Well, I think any bass guitarist that can Mock Benson and keep up, deserves to show it off. As for the guy doing Eric Gale's part, I think he did it justice. Eric had his own style, and was very identifiable. Think I read Eric passed in '94. Don't think the guitarist was trying to do a mock E.G.s original set, because the way one plays during recording is quite different than that of a live session. Besides, sitting next to Bob, (LIVE) would naturally make you want to sauce it up.
