I love this freaking scene and this movie partially because I'm a submariner but mostly because this sub, the Dallas, is actually my boat, The USS Houston SSN-713!!!!! RIP Officer McCarthy.
One of few things in the movie that should be done in the book also. It's all cool though, we got in the film. Different concepts, yet both thrilling in their own rights.
See the spark? The XO is holding a grounding hook. The rotor blades of a helicopter produce static electricity, a 53E makes a spark big enough to kill you. In realty they would have lowered him to the deck rather than on the top of the sail,
Excellent scene. Love the music in this scene. Really conveys the suspense. I also thought the actors in the helicopter did well and the real pilot was awesome. The 1980's would've been a really scary point in time to have world war three in the GIUK gap and along Europe. To me, the technology and capabilities and resolve of both the Americans and the Soviets would make the fight devastating for both sides. My hat goes off to all who served in this time on both sides of the cold war.
RIP Great movies like this. Everything released these days is trash. Keep the Hangover franchise and bring well-written movies like this back.
