The metal piece behind the headstock is for holding allen keys that are used for the bridge and locking nut. It was very common during the 80's. you don't see them anymore.
I remember those. Those were some of my favorite guitars back then. If you can find some of the old Guitar Magazines from the early '90s they had an advertisement in there with a hot redhead holding one that was WAY Hot!

I wish Jackson didn't just do super heavy metal but did the same thing as charvel also but I guess that why there is both companies from nice sparkly and warm cleans and blues and classic rock:fender, heavy rock and clean and subtle metal:charvel, finally heavy metal modern metal and all of the extreme stuff:jackson
That thing on the back of the charvels neck well I think it's for the Allen wrench I've seen them on jackson head stocks and it's possible your guitar is custom made since charvel makes custom guitars.
This is problably a 1986 model 275 the logo is called the "tooth paste" logo pretty good deal for a damn mountain bike.....hey i gotta bike wanna trade haha

ha im not gonna take the time to read through all the comments to see if this question has been answered but in case it hasnt... the thing on the back of the head... is it an allen wrench holder? alot of floyd rose guitars have that there

Its a 1989 Deluxe they had the pickups in that configuration on very few of them. then by the time 90 hit they totally changed it out. But kinda kept the curvy humbucker thing going on the bridge. There is some information about the models on a few of the Charvel sites. But Charvels seem to have a huge lag in their serials. between the late 80s to mid 90s, a lot of them are easily confused. Most of the guitars they made in that time frame its hard to use serials to find out what you have.
My only question would be was how much the Mountain Bike was originally bought for and what year it was purchased. If it was some Wally World mountain bike you clearly won out on that one.
i own an avenger, the Rhoads "v" made by Charvel. identical to that guitar, cept for the body. Same P-up's etc. The toothpaste logo is the word your looking for, and the thing on the back of the headstock is to hold allen keys for tightening the locking nuts.
Most I can do is tell you that the head stock has the "Toothpaste Logo", the "thing" on the back is for holding 2 types of "allen wrenches"...One for the tremolo bar and one for the neck, and I can only tell you what fakes have and charvels don't: Fakes don't have the gasket, fakes HAVE a stripe down the back...Mostly with almost all (somtimes)...The dust shows that its REALLY old, and fakes are a more recent thing. That body is un-common, but not totally un-heard-of (bodies like that).
weird, never seen one like it before, at first i thought it was a custom one off until i read previous comments by more knowledgeable players, cool looking guitar.
Im sure you already may have found out but the logo used there is called the toothpaste charvel logo which is the later charvels but the flyod rose stamped with charvel means that it is a early production of the 275/278 models later which are stamped with Jackson on the tremelo.
The back plastic unit is a allan wrench holder ro screw unscrew the fixed tremelo on the neck.
This guitar is one of the lower models of there production line the 750XL is the best one.
This guy is SORT of right...He is wrong about it being related to the line of the 750xl's, but he is right about the 275/278...Well, kind of. It is defenitaly NOT a 278, but it is a 275...Or atleast a VERY good copy. This has more "curve" than some pictures of the 275, but yet has no arch-top as some of the 275's...I call this REAL, but a VERY older model...Possibly from one of the first lines,
Yes this is a 275 Deluxe, made in Japan in 1990 or 1991. The thing on the back of the headstock is to put Allen keys, for the Floyd Rose tremolo adjusting and locking system. Hope that helped :)
Just like the others say, my friend had one back in 1990 he bought brand new except it had active pickups and a Kahler tremolo but it was the same red and headstock. Very cool red eighties/nineties metal guitar. Good trade if you ask me.
hey you bought an axe,,,little diferent..does it play well like you do? who cares where it comes from..play it enjoy it..i bought my bro an american mad model 6 25 years ago and still his main toy...got a nasty Dean flying v flame series to..worth about 8 grand now
Nifty, i've never seen one of those. Interesting pickup arrangement. I have, I believe a model 3 with the toothpaste logo. It's s/s/h and I like it better than my PRS CE24 when I feel like playing blues. Mine was made in Fort Worth Texas though. not foreign. Bought it for 250 bucks in 1996 from my uncle, I will probably never part with it, it's a good guitar, I have had so many pickups in and out of my PRS I lost count, but the Charvel I like just how it is, go figure, in comparison to PRS.
