I love it.! I'm glad to see it's not only guitar players ripping each other apart! i have just discovered Mindi, ( from her performance on Idol ) i think she is doing a great job on the music i have heard here on youtube. i do not play sax so all of the technical stuff about chocking notes, palm notes or whatever, it sounds great to me!
holy cow, this version of the joint (mda telethon/LV) is totally and sickly off the freakin chain. mindi and the band caught an epic groove during this jam and just turned the place out. I didn't know that mindi was such a strong R&B player, but I always suspected it. a five star rating. ...lekool
Ask God that one day we have the Brazilian musicians appreciation for people of Brazil, in the same way that developed countries give their instruments....
OK... enough. I love what Mindi does, and love what Candy does.
This was from the Jerry Lewis telethon. It was for a great cause, and Mindi did a mainstream song of hers that would work. for the huge audience. We all know that she was Berklee trained.
This showed that you can have fun and put on a good show without trying to impress a bunch of music majors... or Prince fans.
You are correct. Mindy is no Candy nor is she trying to be. Different artist with different styles both are great at what they do. Thanks for having a good ear though.
Mindi is totally awesome... one of the greatest jazz artists around. To be accepted in the Julliard School of music , an artist HAS to be an amazing music artist ...
I agree Mick. I saw her live three times in one year. She and the band put such an upbeat and energetic show, I had to go back again. Can ya believe people don't know about music like this? Fantastic musician.
Mindi is super. Not only does she have the talent but she is very nice, Saw her about 2 yrs ago...fantastic show. Can't wait to see her again....and yes my wife does know,,,I am in love...
Not only is she fantastic, she is very approachable and warm! I had the honor to say hello to her, my 5 year old son sang the "KSSJ" radio jingle to her. Yeah, he's a player already :-) Go Mindi, love your style-- and grace...
Park, I dont see how u could possibly compare Mindi Abair to Britney Spears. Image helps, yes, but Mindi, (unlike B), is actually talented. Also, further proving that its not all about image, I would hold the same respect as i do for Mindi's music as i would a male artist.
Did anyone notice her choke on a note around 2:30 into it? I've seen her live here in TAmpa/St. Pete/Clearwater, FL., where she's from. She may be 'hot' but Candy Dulfer is much more attractive, classy, and a much better player. However, just because you're hot, have connections, doesn't mean you can get to this level, commercially, without being a decent player......but she's really losing her tone in her palm key notes....sad.
For what it is worth, this was at aprox. 2 AM and for a national TV audience that had millions watching even at that hour. Unlike a concert, there is no "getting the flow going." In addition, she went on about 30 minutes before originally scheduled (meaning she possibly didn't have planned warm-up time).
@mitchasics I've noticed Mindi choke on a lot of notes. She is no Jessy J or Candy Dulfer. They are truly talented. I don't know why people compare her to Eric Darius or other great sax players. Mindi is NOT a good sax player. Her pitch is off. Mindi is ruining the smooth jazz genre.
@mitchasics thats just the way she articulated it. if you listen to all of the other staccato high tones, its pretty much a super short version of them.
hey look!!!! our jazz records sale is falling because people aren't interest in music anymore and they pay attention to image way more so we have to come up with a new plan ummmm how about a hot blonde jazz version of britney??? That might just do the job yea!!!!
Seeing the success of Mindi, Candy, and Jessy J is a nice shot in the arm for contemporary jazz. Yes... the genre doesn't exactly allow them to show their chops. But, all are life-long musicians (as oppossed to pop star who can't even sing on key without audio FX). Plus, all three of the ladies have stepped outside of the "elevator music" sound and making CD's worth repeated listens. Their looks are a (welcome) bonus in my book.
Ted I do agree with you somewhat, but then again, almost every 'smooth jazz' alto player sounds the same. Only a few have a distinct sound, like Sanborn. Its sad if instrumental (sax, smooth jazz) stuff will eventually go that way. I'm not saying she's bad, but 2 am, or 5 am, if you're in it, your're in it. For me, palm keys don't require warming up, she's flat out not tightening her embouchure on those notes, and the tone just goes away. I won't comment on 'elevator' because I love KG
The performer and the performance are both spicy! The song doesn't sound terribly challenging, but it's okay. It gets better at about 2:00. She has really good stage presence, moving around and communicating with the other on-stage musicians.
Hey PL, azz Artists are NOT noted for flamboyant theatrics. Playing 1 song "4321-camera live" on a TV set is quite itimidating: stay within physical parms & get into the groove quickly. Your comment does reinforce the saying audiences "see 50% of what they hear.".& for the record Coltrane hardly moved at all except for his hands. Does this make any sense? Everyone's act can be improved but seldom satisfies everyone's AV tastes.Perhaps she needs to tour with Prinze. hehheh
I think she has good sound and is obviously a performer. But I think the true test lies in her improvisation. I want to see her take some of this music and go off on it. In this piece she does some but lets really get to it and hear something more than a couple bars.
I've seen Mindi perform, and I've met her. She's a class act and it wouldn't matter if she was an 8 foot tall ape. She's a good player and a great entertainer - so what if she's also attractive?
I disagee that musically she isn't saying anything. I think she's skillfully expressing and phrasing the groove of the music and communicating what its groove conveys. You can hear the music walking, bobbin', steppin' back all in the confines of an imaginary groovin' jazz joint expressed in her playing.
Can some idiot like me have a conversation with the likes of a brillrant person like yourself. Even I can't spell that well?

okay, because she is busy being "blonde" and "pretty" she isn't showing enough soul and emotion for the music she plays...
right guys?
She should dye her hair a deep red, wear a rasberry beret and a black leotard and black tights with some cool boots...
Blow a little harder and deeper on her sax and she will fit the bill
