Haven't played the game myself, but I have seen all the endings. I know it's silly to make conclusions based on endings only, but it seems to me that the princess went on a journey because all she knew was the sugar sweetness of her kingdom. In doing so, she saw the darker side of the world, but rather than run back home and pretend it never happened, she slowly accepted and pursued it, corrupting her kingdom in the process. Finally, World 8 is the epiphany she reached.
