As brilliant as Chomsky is, he is tone deaf re the poltical realities of governance in a democracy as wildly imperfect as ours [ emotional and ill informed]. Clearly it will take Obama 8 years to begin to undo past travesties and in the interim he will need a high percentage of popular support to push through legislation certain to be branded as radical. His natural pragmatism is precisely what is needed in such a polarized circumstance, however unappealing this is to utopians like Noam.

And we don't lack common sense, we just didn't have the right equipment to record Noam, he is very soft spoken. We are poor working people and we couldn't hire any "audio technicians" to do this. We arranged the interview last minute since Julia was returning to school in California, so we were given only 15 minutes. Noam was very nice to accept it, he was dealing with a lot of personal grief with the passing of his wife.
The interviewer wasn't good and took away from the enjoyment of hearing Chomsky speak.. Her constant mm-hmms were particularly annoying. She did that WAY too much.
What kills me about this is that the video was put together by college kids who should be able to use a simple audio filter during the edit to clean and boost his voice.
I would expect this kind of strain my ears audio quality from high school kids.
Marly61, all non-sociopaths think in moral terms. Corporations are 'persons' under the law -- the most powerful 'people' in America. But the law also says corporations have to act like sociopaths -- prioritizing self-interest above compassion and moral decency. IMO, most people acting within corporations are moral, but their actions are abstracted into an amoral fiction that masks them from personal responsibility and any sense of accountability for the actions of the corporation itself.
In the future, use a directional mic or a wireless clip-on mic for the interviewee (a bit more expensive, I know, but worth the one-time cost if you're going to do more of these). No criticism intended, but the sound is very bad.

My political philosophy has been shaped by Chomsky, but as of lately, I think he has been a chump.
Chomsky said before the election that there are differences between Democrats and Republicans, and suggested voting for Obama. Why couldn't Chomsky support Nader or McKinney the only candidates advocating REAL change.

He didn't. He just said some people in swing states might want to vote for Obama just to keep the even worse guy out. Certain media outlets (*cough* therealnews *cough*) jumped on that and tried to spin it, saying that Chomsky had supported Obama.
TheRealNewsNetwork was the one who gave that interview. They did spin it in the title (eventually they fixed it), but other than that Chomsky's words were left to stand on their own.
The RealNewsNetwork is not the only one that has made this mistake. During the debate between Ralph Nader and Chuck Baldwin, which aired on national television, C-Span, the moderator Chris Hedges (formerly of the NY Times) mistakingly said that Noam Chomsky said he was going to vote for Obama. Clearly it will take Obama 8 years to begin to undo past travesties and in the interim he will need a high percentage of popular support to push through legislation certain to be branded as radical. My political philosophy has been shaped by Chomsky, but as of lately, I think he has been a chump.
Chomsky said before the election that there are differences between Democrats and Republicans, and suggested voting for Obama. Why couldn't Chomsky support Nader or McKinney the only candidates advocating REAL change.
Keep on working for the war-mongering MIT, Chomsky. Your really living ethically.
Now, right NOW, there are no differences between rank and file Dems and Repubs.

There are small differences. He acknowledged that they are small. Minor, superficial ones, but they still make a difference. He advocated voting for Obama only in SWING states. That being said, I am with you in that I am disgusted by both parties and will continue to vote Green.

Green, Noam did say several times to vote for whoever you want in non-swing states. He said vote for Obama in swing states. Get back if you don't understand something I wrote.

Well those key 'swing states' were solidly in Obama's camp before the election as per most major polls so why vote the lessor of two evils when you had two incredible true progressive candidates, i.e. Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader.
And Marly, understand that I am not your enemy, I'm merely very upset that much of the 'progressive' community doesn't even support their own.
How do you like the appointments of your beloved Obama? And I guarantee, there will be little change under Bush Lite.

