Thank you, thruthealcove! I first bought Mr Fix It Man in '79, only 'cos a friend of mine was knicknamed Mr Fix It, but I was floored by the lead singer's voice. Now you tell me she was none other than Merri Clayton, who sang the wiiild and wicked 'Rape, Murder' parts on the Rolling Stones track Gimme Shelter! Isn't she also the sister of Sam Clayton from Little Feat, I heard? Thanks for your info and your research; invaluable... from a UK soul fan who never stops learning :0)
@dustybottoms10 No, Vermettya Royster does the lead vocal on "Mr. Fix-It Man", not Merry Clayton. And yes, Sam is Merry's brother. So glad you enjoyed this video!
You never cease to amaze me alcove!! I love you!! ha, haaaaa...I didn't think anyone remembered the "Sister's Love"!!! They were some of the baddest singin' sistah souljah's around! Weren't they fierce on Soul train?!!!!!!!! Merry Clayton did the original Shoop shoop song too, but Betty Everett did the heck out of it too! You're my true family...
OMG YES, their appearance on Soul Train was CRAZY, I don't think they were ready for them!!! LOL Singers like them always get swept under the rug, which is cool by me cuz I always go for the underdogs. I love Merry too, she got some pipes on her!!! LOL I'm so glad you saw this vid, it's one of my faves, thanks so much, good to hear from you too!!!
I love them too. The first song I heard was Mr. Fix-it, on a Tamla Motown compilation early 70's. I bought the comp that period, and have remembered them since. So I have the cd you mentions, and I do recommend the cd too!
So good to know other fans out there!!! I wish they were bigger in terms of fame & noteriety, but it's okay, they're like our little musical secret!!! LOL
They were just the BEST!!! And yes, I heard about that, but when I made this video, that was the only thing out by them, which was REALL disappointing, but better than nothing. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Motown/Universal is behing this new one & that they do it right, they deserve better!!!
Great video. You mentioned H.B Barnum, who was an arranger at Motown. Since 1 of the members was his secretary, it only made sense that they came 2 Motown. Another thing, the 1st song you played 'the harder u love', was also done by the Supremes & the 4 Tops. Sister Love's version is much better! Plus, my fav by them is their remake of 'Gimme Your Love' . These women were fierce. It's a shame they didn't get the promotion they deserved.
That is true about them ending up at Motown. I also know that song by Jermaine Jackson, but it's not as hot as Sistsers Love's version. I really wish they were bigger, but I guess things happen for a reason. Thanks for your comment!!!
oh YES! what a great group! I'm a 23y. old swiss girl, searching for good music.... and I think I just found my favourite soul ladies right here! never heard of them before - the raylettes I knew, of course. Thanks for posting!
WOW!!! Well I'm so glad that you can appreciate good music like the stuff they recorded!!! I highly recommend the CD I speak of to you!!! So glad you enjoyed this & your welcome!!!
OH WOW, I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE'S ANOTHER FAN OUT THERE!!!!!!! Aren't they great??? I really wish they were huge, but they already are to me anyway!!! Thanks for making yourself know buddy!!!
I never heard of them but they remind me of two of my favorite singers today, Beverly Crawford and Fantasia. Thanks for opening up another avenue of music.
I never heard of them, but I thank you, ThrutheAlcove, for sharing. Maybe I know a song they sing, but didn't know who it was. This is the kind of music I like to clean my house to!!! LOL I know you know what I mean. Something that provokes you to get up and do something. Very practical. I probably wouldn't clean at all if it wasn't for music like this! LOL
Oh I know what your talking about!!! LOL In my house growing up, it was Al Green that played when clean up time arrived!!! LOL I'm all about exposing the rare & obscure songs & artists to everyone. So glad you enjoyed this tribute cause they deserved one!!!
Little Sister with the GREAT Mary McCreary and Vaetta Stewart (Sly's sister who still tours with the alter goup) and Eva Melton
was Sly's back up group appeared on Bandstand
w/2 R&B hits.
