Shakespeare's "As You Like It" -- Helen Mirren, Act I,ii

Last night, I watched a small group of actors perform an abridgedment of this fine play in St.Leonards Gardens, East Sussex. They were superb and played with vastly more gusto and spirit than the puppets in this video, most of whom are NOT Shakespearian actors. To play Shakespeare well, you must play him again and again and again.. To pull someone out of a T.V. show and put him or her into one of Shakespeare's plays, is to court mediocrity.

This is the first thing I ever saw Helen Mirren act in. I knew she was marvelous from the first, and I fell in love with Shakespeare to boot.

My dear! I viewed this multiple times on P.B.S. thirty years ago and was somehow strangely entranced by Rosalind. Never having read the play, I've been misquoting ever since. I've always said "How know you this, in the great heap of your wisdom?" . You'd think I'd crack a book. But I got Rosalind right, didn't I?