I was a harsh in calling Chomsky a chump, and I apologize. He is a great man who, as I said, contributed heavily to my understanding of politics particularly internationally. I will always be grateful for that.
I strongly oppose his opinion on the swing state idea and support Nader's idea to always vote your conscience. And MIT receiving DoD / Fed spending is a valid concern.

green, you realize that if you oppose noam on the swing state issue you are contradicting yourself. Because if Nader and McKinney had no chance of winning when you vote for one of them in a swing state your "real vote or effectual vote" was for Bush because Obama or Bush were the only two with a base large enough to win.

As long as people like yourself who vote Green believe that McKinney or Nader or any party outside of the two-party oligarchy does not have a chance to win, it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
We need to know that our candidates will win, and the only way to do that is if the progressive base is firm and unwavering in its solidarity for their candidates.
But, I honestly feel that economics will destroy this nation very soon, so politics doesn't matter anymore. The system is eating itself.

Clueless example, Noam knows that the contributions he gives and the profit he makes for anti-war organizations far exceeds the support MIT war mongers provide. Not only that but I prey that someday I get the opportunity to work in an organization like MIT with the same affect Noam is having - changing evil within.

However, why couldn't he have chose to not support and leave MIT which is the 50th largest defense contractor of the Department of Defense taking in $645 million . ( link on my channel description page at bottom )
Almost all MIT's budget comes directly from the federal government or multinational corporations. These are valid concerns that I am sure Chomsky and is aware of but chooses to work for the very oppressors he exposes.

Exactly; if people had done their research, they would have realized that an Obama win was a given, and this was one of their few times to vote their conscience and most blew it.
How many votes did McKinney and Nader get combined? ( 858,454 { McKinney - 159,656 votes / Nader - 698,798 }
Nader got 2,883,105 in 2000, point being the progressive vote presidentially lost 70% since 2000 and 2008 was the safest year ever to vote for who you believe is the BEST candidate.

Let's just say I'll take the 5th on that, and I'm not trying to get out of answering your question. I want as little to do with the federal government as possible.
You and everyone else should stop paying your federal taxes as well; it's the greatest form of protest. It is an illegal, unethical tax that this criminal government extolls on its citizenry.
I got out of the military as a conscientious objector, and I not only talk the talk, but live it.

green, wow, i am so proud of your actions as a conscientious objector. I did don't pay taxes to the US anymore, I left partly because of Iraq the terrible history of operations like it. Did you see "The Iraq War: Legal or Illegal? The Pinky Show" on Youtube? Also, I am sure you are aware of Lt. Ehren Watada.

It's because there's too much rhetoric involved with morality and too many people get caught up in it that it distracts them from the real significance. Plus it's much easier to talk the talk than walk the walk (too many politicians have perfected this art).

I'm sorry about the passing of Noam's wife. It doesn't show that much in this interview, and I'm sure it requires a great deal of mental strength to continue giving interviews, talks etc..

Knowing all of this was probably going to happen, why oh why did Chomsky still support Obama for President? BTW, the audio is terrible. A simple mic would have improved it greatly. But thanks anyway.

He didn't. He just said some people in swing states might want to vote for Obama just to keep the even worse guy out. Certain media outlets (*cough* therealnews *cough*) jumped on that and tried to spin it, saying that Chomsky had supported Obama.

TheRealNewsNetwork was the one who gave that interview. They did spin it in the title (eventually they fixed it), but other than that Chomsky's words were left to stand on their own.

The RealNewsNetwork is not the only one that has made this mistake. During the debate between Ralph Nader and Chuck Baldwin, which aired on national television, C-Span, the moderator Chris Hedges (formerly of the NY Times) mistakingly said that Noam Chomsky said he was going to vote for Obama. Noam's words do stand on their own, until people spin them into fabrications. Hedges should have known better. You can find the video on YouTube.

Noam always seems to have the clear view, he cuts through all the frogshit. He may not always have solutions but people seem to miss the fact he can objectively see all the problems.
