Regarding the "let's cut congress" line--Bill's right of course, this doesn't amount to a hill of beans, and it's proof that the Republicans cannot make politically viable cuts that would make an actual dent. The CDC actually estimates that home invasions thwarted by gun owners is around 500,000 per year. John Lott and Gary Kleck find that around 2 million defensive gun uses by armed citizens occur every year. 250 years ago we fought against tyranny and won our independence. Normally I like Bill Maher, but he is so dead wrong on this. There is no reason a law abiding tax paying citizen shouldn't own any damn firearm he or she wants to own; If he had his way, only criminals would have guns. Not to mention, incidents like Arizona are not the fault of gun owners-all it would take is a guy with a molotov cocktail or other explosive device, and a good pitching arm. I don't own a gun myself, because I just don't feel the need, but I don't see why someone else shouldn't.
It's quite simple; if someone shows clear signs of mental illness like a lot of right-wingers do, they should not be allowed to carry something potentially deadly. Owning a gun may be a right but when the second ammendment was written, all they had were muskets and rifles. Now we have uzies, assault rifles, and other more deadly firearms. Many of which shouldn't be in the hands of civilians at all. A simple pistol or shotgun is enough for the american public.

Banning firearms in the US would not effectively eliminate it, it would just be possessed by the criminals. I think history has proven that banning anything in the US is ineffective. Unless the whole system is fixed, I don't think the US should try to ban anything.

Regarding the "let's cut congress" line--Bill's right of course, this doesn't amount to a hill of beans, and it's proof that the Republicans cannot make politically viable cuts that would make an actual dent. The CDC actually estimates that home invasions thwarted by gun owners is around 500,000 per year. My point is that a gun ban only means the law abiding that have no intention of breaking the law can not get guns for self defense. The criminals can still get guns and criminals will always be able to get them no matter what kind of laws.

@ender003 I just said the culture in Japan is very different than ours. They have something like 2% unemployment and they are all very docile and non confrontational. Switzerland has more guns and more gun rights than the US and their crime is so low that statistics aren't even kept. So do you understand now that its the people and not the guns? That would be like calling for rock and stick control in caveman days.

Normally I like Bill Maher, but he is so dead wrong on this. There is no reason a law abiding tax paying citizen shouldn't own any damn firearm he or she wants to own; If he had his way, only criminals would have guns. Not to mention, incidents like Arizona are not the fault of gun owners-all it would take is a guy with a molotov cocktail or other explosive device, and a good pitching arm. I don't own a gun myself, because I just don't feel the need, but I don't see why someone else shouldn't.

It's quite simple; if someone shows clear signs of mental illness like a lot of right-wingers do, they should not be allowed to carry something potentially deadly. Owning a gun may be a right but when the second ammendment was written, all they had were muskets and rifles. Now we have uzies, assault rifles, and other more deadly firearms. Many of which shouldn't be in the hands of civilians at all. A simple pistol or shotgun is enough for the american public.

@DevSodDribble In many other countries, including China, banning firearms effectively eliminates it from the population with the exception of the authorities. But I agree with you. Banning firearms in the US would not effectively eliminate it, it would just be possessed by the criminals. I think history has proven that banning anything in the US is ineffective. Unless the whole system is fixed, I don't think the US should try to ban anything.
