@leviathon18 He didn't just rape it with wah, he raped it altogether. Just traditional boring pentatonic scale improv instead of all the wild harmonics and tremolo dives :(
@leviathon18 agreed. lazy soloing. that solo originally was technically epic. kirk appears to have lost his chops and is a shadow if the guitar player he once was. shame, as hetfiled still churns out riffs, vocals and metal just as tight and as raw (minus the booze) as he ever did...
WTF !!! U lot must have shit speakers because there is clearly double bass in this performance. Didnt u see the motion capture which Lars did for this song on Guitar Hero Metallica (which came out in the same year as this performance), yes it took him a few attemtpts and the drums he did it on wasnt real im not disputing those fact but when he finally gets it right u can hear him using double bass. I bet half of u who mentioned that there isnt double bass in this song arent drummers anyway :@
@conflictman03 Believe it or not, another band DID cover it. I don't know who. I heard it last week here on YT. I was like "Noooo! That's NOT 'Escape' by Metallica." The song isn't the greatest, but they put it on RTL for SOME reason! Who liked it? Lars?
@purseonal2010 James wrote this song because their record label wanted one of their songs to be played on the radio. So I suppose Metallica didn't like this song because it was too commercial.
@conflictman03 Well, yeah. They weren't into commercialism back then. Who knew that 20+ years later, they'd be a household name, known the world over?
Actually I'm french and it's pretty funny to read some old french hard rock magazines talking about Metallica's first performance in Paris in 1984 (i'm not sure for the year). They were like "Iron Maiden and Metallica aren't music they're just making noise on stage, the only good thing in The Number of the Beast is the artwork" and now all these guys consider Metallica like one of the greatest heavy metal band of all time and The Number of the Beast like a masterpiece...
@conflictman03 There ya go. Some bands just grow on you. Other bands, you know right from the start that they are fuckin great, and have a bright future ahead of them. I found it funny that on a website i was checking out yesterday, on which band is the heaviest, they listed Metallica #1. There was Slayer, Testament, Lamb of God, Kreator, and even Meshuggah listed, some very heavy bands, yet people chose them #1. Could this person who made the list be just a bandwagon jumper? It was funny!
Coming from a drummer who loves Metallica yet still plays with a single bass drum pedal 'cause it's all I need, I strongly agree. Metallica kicks ass regardless of whether Lars is playing double bass drum parts for one measure or not. Double bass drum parts doesn't make the song any greater and it doesn't define what a great drummer is... John Bohnam being the ultimate example of that.
I'm so glad that Metallica is re-learning their stuff from ...and Justice For All, that my opinion of they're best album...only thing is that I hear a distinct lack of prominent double bass drums during this performance.
Metallica hadnt played this because Jason did not have the guts to play this song. That's why I respect Rob, he has the guts to play the hard songs with the bass that was composed by Cliff.
@HetfieldMetallicaWWE Hey idiot, I don't know if you're trolling or what, but um...Cliff was dead when this song was written...and Jason was fucking awesome! Watch Live Shit and then tell me he sucks
@Jacopsman but what's the point of making a kick-ass double bass beat on a song if you won't play it anymore in the future???...that's the thing that i don't understand....i mean, lombardo and lars are almost the same age and lombardo is a machine gun....anyway, Lars is one of my favorite drummers, but it's so sad...
@samuelhimself what about fight fire with fire and Trapped under ice? They play those live and he does double bass, also he is older so he probably cant go as long as he used to
Give me a break. Its not like I'm asking for a 260bpm sixteenth note burst here. Just play the BEST part of the song like you USED to do, not half-assed. Oh, and BTW, Lombardo and Benante still manage to do all of their fills live...and THEY dont get the cushy treatment Metallica get as "road dogs on tour". Not to mention, their drum parts are more physically exerting than any of Lars'. Oh, Dave is 46 and Charlie 48. Lars is 47.
it feels like james doesnt mean the lyrics any more. sorry if it sounds sad but that what this sounds like to me. the song is awesome and the performance is awesome too but just the feeling seems to be gone.
Yeah, because Vinnie Colaiuta (age 55) couldnt play this in his sleep night after night. Or just about any of Lars' contemporaries in metal, who tour as much as Metallica and play far more challenging stuff night after night. Its not like I'm asking him to play 260bpm Kollias double bass fills. And if you watch Lars' live, he does this with all of the old stuff, not just this song. It just stands out here because the original had such cool fills, and he doesnt play them anymore.
4:50 look, it's a shot of lars' feet, and he's playing double bass. You just can't hear it because they always mix the double bass terribly in the live met videos, MORONS
Booo....Lars doesnt even do his tom fills in this song, never mind the lack of double bass. Why bother playing this song when the drum fills are the best part? And they screwed up the solo, it sounds like the rest of the band skipped over a few bars and Kirk wasnt expecting that.
Erm...what is a whinger? I dont think its too much to ask for Lars to put a little effort into playing songs properly considering the boatload of cash he gets for each show.
Wow! This is great..... Almost like listening to the original CD.... Too bad they didn't stay with this more progressive and challenging type of music and sold their souls to corporate "metal" pop of the late 90"S, early 2000'"s.........
Lars use the double bass. But it's not a DVD quality so we listen not good ... But when you listen this musique on your IPOD we listen his double bass !
dude, they should play more of justice, no offense to cliff burton (i'm a bassist and he's my legend), but it was their peak (even though I prefer listening to ride the lightning). I don't care if it's much harder to execute than anything else, that's what they're there for!
Justice is more thrash than kill em all, and we all know it had a bad mastering, so! give us live what you didn't in the studio back in 88!
@souerman123 Trujillo said in a interview that he's trying to put Frayed Ends and Eye of the Beholder on the set list of 'Tallica's concert for years.
@MonkeyDonkey18 Lars uses mic's that are horrible when it comes to recording a DVD, when he is in the studio he uses different mic's...I was there at this show and there was tons of double bass, just can't hear it well on the recording. Check out Live in Mexico DVD or Nimes France DVD...he was using different mics and you can hear all the double bass and it's awesome!
@bobomcfuckfuck420 yeah ive got the live in mexico city and lars whips out double bass all over the place, especially at the end of ride the lightning he tears that shit up!!!!
@MonkeyDonkey18 its very hard to hear, but its most definitely there. the way they capture the bass drum sound for livemet is fucked up so you can't hear it worth a shit. i dont know what the problem is but i wish theyd fix it. before you say im full of shit, watch some fan recorded videos and you can hear the DB better. also the last 2 times ive been to their shows i specifically listened for DB and its absolutely there because you cant just hear it you can feel the thumps throughout your body

@crazyboyxx yeah man, he played awesome solos on Justice.but now he says that he combines pentatonic and mode scales in most of his playing, which i say is pretty awesome. it's also cool how he can just improv in certain parts of his solos live. in this vid though, the solo is not the best
@burmas9595 I'm not a betting man....But you can never be sure, Some of the girls in the front row are pretty hot if we're honest...Coulda got 2 much for papa het

This song is just fucking beautiful with bass.
Zant5976 11 months ago
@crazyboyxx yeah man, he played awesome solos on Justice.but now he says that he combines pentatonic and mode scales in most of his playing, which i say is pretty awesome. it's also cool how he can just improv in certain parts of his solos live. in this vid though, the solo is not the best

jwspitz35 11 months ago
does anyone know what tuning there guitars are in for this song?
mnunez31 11 months ago
@mnunez31 The studio version is standard E. I think this one is a half step down due to Jame's voice.
PandaOfPuppets 10 months ago
@crazyboyxx there is absolutely no sweeping on AJFA but there certainly is some arrpegiation