Mary worked w/J Cleveland, the Hawkins,Tremaine etc. She put out 3 excellent lps on Shelter(E John told Barb Walters she did the best version of Levon)and ended up marrying the boss, Leon Russell and put
out duet lps with him when he was still really big.
I'm very familliar with Little Sister. I loved "Somebody's Watching You" and "Stanga"!!! And the video of Mary's "Mighty Clouds..." you sent me is HOT!!! Wish I had an mp3 of that!!! Thanks so much for that as well dude!!!
thanks for the post- I never knew about Vermettya takin over or that they put so much out. She is dynamite!
Merry's great Steve Tyrell (now a jazz artist in his own right)produced lp has been put out by Hippo.
Saw Aretha last night in LA at the HOB and she sang a Sly medeley with the exact arrangement that Merry used on that lp.
When Aretha played at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in 71, Merry dueted with Re on I'LL TAKE YOU THERE. MC on Blackbyrds Rock Creek Park & w/Billy P is killer too.
Oh yes, Vermettya is all that!!! But the info that I have about Sisters Love isn't all correct, but I had to give what I knew! What an interesting story about Re & Merry singing together cause I know Aretha don't like female singers like that!!! LOL I'll also check Steve out too, thanks for that!!!
Merry Clayton was the original acid queen in Tommy on the recording before Tina was in the movie. Wasn't Odia Coates Paul Anka's duet partner in Having My Baby?
Wow, I didn't know that about Merry!!! I wish her Ode albums would come out on CD, or at least a compilation of those tracks!!! And yes Odia dueted with Paul Anka, among other things she did as a session vocalist! Thanks so much for that extra info about Merry & for watching!!!
R.I.P. to the Sisters who have passed...I love a strong voice and to have a group of them....too hott! "Are You Lonely"...I MUST find that one ASAP! Thanks for sharing.
That's pretty cool that they were Raeletts! They're certainly soulful... I'm glad ya posted this, cuz I'm gonna have to be on the lookout for some of their music!
That's what's up dude!!! So glad you dig them!!! That CD shouldn't be hard to track down, try Amazon, or Dusty Groove, that's where I got mine!!! Let me know if & when you get it dude, and thanks!!!
This was absolutely something I could feel coming up as an r&b singer, seeking for that soul in the game! This is that feel good right here. And you over there lookin all professional like you're their manager and what not! Thats right Covey, show em how to get fly!
LOL Thanks sis!!! I'm so glad you got into this!!! I didn't know you like old school, but your a singer so I should have known!!! LOL Thanks for the compliment sis!!!
That's what I'm talking about, shirt and tie; looks good on you. Ohh, I was suppose to comment on the music. LOL. This was before my time but I enjoyed the video. You can DJ any of my parties any time.
That was a great video. I have never heard of that group before. But they sounded great. I do remember that performance from The Mack though. I'll make sure and look for that album of Sisters Love. I love music that that from back in the day. Keep on making great videos. Peace!!!!! Your friend always, Jasmine
Well, isn't that wonderful! LOL! This is a really nice Tribute! I'm not just saying that, but I truly mean it! I'm definitely going to inform Vermettya about it.
And also, thanks for the shout out, man! Love ya too, Soul Bro! LOL!!!
OK, I think I am going to have to go on-line & find some of their music! The harmonies are super tight. The sister singing on "I Could Never Make..." is just rediculous! She is a screamer for sure! Another good post, bruh... keep up the good work!
That's my fave song by them, and she worked that!!! From what I understand, she still has it, but her voice is a little lower now cause she's older!!! LOL Glad you could get into it dude!!!
Wow, thanks again for sharing your knowledge of rare soul music in this great video. Those Sista's were sanging for sure, and I DO remember them from 'The Mack' (that scene is classic).
Whaddup Sean!!! You were one of the people I had in mind while making this video!!! So glad you enjoyed this, this was a labor of love & I wanted to expose them to you guys!!! Thanks dude!!!
