constant head movement and feinting while Pacquiao does none of that.

MIZIKE69 10 months ago
@MIZIKE69 what i was saying is that in each division you had atleast 10 top quality fighters now you rateeach division you couldnt name 5 quality boxers back then if you ask any body to name ten good boxers they could name 20 now you cant name 5

if it wasnt for the mixed bottle that panama gave pryor at the later rounds, arguello could have won this one..if you dont know wat i mean?watch HBO's assault in the ring documentary..

didnt pryor turn up to be a big time coke addict??? how u pple gonna say he wasnt on something on dis fight??? those were brutal shots to the jaw/chin anybody would have been knocked the fuck out
berman2008 11 months ago
when arguello hit him with that right in the 13th, the look on his face said"why won't you go down?' the commentatators were clearly for arguello, especially that bitch leonard. but the hawk ruled.

Those Arguello right hands should've ended the fight.

lol@ 32:30..."now Pryor showing that quasi-bolo punch that he says Sugar Ray Leonard stole from him"...Leonard's response "I stole from HIM????"