Definitely looks to me like an 89/90 Charvel 275. I've got a 375 and love it. The weird thing on the back of the headstock is a place to store allen wrenches. Mine still has the original wrenches i it. And the logo is referred to as a "toothpaste" logo.
its a model 275/278 korean, just bought one yesterday for 125 with hardshell. cheap pickups, typical for them to be weak. they were made in 1980 and 1990. just check out their catalogue and you will see it, nothing special, just older
It actually may just be a guitar that someone else built from the hardware of a previous charvel guitar. that would explain the weird tunning extra knob thing. My friend has built guitars from charvel hardware befoire and it looks like some has done it to yours. Not that it's a bad guitar or anything but Im pretty sure that it's not a true charvel.
i wil make a vid of mine latter 4 you. the logo is the old one from the 80s. mine as every thnig on it you can see it in my drum vids. its a 86 deluxe m8
congrats you have a 1986 charvel mod3 deluxe its deluxe as it has the 5 way switch and the original charvel headstock the guitar was made by charvel and jackson hence the unusual logo :)
17 but i know a f*ck load bout charvel and jackson :P
odd my friends friends dad has on but his is usa made and its a discontinued model late 80's i think but his has a jb and a hot rail's same body shap litttle better paint job but over all the same id say its a Japanese made on around the same time....farly nice guitar from what i played of it so yea....but yea
@XxSconeManxX It is an Allen Wrench holder. I had a Model 6 a while back. That script logo was along the lines of the Jackson logo. For a while they were Jackson/Charvel.
That is the original "toothpaste" logo and most likely a 425 deluxe super strat made in the early nineties. Don't let go of it. You won't find another one like it unless you really try. P.S. Don't bother Charvel with it either, as I have found out, they just don't care unless you fill their coffers.
this is a japan series guitar i had the same problem i brought a guitar like it but in black and it was basically the same toke it to a shop (pmt music) and they told me abit about it also a thing with charvel what are made in usa which are proper charvel only have 4 digits in the seriel number not sure how many urs has but mine has six hope this helps
That is definately a different one. 22 frets? A humbucker and a single coil and only one volume knob. the thing on the back of the headstock is to hold allen wrenches. The script logo came later, so this guitar is probably late 80s/early 90s. the pickups at the bottom, man...i cantget over it.....ive never seen that, all slanted. but yeah im quite a charvel expert, so hit me up.
It is possibly an older 80's model. As for the "thing" on the back of the headstock, it is to hold allen key wrenches for the floyd rose, ect, ect. But, PeelinCaps, may be right, if he has one, then thats proof there my friend.
The little peice on the back of the neck holds allen keys for the nut and trem. The trem is a super high quality piece made in Germany by Schaller. Schallers by the way are the BEST floyd rose systems anywhere period. Too bad you didn't get the hardshell "chainsaw" case with it! Nice axe, very rare so don't sell it.

This is a Charvel Fusion. They're sweet sounding and they are definitely NOT CHARVETTE'S. This is a high quality Japanese made guitar. Commonly referred to as the 'toothpaste' logo series. Common in the late 80's and early 90's. I love mine, it sounds killer..
I also wanted to note to anyone out there who is thinking about buying a Charvel from someone or a pawn shop - even thought charvettes were made in Asia some of these guitars they made had a "Fort Worth" stamp on it (these typically had a large size Charvel Logo exaclty as the one in this video and NO suink Stripe) but know that some of them were actually made in Asia. Nice guitar BTW.
BTW, Charvettes are VERY good guitars, some Charvel collectors pay top dollar for Charvettes, especially ones that have the "Charvette by Charvel" logos - I would like to have one :-)
My opinion: You have an asia made Charvette by Charvel. Charvel would at times NOT place the "Charvette by Charvel" in the headstock and simply put "Charvel" in large size (which is what your headstock has). Of course you could have one of the extremely rare employee fabricated Charvel but I doubt it because it has no Skunk Stripe and a Charvette size large logo, characteristic of the asia plant they were made in. Charvettes regularly had no skunk stripe.
Im a Charvel enthusiast...first thing is that there is no skunk stripe on the back of the neck which is always a sure sign that the neck is not Charvel since all Charvels (except for a precious few) have skunk stripes. But then I see your twelve fret markers are correct (they are positioned closer together than a regular guitar, characteristic of all Charvels) The logo is large that's a bad sign BUT you do have the Charvel neck plate (but that could also be fake) My guess is..see next comment
the piece behind the headstock is a hex key holder. There were 2 hex keys that came with the guitar to adjust the trem and truss rod. The guitar was part of charvel/Jackson so most of the guitars had Jackson style logos.
grover jackson(jackson guitars) and wayne charvel(charvel guitars) were originaly working under partnership until they went there seperate ways. so possibly the guitar could have come from an early design from before 1978
just got a nice charvel fusion custom today so i did some research mine has same headstock logo because they were part of jackson and a made in japan sticker still on it
I have the same model Charvel. It is a Charvel read the other comments left by others. I did alot of modifying to mine but it does rip!!!!!!!! I use it in a Lamb Of God cover, check it out!!!
