"I was in Scotland and I read in Melody Maker that Pete Townshend had said: 'We've just made the raunchiest, loudest, most ridiculous rock 'n' roll record you've ever heard.' I never actually found out what track it was that The Who had made, but that got me going; just hearing him talk about it. So I said to the guys, 'I think we should do a song like that; something really wild.' And I wrote Helter Skelter.
Saw an interview with Paul McCartney where he says this and the WHO song was "I Can See For Miles" Paul said it was a great song, but it wasn't the song that was described so he wrote Helter Skelter because he wanted THAT song that was described.
@oogalypoogalyman john lennon did write this...read his book "in his own right" carefully and john explains the fairground where he got the inspiration for this song.
U2 are the beatles of the 80's-sure people give out about him now but by the ttime he retires he will be revered like mccartney and lennon i assure you!
@0:54 is the most corniest fucking thing ever, too many people cover this track and too many people kill it. U2 have to be the most cheesiest band ever and it was inhumane how they treated such a heavy track. U2 arent noisy enough to cover Helter Skelter it would have suited them better to have covered something like Yesterday or Help or lucy in the sky
Thanks for posting this! Just wanted to let you know that I used this video recently in my Ringo Starr blog - link is on my channel if you're interested in seeing it!
I think it's funny how the Crue fans don't even realize it was a Beatles song first (They think it's U2 covering Crue...lol) and I think it's funny how the Beatles fans are so die hard that they refuse to accept U2. My step-mom is a die-hard Beatles fan, but she's also open minded enough to accept and enjoy the music of a band as great as U2. If they cover you or your "band", take it as a compliment. I love all three bands.
i swear Bono never even sounds like he's trying when he's singing and it still comes out amazing you never hear a strain on his voice the notes just come out so easily.

@CaptainCritical whats wrong with the lyrics.?
how are they wrong.?
MrArnold1972 11 months ago
@MrArnold1972 How are they wrong? Please, just listen.
CaptainCritical 11 months ago
@CaptainCritical yes ive listened and the lyrics seem the same as john lennons original unless theres something im missing.
you will have to point out the differences and errors with this version because i cant see them.
The lyrics are quite short with this song.i like the original also.
MrArnold1972 11 months ago
@MrArnold1972 The differences are only slight but, in my opinion, make a huge difference.
Mccartney: "You may be a lover but you aint no dancer"
Bono: "You aint no lover but you aint no dancer"
Also,
Mccartney: "When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide"......etc
Bono: " When YOU get to the bottom YOU go back to the top of the slide"......etc
I'm not splitting hairs here. It's just plain lazy to not sing the correct lyrics to a stone cold classic.
CaptainCritical 11 months ago
@CaptainCritical thanks for pointing those out.
I admit i never took much notice.
ive listened to the original hundreds of times and never noticed these.
u2 have shortened their version.the ending is not complete with this version.
im sure lennon would have liked this version anyhow.
I prefer the original white album song.
I consider bono a big headed bastard but thats just my opinion.
