The fact that Stevie busted out during the 80's when techno, synth bullshit was dominating the masses of ass's, shows how great he was as an artist, great tunes and playing...if he was out earlier he would have burned down most of the great guitarist's houses to the ground, the greatest blues/rock guitar player that has yet to grace the earth, period.
Can I just say one thing about the Jimmy vs Stevie thing? If you put them together to play both in there prime Stevie would have to slow it down for Jimmy. Also about Jimmy was pretty sloppy not real polished. Its like when a father teaches his kid something and then the kid grows past him and becomes better... it is just the way it is.
it is not about who is better. when it comes to really, and i mean truly good music, there is no space for arguing or discussion about skill. there is only sound.
as for Jimmi Vaughan: he was the one who nurtured and nourished Stevie, he is the older brother that inspired and lead the way for Stevie. I am sure that if Stevie Ray were still alive, he would tell you the same: that respect need not come from musical skill, but from charisma and person, which are not always based purely on skill.
@sinprelic I personally think that Stevie Ray was a better guitarist then Jimmie by leaps and bounds. However, Stevie always credited Jimmie as being such a great player that greately influenced him. Stevie seemed to be such a humble kind of guy. Jimmie definately has his place and if not for him, we may never have heard Stevie.
@Funkensteinlives i also think so, but there is no use saying that. music is not only skill but it is also inspiration and creativity, and stevie ray took a huge chunk of his passion from jimmie. stevie could play better, but that doesnt make jimmie any less worth, or vice versa. go go vaughans!
@sinprelic ...oh yeah I agree 100%..I didn't mean to hate on Jimmie...he had his own style and is great in his own right..what i was gettin' at, is that even though Stevie was a technically better guitarist, he was initially influenced by Jimmie..and if not for Jimmie, Stevie may have never picked up a guitar. IMO, we have Jimmie Vaughan to thank for the guitar wonder that was Stevie Ray. Sorry if I sounded like I was puttin Jimmie down...I ddn't mean that at all.
@Funkensteinlives i dont think one is better than the other. jimmie will make love to ya and stevie will hold ya down. two dffernt people, brothers. stevie may have made little wing his but that dont make him any better than hendrix. check out snooks eaglin.
Stevie and Jimmy have diffferent styles. The only thing that matters is who you like. The great thing about playing music is that there are no set rules.
very true mate, love the way you put that paragraph together. i 100% agree with you That Jimmy was a bit sloppy, eventhough he was a great guitarist who basically started that stye of blues off with no real influences, i just think srv is the king of guitar playing, never have i really heard him make that many mistakes.
Dig on the Live at Carnigie Hall Album then - SRV and Jimmie playing like fire, both man. And it is Jimmies band that makes it sound great too. They are both amazing and are integral parts of music hostory. We are lucky to have two! even though you may not be able to appreciate one as easil as the other. Jimmie is a master - he grows on you. At least thanks the man for leaving his guitars lying around, if you get me ;) Cuidese y Ciao de Chile
Remember stevie!!Don´t forget him! He must have been something special that man.Gone thrue hell and back again and still have the joy and happines to the music. My kids now who he was and they are 2 and 5 years old. Its important to me to pass the memory of Stevie furter on to new generations. Maybe just maybe they pick it up and love the music. When my kids hear a guitar on radio they ask if that was Stevie. When i hear that a big smile comes up on my face and i feel a little bit happy!!
jimi and svr are both fucking great...they both tear it up, u cant prove whose better because they both are amazing at this song, so just accept the amazing sound your ears are priveledgees to hear because its pure perfection from two people you will never get to see.
ok... let me see.. i could give 100 arguments on why you are wrong (because you are talking about hendrix). but because i dont have the time and the will to, i'll give you just one: SHUT UP!!!!!
While people in this life are bitching and arguing over this song, Jimi and Stevie are off in the after-life playing heavenly duets together.. Rest in Peace Gentlemen

Not only a great tribute to Stevie Ray, but to all the great bluesmen who came before - Bill Broonzy, BB King, Muddy Waters, etc. Clapton wishes he could play the blues like this white boy. RIP SRV
This SRV version is just amazing. Listen to all the different tones

You kids!
It wasn't that he could play X or Y.
You all focus on that and that's why you're all hung up on A is better that Z etc. bullshit.
Before Jimi NO ONE made these sounds. NO ONE!
Before Jimi these sounds DIDN'T EXIST!
Sure X, or Y or Z can play this sound better, faster, whateverer, but all they're doing is replaying a sound INVENTED by Jimi.
Sure there have been better light bulbs made since Edison's, but who is the genius? The improver? Or the MAN himself!
