never worried about EGT, or had a EGT related failure. These engines are WAY overbuilt. I had a 1.6L @ 35psi, on N2O, revving 7000rpm for a year and a half without issue. Replaced it with a 1.9L running similar. awesome. The nitrous was a mild jet triggerable just off idle for the purpose of eliminating turbo lag. putter along at 1500rpm in 2nd gear, stab the throttle and it'd feel like I got rear-ended, IF I could get traction, otherwise it was a massive two-wheel (thx peloquin!!) smokeshow.
The exhaust you heard during the first run is actually the G60 scirocco i was competing against. Diesels can sound that good too, but not with a turbocharger.
Normally aspirated, or supercharged diesel sound amazing. Check my other videos out to hear one.
so what is the horsepower on this beauty?? 200hp with turbos?? mine had 49hp stock getting about 50mpg :):):) if i get another one, will it be worthy upgrading to turbo or just leave it as it is??
I think its less than 150bhp, lots of torque aswell.
Getting 150bhp from a 1.6 petrol engine of this vintage is difficult!
With a TD u just turn up fuelling and boost along with bigger intercooler so the extra heat doesnt reduce density to such a point that u get higher boost but less air!
My ford 1.8td has 90bhp standard and 130lb/ft.
A bit shit.
The 1.8 none turbo version of mine has 60bhp.
There is also a non intercooled 70bhp version of mine.
thanks! you could just pull all the turbo related parts from a turbo diesel in a junk yard and bolt them on. I used the upper section of a95 golf/jetta diesel downpipe and welded a 2.5" mandrel bend on to join up with a techtonics tuning 2.5" exhaust. Sold that, and will build a 3" mandrel bent right off the turbo for this year. Lots of changes this year actually. Should be able to beat the supercharged miata that eliminated me in this video!
That's too cool! Excellent work. I'm not a turbo or diesel type, so the whole boost on a diesel sounds insane! What's the CR of something like that?
It looks like you've got the handling sorted pretty well, too.
So am I the only one who noticed a Mini on the start line and an underbonnet shot of it flashing past? :) The way you were coming off the line, I'd guess you beat it.???
okay dude, i really dont have the time or money for a turbo. You say adjusting the main screws on the injector could give me more power right? Without horribly killing my gas mileage (it gets 40mpg now, i'd like to keep it above 30mpg), how much power could i get it to have compared to yours?
no. the best thing you can do to a normally aspirated diesel for cheap is let it breathe. Give it a good exhaust. Headers even, from a gas rabbit, and a 2" exhaust. Cut the snorkel off the air filter box and attach (fibreglass?) a larger pipe, that draws only cool air, not hot underhood air.
Buy a head gasket set(and head bolts if they're stretch bolts), pop the head off and give it a basic port@polish job. Unlike a gas engine, you don't need to worry about port turbulence for fuel mixing. Make them as smooth as you can without changing the sizes much. Gasket match the intake manifold to the ports. Lighten the flywheel (that's a big one). THEN start slowly winding in the fuel screw just above the four injection line outputs on the pump until it gets a little smokey.
after this point, there are internal pump mods that make HUGE differences. For the brave and VERY mechanically inclined only. Don't forget, nitrous and diesel are like peanut butter and jam. Match made in heaven.
alright i'm gonna try the fuel screw part and the cold air intake part for now. That screw is on the driver's side of the pump correct? And how far should i turn this in for max power while keepin fuel economy above 30mpg? Is it possible to go too far with the screw? How can i tell? Also, does anyone know anything about swapping the 4 speed manual tranny with a 5 speed manual tranny in them rabbits? If so, please fill me in on what is necessary.feel free to shoot me a message if u want...
4-speed to a 5-speed? What year is your car? I think in '82 VW started the upshift light which has a different reverse light switch than the older models. Other than that, make sure you get the 5-speed "doggy-bone" shift linkages on eBay. Just buy the whole shift rebuild kit and you're set.
Awesome! Kickass driving and one hell of a nice looking car! I bet the person driving the AWD Talon you beat was speechless lol! Were you letting the turbo cool down between runs? I think you increased the value of diesel VW's by 20 percent or so with that video.
acquire the parts that make a diesel a turbodiesel, and bolt them on. intake and exhaust manifold, oil supply and return lines, turbo inlet pipe and airbox, exhaust downpipe and for extra power, a TD injection pump. it'd be nice to have the TD fuel filter stuff too. bolt it all on and have fun. no need to worry about overstressing the engine. it'll take it.
sure. or an A2 or A3 TD golf/jetta. minor differences in the downpipe. A3TD uses a different oil return system but can be adapted to an A1/A2 oilpan. Or just put your own return fitting into your current oil pan. That's about it. should bolt up
NO you cant do that the head on the non turbos are not meant to take the extra heat they will crack and all kinds of problems will come from it and the injector pumps are completely different their are more oiling ports in the turbo blocks and the pistons and rods are built to take more heat in the turbos
Very well done! That was a blast to look at, especially through the smoke:) Wish my diesel rabbit drove like that. I can't wait to show this vid to my friends.
Was this your first time autocrossing? If so you did pretty damn well man. You're steering inputs look a little jerky, but everyone can always work on smoothing those out.
At the end of the 3rd run I heard: "And the impala goes off course" and that made me laugh. Impala. rofl
I love the smoke, it adds character. I've driven a few of those turbo diesel VWs and they're great fun, I've always thought they'd do well at autox since they make such awesome low end power.
Sometimes u get to the turbos maximum boost then to get more power u just fuel more, to get the best out of older diesels for a given boost u will get smoke. Beyond a certain boost u can actually get less air if temp rises to high or u can go beyond turbine envelope of efficiency, u probably know this.
Thanks for the tips. When this video was taken, I didn't even have an intercooler, and it was running stock boost. Like I said in the description, I didn't have much time to develope it before the race.

Before fitting turbo check the following:
does turbo engine have sodium filled exhaust valves or different higher temp ex. valves.
Does Turbo engine have oil cooled pistons.
These r the differences on my ford diesel compared to non turbo.
And the pump is different.
I was running 23psi- wastegate was siezed!
fixed it and now at 18psi- its faster at lower boost aswell, its a temperature/ density thing.

REmember, on bosch pumps as u screw in the fuel screw the idle speed rises, the screw adjusts the picot point on a laver attached to governor.
Good advice, especially the cylinder head part.
Is there a good website for old vw diesels?
tpvalley 4 years ago
The fuel screw can effect idle speed, careful of this, just turn idle down accordingly.
By the way more fuel is a clockwise direction.
