I watched it because of her/ it was a good show and I loved the fact that she sang the theme song. She is missed and like John Candy left us way too soon. R.I.P., Nell!!!
@coopwinters Sweet is probably best remembered for his role as cantankerous police chief and father Carl Kanisky, who was constantly at odds with housekeeper Nell Carter on the sitcom Gimme a Break!, a role he played from 1981 until his death. Sweet was diagnosed with cancer during the series' fourth season, but continued to work. Dolph Sweet died on May 8, 1985; his final appearance on Gimme a Break! aired 3 days later, coincidentally, on the day of his funeral.
Nell sportin that damn Mohawk. You guys are right. This show wouldn't make it today because Nell is a Black housekeeper, but this was a great show. I loved it and this is coming from an educated black woman. There was nothing wrong with this show then and now.
these stupid dum ass people puting videos here without any sound ,,whats wrong with you,,,,,people watching these videos that havnt seen 4 a long time cant watch the whole episodes because half the parts are soundless ..and the other part is with sound get it together you ass hole
Takes me back to a time when the world wasn't so liberal. So if you're a liberal, think about how much you loved the show Gimme a Break, and realize that being a liberal is going in the opposite direction of these days when Gimme A Break used to come on. LOL This will let you know that you need to come back to Conservative. LOL
wtf? I like this show as well too but im sure as hell not some convervative nut! As a kid growing I would come home from school and watch this show everyday....wth does this have to deal with conservative or liberal???
You know everything was different back then. Somethings on T.V. now are touchy topics and aren't really dealt with anymore. Somethings that wasn't talked about back then are now talked about on TV shows. It's flipped around...the politics of everyday living and what we see on T.V., that's what I meant by that. (Politics) That's all. LOL
well all the family shows from the 80s and 90s they touched such topics, but now the way television is nothing off limits you know., but they don't make shows like this along with Whos the boss, Cosby, Growing Pains, Mr. Belevedre and more.... Miss all those shows
Your right, everything now must be politically correct, Gimme a break would not be accepted in this day and age every though it's a good show, just because Nell is a black housekeeper, no body would dare to look for the deep and strong and loving relationship she has with for this family @Boogers4dinner
Try making a show like this and play it on you tube, and you may get a email from the NAACP. they would ask you to take it off !! and maybe ask question the actor who is black why is she playing this part. @applesauce2100
@Boogers4dinner - why bring politics into this??? It's a sitcom, for crying out loud. but since you did...
if you're alluding to the idea that Nell Harper was a black housekeeper and that blacks as servants represent "the good old days"...no, I think I'll stay liberal, thanks.
PS- Nell was their mom's friend- she promised her on her death bed she would care for her children. So, even on that level, your comment doesn't hold water...
And she wasn't even a comedian! Her first love was musical acting, and she won Tony a award for her Broadway performance. But BECAUSE she was so talented, she was able to perform beautifully in a comedic role! I really miss her.
RIP Nell Carter. God I loved this show and never missed it. So cool seeing this. This is my favorite version of the theme song. That girl could sing!!
of course she sings well.she used to do broadway musicals before she was on this show so she's really skilled.she was one of the greatest tv actress of all time.god rest her soul
i don't ever want to hear another fat person say they can't run cuz look at nell i mean she beast when it comes to runnin and runnin up those stairs. yo thats was my girl !!!
I always loved this theme song one of my favorites, I will always miss the dad and Nell forever, there's no show like this one:)

I read she had a stormy relationship, with the writers who wrote the scripts, because of creative differences.
