Kudos for giving original credit. Even when asked about torrents, you direct value to original author(s). That's a sure sign of advanced civilization. Thanks again.
@chimpiki Found the torrents! Thanks anyway, this is truly a masterpiece and worth buying it. By the way I rather the film version of this song than the album one, I think it is more powerful
Let me break this down. There are aspects of Neely's performance that are remarkable (his high notes specifically), but listen to Ian Gillan's LOW parts! There is hardly a break in timbre from top to bottom; when Neeley goes low, he has to break into his chest, and it sounds rough. Gillan's low notes are just as gentle and caressing as his middle and high notes. Listen to Gillan's Poor Jerusalem; it will show you more of what I mean.
What an amazing piece, from an amazing play and album, with amazing actors and singers, written by a stunning lyricist and an equally stunning composer.
For that song you need to have rock mind but not pop sound. There is no comparasing between rock star hart & Bilan pop talanted singer with girly voice.

This is very controlled, the screams are nowhere near Neeley intensity. I suppose you could call it "neater" than Neeley's rendition, but I think Teddy does this better. Like..3:19. What the hell is that?
@TheHeathenAngel ....No he doesn't. He bulldozes through every phrase with vibrato you could driva a truck through. Gillan is this one and only Jesus. Period
@BigDeanoSyd Pff, as if! Gillan never even acted it out physically, and his interpretation has more nuance and phrasing than anything Neeley does. The same goes for Murray Head, the one and only Judas
@flicfan416 What rubbish there isn't a tenth of the raw emotion and vocal interpretation that Neeley brings to this song. Neeley shades the song with so much emotional detail in his voice and he is able to tear up the high parts with more power than Gillan....I think the film producers made a wise decision by going with Neeley, he is a greater interpreter and actor
@TheHeathenAngel No he doesn't. When the original recording was made the artists were allowed to interpret the songs in their own way - hence Gillan's trademark screams, which he had already applied to Deep Purple. Neely basically copies Gillan's individual style.
@FloydyTube According to a previous post from another user, part of this song "Appears on the Nobody's Perfect Live Album from 1990. I belive during Strange Kind of Woman." He never performed the role of Jesus live on stage, but he has done bits from the musical during other concerts. I haven't personally been successful at finding any of them online.
@FloydyTube According to Gillan, he was offered the role in the film but he was fully committed to Deep Purple's touring schedule at the time and had to decline. Ironically, he left Deep Purple just a few months later.
This is my opinion but I think the reason everyone loves this reason the best is because of it's polished quality, and the fact that it's fucking Ian Gillan. Not that the original version isn't amazing, but the feel of his voice isn't what Jesus was feeling during his prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was in distress and agony asking his father to reconsider his death. IG sounds too powerful in the beginning and not scared. Neeleyon the other hand had a tone of mercy and fear. My two cents
This is without a doubt the best performance. The nuances, the phrasing, the range, seriously if you get a chance listen to he entire original recording, Gillan and Head absolutely tear it up.
No one in history had ever sung like this before - a high tenor range rock ('bluesy') voice and an orchestra had never properly met before. Before then it had always been trained, pompous sounding operatic voices singing over dramatic orchestral pieces. Oddly enough, its now gone back to that to some extent - Lloyd Webber's choice of singer has at any rate.
My significant other and I fight over this al the time...I bought and listened to the original 1970 album...he saw the movie....Ian is by far the best singer for this role ever...the depth and sincerity in singing is phenominal....
Does anyone know where i can get a copy of the full album the ian gillan jesus christ superstar????? help!!!! been trying to track it down for years.........
If you want to actually buy the cd, it's the one with the yellow circle with red edges on a dark purple background; on Island Records - it's widely available.
Just a remark. When Benny Andersson, Björn Ulveus and Tim Rice wrote Chess ( Andersson & Ulveus = ABBA if you didn´t know). they wrote the biggest part the russian chessplayer just for Tommyy Körberg, they didn´t want any other singer.
Actually they only wanted swedish singers bur they realized that it could be a problem selling the project. JCS wasn´t written for Gillan altough it seems so.
What I don´t understand is the lack of history in many comments.
Ian Gillan was choosen to sing the role on the record after Lloyd Wbber and Rice had heard his performance on the Concert at Royal Albert Hall ´69.
Gillan got the notes and nailed all songs in 4 hours.
Neely and others how good they now might been, had to rehearse the role for months and months and still it´s a variation of Gillans excellent performance on the album they all others do. Please don´t compare them!
When Deep Purple did the concerto in Royal Albert Hall ´69, Rive and Lloyd Webber were there and after Gillan had sung Child In Time that night they decided who they wanted to sing Jesus part on the record.
i love Ted Neely's version the best, but thats not saying that Ian has amazing ability (Plus, with the technique that he uses he probably doesn't need to rest his voice right after the song) I just wish that I could feel what everyone feels when he sings this, I just...don't. Neely's version of this song is so powerful and Ian's just lacks for me.
@larteonceagain Hey now, I never said that Neely better than Gillian, all I was saying was that the emotional impact of Neely's is much more impacting for me. Gillian's performance is beautiful, very well done, and awesome to listen to, but I just don't feel his passion. Once again, I never said that Neely was better than Gillian, I just do not feel his passion as much as Neely's.
