no this is the ps2 remake of the 8 sound novels this one is called higurashi no naku koro ni matsuri and has another ending that is called miotsukushi-hen instead of matsuribayashi-hen and has 2 extra arcs called taraimawashi-hen and tsukiotoshi-hen it also has improved art and voice actors.

You are thinking of the original novels,which were all seperate games you had to buy that all just went by the name of the series and the arc name.

When the PS2 ver of higurashi was made Matsuribayashi-hen wasnt finished so the ones who made the PS2 game had to make their own final arc, it basically is about Rika and Keiichi that together has to solve the problems of both onikakushi, watanagashi and tatarigoroshi (or was it tsumihoroboshi?) to defeat Takano, many belive this is the true end of higurashi since it sadder (Hanyuu dies) but its not true its non canon since it contradicts with saikoroshi-hen

@RingoAkai Actually no your very very wrong Matsuribayashi-hen was already finished. Higurashi Matsuri came out before Higurashi Kai. This game is a remake of Ni and Kai for the PC.

@AuskaNeumaki No you misunderstood me, when the developement of Matsuri began the last sound novel, Matsuribayashi-hen wasn't released yet. They got some of the notes from Ryukishi07 which is why the arks are both kinda similiar in some ways. But since Matsuribayashi-hen wasn't ready the had too start to write something on their own. Since matsuribayashi-hen was realeased 13/8 2006 and Matsuri 22/2 2007. They would only have had 6 months if they had waited for the realeae to make the art and so.

Hanyuu dies..But,it's still a happy ending,though I don't understand why,it seems pretty sad to me(there's nothing fun in Mion and Keiichi preparing for college..).

Umineko no Naku Koro is actually another visual novel by the creators of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni that will be made into an anime like FloorxHead said. Well, since this is the Miotsukushi-hen, the Canal Drying Chapter, which is an alternative ending to the game instead of Matsuribayashi-hen, I'm not that sure. Wikipedia does not say much about it. All it says is that its "a bittersweet, but more meaningful ending".
