Excellent point about the serial killer's mother being an excellent potential parallel. I would love for those guys to proofread my stuff or all Hollywood scripts. I can't wait to see what they think of Clash of the Titans.
I thought it was a brilliant film. The one thing that rang wrong for me was that they used the phrase 'serial killer', which was coined in the seventies.
The phrase used in stories of the time was, I believe, 'mass murderer'.
It's a tiny thing, really. But it broke the mood.
Marcia is brilliant here. The two contrasting mother/son relationship would have turned this into a fantastic film. Also, I have to say that t Angelina Jollie was just too thin. Somebody give that woman a cheeseburger! I couldn't get passed her fragile looks and she couldn't get the passion to manifest because of her weakened physical condition. Anorexia is not strong, not pretty and not the basis for a great performance.
I thought Angelina was rising above a thin set, direction, screenwriting, and acting, and think the Director butchered what could have been a stellar movie. The Police Captain acting is WAY over the top, the characters wear coats, then leave screen doors open in summer months, all the cars are freshly painted, the filtering to make it seem brown, even in the summer, is heavy-handed, and who wears the same hat for five years, season in and out. Marcia is dead -on, Eastwood is an overrated hack.
I loved the movie, but the fact that it is a true story is sad. I dont understand why no one asked Sanford Clark what happened to the boys. Also, why didnt Christine ever ask the fake walter who he really was? the fake walter's family had to be looking for him also.
i agree with Marcia, the movie was mediocre with Jolie doing a variation of what she did in a mighty heart. I simply had to know the facts behind this story and when i found out after that that his mother was a third accompelice it irritated me. and your right they missed out on a great juxtaposition of motherly love there. i really hope Jolie does not recieve a nomination. the movie creates interest in the true story, but disapoints when you see how it manipulated it. 6/10 nice techs
Marcia, it is easy to attack an act of creation but it's not so easy to undertake one. I'd like to read your rendering of this case as written for the screen. Might I remind you that the screenwriter referred to actual court transcripts and writings by the warden of San Quentin to write this film.
I totally enjoyed the movie (saw it yesterday on first day in France).
Though I agree with Marcia on one point. I didn't know the killer used to live with his mother and she was arrested too, and I think Marcia is right here : telling this in the movie would have been a great "counterpoint" to the story of Angelina jolie's character.
But I really enjoyed the movie the way it was and I think it's a great movie.
Marcia you are a sweetheart but I couldn't disagree with you more about this movie. I just came from it and thought it was perfect. I don't need the film to be longer so they can be true to the villain and the villains mother. The story is about the woman an her struggle to get her son back.
Its still a gas to watch and listen to you two! Thanks.
Lorenzo gets it Marcia doesn't, she's too critical and getting too caught up in the details and not seeing the forest for the trees. Its a great film and story. I can look up the facts. Clint Eastwood is an artist and is entitled to portray his spin on the facts and story. It was a great movie.
If you are SPINNING the facts...then it's NOT a true story. It may be TAKEN from a true story, or BASED on a true story... but it's no longer the TRUE story.
The parallel lines drawn by the two mothers in real life- is fascinating. Curiously enough the male director and the male critic fail to see the relevance. I wonder what would Freud make of it
Marcia has a point: if a story is true, then Eastwood should stick to the facts. To do otherwise is to misrepresent the facts. Had Eastwood done the story right, he'd tack on a forth storyline with the evil mother. If Lucas' films can go over time (I for one don't think his films are high art), why can't a true story? Getting in-and-out in 100minutes is so lame! Lorenzo, watch out! Marcia's running circles around you! An Oscar for AJ? Please say it ain't so. I can think of others more deserving.
Marcia.......Agree with you about the screenplay's lack of depth.......and otherwise the film became tedious and sort of uninvolving dispite the extraordinary performance by the killer............it was never believeable that AJ was this simple, no-friends person.....problem with casting a major and very talented and very beautiful woman. Ken
As a documentarian, I understand what she means about the auteur and the motive. TRUE STORY would motivate me more to see the film is this was the case. I will still see it, sounds like it was good.
It won't open in Chicago until Friday- so I haven't seen it yet.
BUT.. I was so interested in it that I read about the TRUE story. Then I looked at facts about the cast and saw that (is this true?) the mother wasn't even portrayed?
She IS a big part of the story - I agree with Marcia - and I am already disappointed that she is-treated like a footnote at best. That doesn't seem right.
And Lorenzo? A happy ending? Huh.I'm intrigued about how that could be.

I think the guy is being a realist, whereas the woman is deliberately trying to bag out a movie that is frankly brilliant.

She was thin because her mother just died. Give the woman a break.
Plus, the real Christine Collins lost a lot of weight during the time she was looking for her son - check out the newspaper pictures from the time.
If an actor messes with his weight for a movie, it's heroic.
If a woman does it, it's anorexic.
Get over the double standard.
Ask 100 people who saw the movie if she manifested passion - she just managed to do it in an understated, period appropriate way.
Just like Clint.

the film had an awful awful screenplay. and, at times, it was all over the place because Clint just doesn't like to take too many doubles.
And what's with Angelina's smile at the end? Absurd, and so out of character.
myfilmblog 3 years ago
she was smiling b/c she knew that her son did something good by helping the other boy escape.