I listened to Jesus Christ Superstar all through my adolescent years. It is funny about all the outdated controversy back then, as the story of Jesus told through means by which an entire generation could relate should have been all positive. Many people, including myself would not have known of the story of Christ's last days without this work. Ian Gillan, and this song, is the most inspiring-tear wrenching version ever made. What a voice!
@FlaccidSWE And sadly enough, he can't do it any more. Word is that when he had his tenure with Black Sabbath he wrecked his voice. He still sings, but does't have anywhere near the range and clarity he used to have. Too bad, he had a fantastic voice.
Ted Neeley or Ian Gillain...it doesn't matter...if this (more human) Jesus Christ were what the christian church would teach about, they'd have a more significant following...That said...that falcetto...guy or girl...orgasmic <3
On the live album Come Hell or High Water, Ian also sings a bit of JCS at the end of "Perfect Strangers" - the line "I don't want to taste your poison"
@TurtleFL which actually is interesting to me because "Perfect Strangers" could actually also be about Jesus Christ or God ... the "silent well of sorrow" being Sheol where Christ descended to when he was dead, symbolizing the propitiatory...
I totally agree. He was the best. I don't like Ted Neely's voice that much. It's higher and rather screechy to me. Ian has a great range and rock scream - one that doesn't sound like a cat being run over by a car.
I was only 15 when I first saw Jesus Christ Superstar back in 1970. I have to admit this was my favorite song out of this legendary film. It just happened to be on this past Easter Sunday & many memories came to mind. What I remember is that the 45 "I don't know how to Love Him" was always playing on the radio & being on the top of the charts. but this song beat that in my book!
this is the origanal and anybody else has to use this as a reference point to redo it.thats why its the best. neely couldnt have done his version without this one.and personally I like gillans voice a lot better.neely screeches IMHO.
Ian Gillians version is much more dynamic than Ted Neelys. In fact Gillians version blows away Neelys! There is no comparison! Plain and Simply no comparison!
As mush as I love, as in LOVE, the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar and its OST (to the point that I absolutely abhor ANY succeeding version of JCS), the 1968 recording (and Ian Gillian) is really, really good. I'm not taking anything out of Ted Neeley, though. Ian may have sung it better, but Ted brought it to the stage and the screen.
I still regret letting my mom give away my dad's copy of the 1968 JCS soundtrack, just because I didn't have a phonograph. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I saw Ted Neely star in the original Broadway production before I ever heard and bought the album. While all the subsequent film productions and recordings were decent to very good none of them can touch the 1970 album and I mean in every facet. Of course Neely can sing however he doesn't have the depth, tone or articulation of Gillan so magnificently presented on this song in particular. Instrumentally this album has a sparseness that captures the rock music spirit of the time that is unequaled
@thebuzzman13 Yeah, I felt like Neeley didn't put any character into his portrayal, right down to the fact that his expression never changes in the movie. Whereas the greatest strength of Gillan's performance was the real human quality he gave to the character.
ALW wrote the entire play\rock opera based on the voice of Ian Gillan with his vocal range in mind. Neely was a fill in for the movie due to the fact that Gillan couldn't commit to filming with the touring schedule DP had at the time. Not taking away anything from TN, he's an incredible artist, but, when JCS is invoked, he's nothing more than a fill-in.
Sorry, but I lave Gillan. The score was written before they ever heard Gillan, but they knew the find the perfect guy to sing it when they heard Gillan sing Child In Time at the Concert 1969, at Royal Albert Hall.
Sorry, but I love Gillan. The score was written before they ever heard Gillan, but they knew the find the perfect guy to sing it when they heard Gillan sing Child In Time at the Concert 1969, at Royal Albert Hall.
I grew up with both the movie and this entirely better soundtrack. I know each and every song from both versions! Both are great, but this song, done by Gillan is so much much better, yet for movie effects and physical punctuation, Ted Neely's is great too. Like I said, I go both ways. I saw the play as well :-)
@MichiganLake2008 Unfortunately no. Gillan was the original Jesus in the sense that he recorded the demo track (heard here), but never originated or performed the role on stage. There is a report that part of the "Jesus Christ Superstar" main theme was played at a Deep Purple concert at some point in time, but no recording of it exists.
@chimpiki totally true!!! I have this version in my old recordscollection. I bought it in Boston 38 years ago!!! I also attended a live stage presentation and tell you this: Neely did it FANTASTICALLY!!! I tend to agree that this Gillan version set the path to all future performers to follow, including Neeley eventhough Neeley's version is, in my opinion, simply atonishing!!!!!
@TheKlov40 Sorry but I disagree! When I was there witnessing live stage performance by Neeley I though and felt as I still do now, 38 years later, that his interpretation was simply atonishing!! Did you ever attend a live presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar performed by Neeley? If your answer is yes, then I will accept yr comments and will respect them as your opinion. If your answer is no, then I will rest my case!!
@chimpiki There is a recording of it on a cheapo compilation I bought for like £1.99p, it also has them doing a little version of Rollercoaster by Buddy Holly.....unfortunately I lent the cd to my friend about 15 years ago and can not remember the tittle of it nor have I seen the friend in recent years.

