Clarke was one heck of a Junior player and enforcer. His style of hockey won them the Memorial Cup and 4 Stanley Cups. His first fight with Dave Barber and the schooling he gave Barber made all his home town fans proud. The Broad Street Bullies would have to go through Gillies!!
The camera was never on his parents in the stands. That was another story!
@pilatunes WHL...The Pat's....Clarke is facing off....glances to the crowd to see what the ruckus is in the stands....just his parents settling things in the stands...
@bertmustin i thought he was phenominal in the last series against edmonton in the stanley cup finals which they lost. he never ever gave up. check out the bob nystrom tribute videos too-another rediculously underrated player.
If you watch that first video closely, you'll notice that your hero Gillies starts punching O'Reilly when he wasn't looking. Figures you use this video...only proves he had no balls against O'reilly. Look at the other 4 posted where Terry kicks this goons ass! By the way, the Bruins never traded O'Reilly...Islanders must have thought alot of him....
@5inthehole ..... Oh.... O'Reilly was the "clean" fighter? Their is enough video on here to make my case. O'Reilly jumped Gillies in the first fight of that playoff series too. Gillies also took the second fight of that series, which they split two fights a piece. The reason O'Reilly never played for anyone else is nobody wanted him! Nice try.... and O'Reilly will NEVER been in the HOF!
@nyerinmo We were not talking about who is a clean fighter. We are talking about the only way Gilies can win a fight against O'Reilly. All I see on you tube is on any fight that the two squared of without Gilies throwing a sucker punch, OReilly kicked his ass! And no matter what you say, the Islander did dump Gillies-The Bruins kept O'Reilly and his number sits up in the Garden rafters.
@lai71690 Just to show our You Tube audience of how ignorant you are of hockey history; You said O'Reilly's number is not in the retired like Gillies. YOU WRONG!, infact Terry's number is retired and rightly sits in the rafters of Boston Garden, right next to their 2010 Stanley Cup Banner!
All of the playoff games did take their toll on him, as it did on many of the Dynasty stars, as his production slowed down t the end. He played over 160 playoff games which was equivalent of 2 extra seasons. He was one of the greatest! Hal ofd famer for sure!
I love the questioning of Gillies being in the HOF. He scored over 300 goals, scored 30 or more 6 times, won 4 cups, made the playoffs i think 13 out 14 seasons. I'm not even going to mention his value as enforcer which allowed Bossy to play fearlessly.
I grew up on the Island in the 70's. I loved the Islanders, and Gillies was my favorite player. Period. I wore #9 in every sport I played. Gillies *skated* on one of the best lines in NHL history. Which meant it was the best line at the time. He could score, and was far more talented a player than the goons he pulverized over his career. Without Gillies, Nystrom and later Goring, those teams never win 4 cups.
Don't know why he's in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Other players have more points and more Stanley Cup rings who are not in the Hall of Fame. Politics maybe?
@wovokanarchy Really, you know of several (any???) players who have more goals and points and Stanley Cups than Gillies who are not in the HOF? I'd like to know who these fictitious players are.
Yeah, Peter Mahovlech with 4 Stanley Cups, 288 goals, 485 assists, 1972, 1976 Canada Cups and the Montreal Cdn most assist record of all time in one season. Number two would be Reggie Leach with 2 Stanley Cups, 1976 Canada Cup, 381 goals, and 285 assists and the NHL record for most goals in the playoffs, a feat Gretzky and Lemieux couldn't break. You need more proof? I can go back to the Montreal CDN teams of the 1950s or 70s? How about the Oilers of the 80s? Gilies was overrated and a goon.
@wovokanarchy Are you related to Ed Hospodar? Clark Gillies a goon? That's just silly as he never had more than 100 PIM in any season!!
Leach and Mahovolich should be in the HOF, but that doesn't mean that Gillies shouldn't. Before there was a Neely or Tochett, Gillies was the ultimate power forward - he could score, pass, skate, check, fight and intimidate. The Islanders would never have won 4 Cups (and 19 straight series!) w/out him. Gillies had v.good stats and was a total winner.
Now everyone has their designated goons that square off. That's like the WWE. Back in the day the best players could handle themselves. Gordie Howe was the toughest player in the league as well as the best when he was in his prime. Bobby Orr also delivered some major beatings when he played. Now, scorers are scorers and goons are goons.
