The gaming community as a whole needs to turn their backs on these companies and stop buying their crap or it will continue to be done. These companies are squeezing every dime they can out of you....I miss the good old days of cartridges and no DLC.
Say I've already put my DLC games onto another PS3 already, if MY console breaks under warranty and I have to get a new one then I have to buy all my stuff again? O_o
Its what they would prefer, I guarantee it. They just released news about the Vita which will be in the next Game Wrong, that PROVES they would prefer you re-buy your games.
In a particularly egregious instance of on-disc DLC, Capcom is selling cheat codes for Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. You get a pack of cheats for $5.
@pocketmego Haha... if someone had suggested such a thing a few years ago I would have blown it off as a joke. Now, sadly, it's not even surprising anymore.
I knew I'd click with a lot of people on this one. It really makes you re-examine what we consider game ownership in the modern age. More than that, it makes you examine what the GAME COMPANIES consider ownership.
There is a difference between paying for DLC and getting those bytes down the internet onto your console/system and already owning the disc including the bytes on the disc but having to pay again to unlock more of it.
Creepy. The whole concept of ownership is fading into some weird grey area.
Sony is doing this 'creepy' greedy thing to sink some money down the big hole left by the PSN fisco.
I actually am close to not wanting to deal with the PS3 anymore... The updates suck, the restrictions suck. The customer friendliness is rapidly evaporating...
Well good thing to ship the console with just one controller - those kids need to learn how to share sometime right? Get rid of that sense of entitlement and make them into proper adults?
Other consoles were also shipped with just one controller.
Like the Genesis. Or how about Micro Computers like the C64 and Spectrum, shipped with NO controllers. Or in the case of the Spectrum, NO controller ports.
I just have to throw in my two cents to agree about how great Epic Megagames was. Their DOS games were some of my absolute favorites back in the day, even over the NES and SNES games of the time! I probably played Jill of the Jungle more than anything else on my old 286, and One Must Fall 2097's title screen music is still one of my favorite video game tracks of all time.
You are 100% right about how Epic should have advertised the locked DLC on the disc.
I'm fine with them selling me a disc at a budget price and then offering me the opportunity to pay more later if I want to keep playing, but fucking TELL ME first!
Thank you thank you thank you for the reminders of why I don't purchase any modern consoles. In my moments of weakness, you bring me back to reality. Thank you :)
As far as DLC is concerned, I think it's dirty all the way. I think it was always intended to nickel and dime the customer. I doubt it was ever an innovative idea that the industry came up with to extend the life of a game. More and more companies are selling us shit that was ready for the game at launch (whether on the disc or not). And a lot of it is content that would have been included at purchase a decade ago.
Capcom has been including DLC on the disc for awhile. Dirty dirty practice.
...continued... So yeah, the PSN limit is definitely going to rub people with more than 2 PS3s or PSPs the wrong way, but at least we now have easy access to a console deactivation site. And hopefully this will help put more cash in the hard working software developers' pockets by cutting down on cross account sharing.
...continued... The reduction of systems allowed to share games means that game sharing across different users will no longer be as rampant. There is a lot of game sharing going on on Playstation network. If someone lends their account access to a friend and that friend downloads games from that account, those are dollars lost not just by Sony but by the game developer, no matter how large or small. continued...
I actually support the reduction of systems allowed for PSN digital downloaded games. There are a lot of benefits here. Yes, you can now only share a game to 2 systems instead of 5. However, there is now a much easier method to de-authorize systems. Before, if you shared out to the maximum 5 systems, you had to call Sony for a one time re-grant to clear your account so that you could download again. At least now we can de-activate and re-activate at will. continued...
After years of game systems coming with only one controller....Nintendo decides to package the new one with 2? How is that bad...lol...the explanation is bad as to why they are doing it though.
As far as the deal with Epic... that's just one more reason why I'm not getting another current gen console. I'm done with the nickel and dime BS.
Sadly....they will keep doing this kind of thing because consumers are stupid at this point. It's the I GOTTA HAVE IT consumerism even with no value. :(
Sony should at least provide a hard copy at a premium for people who want to pay. I don't like getting nickel and dimed for my hobbies. DLC is so silly.
As for Sony changing it to 2 PS3s. I only own 1 PS3, so I don't care.
Since the very beginning of video games you have never "owned" the game and the companies have been very clear that you own a "license" to play the game, but not the game itself. Now, that is a piss poor move.
DLC is great when done right, Mass Effect and inFamous did it great, and Oblivion and Batman: Arkham City have done it poorly imho.
Ultimately, anything can work well if done correctly. But, DLC opens up SO MANY avenues for abuse...its kind of scary. It is good to hear other people realize that as far as companies are concerned we don't own anything we buy from them.