@larteonceagain but Neeley one, which is not the original version, just a cover and Gillan sang it originally and it was far better than this and gave Neely the way how Jesus vocals should have been expressed ...Gillan's vocals experssion, tone and technique were far superior...
@larteonceagain In an interview Gillan said that "the choruses were already written, but Andrew told me to improvise in the verses". That's why the melodies all fit his voice so well, I guess. If what you say about the time he spent on this is true then it makes his performance even more remarkable!
I see Ian's version as a more angry Jesus. He knows what's coming very soon and has been snapping on a variety of people (Judas, the merchants, the blind, crippled & poor) leading up to this point and now is snapping on God. He doesn't want to die.

I love Ian,But I prefer Neeleys version. Ian is amazing in this..But it feels like it's lacking the necessary pain and anger, anguish, that you can hear VERY clearly with Neeleys version.I know that ians is the orig,But Jesus is supposed to be suffering emotionally,Ian doesnt sound like hes suffering..he just sounds like a Rock singer posing as Jesus..Neeley takes on the role perfectly w/ his vocals..You can FEEL neeleys pain.Thats why I prefer his.Ian isn't theatrical exactly though, makes sense
@MrHanzle He should do after nearly 40 years of singing this...Gillan sang this only once and vocally it blows Ted away...anybody that sings knows that.
I've founded many versions of Ghetsemane on YT, and listen every one, included the theatrical and amazing Balsamo , Rauch (a promiss), this one, maybe the better understood because Guillan constructed the character, but, beeing an old fan of DP, I've to say Neeley's one is the better version. Exactly what I understand for an "Opera Rock aria".
Neely's good, but Gillan is far more powerful and full.