The player that reminds me most of Clarkie is Dustin Byfuglien of the Hawks. He's big, tough, and physical but a scoring threat as well. Don't think he is as good a fighter as Clarkie though.
@beatpunk9, you can thank the Oilers for that. They changed the game dramatically on several levels and not all of it was for the best. And FTR, that's not a knock at all on Gretzky, he was a lot scrappier than people give him credit for. Sather just wouldn't let anyone near him when things got intense.
no doubt about it...when Gillies came on the ice you better not touch Bossy who then of course would score :) ..that in itself is a reason to be in the HOF...team chemistry

First time Clark fought Shultz he lost but everybody with #9 Tattooed to there butts thinks he became the champ when he beat him the second time. All that did was even the series. Lets look at the Best at the time the True champ Behn Wilson Who made gillies look like a little boy the way he pounded him down to the ice. There 2nd Fight Wilson Droped him BOOM! with a beauty right on the chin! I could go on and on but I made my case and the verdict is....... Guilty of Fraud!
Hallucinations are fun though...second fight was not quite that way...P.S. If the pussy (WILSON) would take the potty off his head he would have gotten a better beating!
He had potty in an era of less head-potties and he is a "tough guy"? SUkkkA muh dikka you floppy cunt!
Biggest Islander fan in the world, and I loved Jethro, but if he's in the hall Bobby Nystrom should be too. Next to the word "heart" in the dictionary is a picture of B.N.
Grets & Co. were great, but as a two-way line, Trots & Co. were better. The oilers had so much scoring power they didn't need to mind the defensive end. The Isles had 8 guys with serious injuries in 1984, and Nilan broke Tonelli's shoulder with seconds to go in the Mtl. series.
Clark "Jethro" Gillies was a better policeman than Dave Semenko of the Oilers. And Gillies could score key goals too. Great tribute to a great player.
lmao you are such a HOMER! The greatest line ever was Gretzky, Kuri and Andersen. Not only did they shatter all of the scoring records as a line, but they all 3 are still in the top 10 all time in playoff goal scoring...and I'm not even an Edmonton fan!
The goal at 1:30 was against the Rangers in the 3rd period of game 1 of the 1975 Preliminary Round. It was the game-winner. There are many Islanders fans on youtube with old clips which I love. Can anyone find me JP parise's OT series winning goal from that 1975 series? It's hard to find though I know the game was broadcast but not on WWOR since they only did road games.
The game was on cable, as Islander Ranger games including playoffs ALWAYS were until 1994, when they aired on ABC. Fans wax poetic now, but many people (esp. back then) had to go to Roosevelt Raceway or a sports bar to watch those playoff games of 1979 and 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 etc.
Gillies is a legend no doubt. A do it all power forward. His Nephew Colton Gillies looks like he will make a similair impact in the NHL. Colton Gillies is a Saskatoon Blade (WHL) and was selected in the 1st round of this years NHL draft. Like his uncle, he's talented and throws viscous hits. Colton also has some of the sickest shootout moves ive ever seen. I cant wait to see this kid develope.
yeah Gillies won the majority of his bouts with Terry no doubt. That;s why the Bruins drafted Miller and Lyndon Byers, and Byers kicked Gillies ass. Granted Byers was 21 an Gillies was 32, but both were both were about 5 years away from their primes as fighters, which both probert and Kocur said is between 28 and 30 for most fighters when you calculate strength and experience.
Clarke Gillies is the best fighter E-V-E-R. He could also play the game, a reason why he was drafted so. I will never forget him fucking up Eddie Hospodar at the Garden in the 1981 playoffs. Rangers suck cock lol
Clark was the toughest player to play the game. Fought when he had too, but was a good player also. No tougher than him ever to play. He was too big too fast for most guys. May have lost a bout or two but always regained the title!!!!
Well done... thanks for the tribute. Thing that most people have to understand about Jethro was that he was NOT a goon. Check out his career penalty minutes. He hated fighting, but he knew he was good at it, and he had to protect the team's hard nosed reputation. The quintessential power forward. That's why he's in the Hall of Fame. Probably the most underrated player in the Isles dynasty based on his entire contribution to the team.
Long and short of it, O'Rielly never won a cup (Gillies won four) and O'Rielly never out scored Gillies....