I would really, really would have loved TN take a try on Child In Time, when was at his best.
But I´m afraid he would´t do it, ´Couse who´s gonna outsing Gillan on that piece? The ablum track just was one attempt.
Then Gillan sang it hundreds of times during 69-73, before he smoke and drank his voice into a much worser condition than he had to
Neely´s version is built of Gillans performance. Gillan saw the notes was 4 hour in the studio and nailed it.
Neely would never done it.

What a voice!

you are soooo right.
CristiaanC 8 months ago

TurtleFL 9 months ago

Ian Gillan ROCKS!!!!!
CarEdy23 9 months ago 3
I saw Ted Neely star in the original Broadway production before I ever heard and bought the album. While all the subsequent film productions and recordings were decent to very good none of them can touch the 1970 album and I mean in every facet. Of course Neely can sing however he doesn't have the depth, tone or articulation of Gillan so magnificently presented on this song in particular. Instrumentally this album has a sparseness that captures the rock music spirit of the time that is unequaled
thebuzzman13 9 months ago 15
@thebuzzman13 Yeah, I felt like Neeley didn't put any character into his portrayal, right down to the fact that his expression never changes in the movie. Whereas the greatest strength of Gillan's performance was the real human quality he gave to the character.
SnakeRambo 6 months ago 2
The greatest. Ian screams like god.
cliftmon 9 months ago 4

I grew up with both the movie and this entirely better soundtrack. I know each and every song from both versions! Both are great, but this song, done by Gillan is so much much better, yet for movie effects and physical punctuation, Ted Neely's is great too. Like I said, I go both ways. I saw the play as well :-)
lisamiller22 9 months ago
lovely. is there a video of him singing this anywhere?
MichiganLake2008 9 months ago 4
@MichiganLake2008 Unfortunately no. Gillan was the original Jesus in the sense that he recorded the demo track (heard here), but never originated or performed the role on stage. There is a report that part of the "Jesus Christ Superstar" main theme was played at a Deep Purple concert at some point in time, but no recording of it exists.
chimpiki 9 months ago
@chimpiki totally true!!! I have this version in my old recordscollection. I bought it in Boston 38 years ago!!! I also attended a live stage presentation and tell you this: Neely did it FANTASTICALLY!!! I tend to agree that this Gillan version set the path to all future performers to follow, including Neeley eventhough Neeley's version is, in my opinion, simply atonishing!!!!!
mfrances0503 9 months ago
@mfrances0503 Not astonishing! His version is more spoken than sung!
TheKlov40 9 months ago
@TheKlov40 Sorry but I disagree! When I was there witnessing live stage performance by Neeley I though and felt as I still do now, 38 years later, that his interpretation was simply atonishing!! Did you ever attend a live presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar performed by Neeley? If your answer is yes, then I will accept yr comments and will respect them as your opinion. If your answer is no, then I will rest my case!!

how could a role sung by Ian Gillan, no scratch that, how could anything in this earth inspired Jesus when He created it in the first place?
larasssss 9 months ago
Ian Gillan wrote a good portion of the music for JCSS and was asked to play the role of Jesus for the film but he turned it down due to touring so...
404correction 9 months ago
@404correction
Correction: Gillan didn´t write one single note or word for JCSS.
larteonceagain 8 months ago
@larteonceagain but Neeley one, which is not the original version, just a cover and Gillan sang it originally and it was far better than this and gave Neely the way how Jesus vocals should have been expressed ...Gillan's vocals experssion, tone and technique were far superior...

Hi!
You are the second responding that I´m some way critised Gillan!
I´m not I´m a huge Gillan fan and thibk he sing the ass of Neely.
And as you say Gillan showed how it should be sung giving all other JC a clear direction how it shoud be sung.
And they way Gillan did it in only 4 hours from seeing the notes for the first to make the classic JC on the record is just amazing.
larteonceagain 8 months ago