You got the good end of the trade :) BTW like michaelcalifornia32 said, it's a schaller tremelo made in germany, I's on of the best tremelo systems around.
i just buyed a bright yellow charvette but it really plays like a dream! the problem is that I really never seen another one like this. behing the neck it says model 270by i guess that the by is for bright yellow or something and i've only seen Charvels 270 models wich is weird...if anyone can help me or has a similar model,I might put up a video of it soon
I have the same guitar..It is a 1989-1990 Charvell 275 Deluxe..If you take the neck off of the body it will have a stamp behind the neck "275 DX" in black ink...The guitar was made in Japan after Grover Jackson sold out the Charvell name to a Japanese company..The thing you pointed out on the neck is where an allen wrench is held..The bridge is made in Germany by Scaller under the Floyd Rose design..hope that helps!
well what you wanna do is take the serial number, type in on google "identify your charvel" and the serial number will tell what year, model, and where it was made
I have a similar guitar. Looked it up and it turns out to be a cheap Japanese guitar from AFTER the Grover Jackson era. It's not worth a lot of money, mine is even uglier than yours, but she growls like a tiger and sounds a lot better than some really expensive guitars. Keep her, clean her up, and give her the love she deserves and she'll be your mistress forever.
Yeah ! like the guy said earlier its a 275 deluxe.I had the same one in white, around 1991 same pick-ups, bridge (single locking though) before i quickly converted it to a double locking bridge
i have the same guitar. it's a charvel model 275 deluxe. made in japan. it IS a charvel logo, but it was only used for import guitars between late 1989-early 1991. hope i helped a little bit!
Hiya, stumbled upon your video. Looks like you have a Charvel 275, made approx 1990 probably?
I tried to post a scan of the page, but youtube will not let me. If you want more info head over to audiozone dk, open the catalog scan pages, scroll down to catalog 1990-1, and open the page number 13. There it is, the same type but in white.
Least, I think it is the same!! Nice guitar...like the other folks say, now add some videos of you rocking out!! :D
the five position switch is all the way up its on the neck pu the second position neck and middle pu third position all three pu fourth pos. middle and bridge pu and last pos. all the way down just the bridge pu
I have the model 375+ version of this guitar. The 22 fret Indian rosewood fretboard/rock maple neck with the large logo, neck plate/gasket and the Shaller/Charvel tremolo are familiar to my guitar. It's my favorite guitar. What is the serial number on your Charvel? Mine was made in 1992 from Japan with serial #35748x.
The serial is 347649. Satchboogie (don't know if you know him) has found that it might be a 275.
Also, I strung it with some Dean Markley Ynwie Malmsteen #8811 strings. 8, 11, 14, 22, 32, 48. Oh mand it sounds bad :( I don't know if it is the compound of the strings or the gauge.
I am going to order the Dean Markley #8825 super v set soon.
How do you adjust the pickup height? I don't have springs or anything. Should I shim them up?
I don't think pickup height ain't gonna matter with those pickups. It looks like you got those J-100 covered singles(THE worst pickups in existence imho :(. Those pu's are so lousy that I could almost prefer real vintage strat pu's over these. You could also try a more balanced heavier gauge set than that YJM set. What do I know? I haven't even heard it or as of yet so I really can't say other than replace those pu with some dimarzio 4 wire single humbuckers and that switch for a super switch.
This guitar is not like your fixed bridge Rich that I see in the back. That tremolo's baseplate needs to be adjusted by tightening the spring screws via back of the guitar until the baseplate is level with the body after tuning it. And it needs to be re-intonated for the new guages installed. Go to the Floyd Rose website for the complete instructions on the complete setup. Or you can just have the tremelo "set up" at any shop for small fee since it's really easy.
For pickup recommendations, I use a tonezone humbucker for my bridge although you may have to screw in a pickup mounting ring and hope that it could fit because a slant bridge hum'r could be a very good thing. :). I would use a ProTrack or chopper for the neck pu. These pu's have proven to me that they could sound brutal with that rosewood/maple neck(I don't think a body wood type for pu's matter as much as for the neck wood type) if that is what you after. Damn, you got a good project guitar.
"A Pro Track (DP188) in the neck position and Tone Zone S (DP189) in the bridge position should be good. You might keep the original middle pickup stock, or replace it with a Cruiser (DP187)".
Also I will be taking her in for a complete set up job. Tried myself and said fuck it! That intonation is a MF'r! I'll have the truss, bridge and the whole thing done for $60 in an hour.
ALSO, you may have to scoop out some wood underneath the laminate top for both the bridge and neck pickups. Otherwise those pu's won't fit because of the stenciled shape of the pu. For example, have a look at a more modern H-S-H guitar i.e. Ibanez and you'll see a "V" routed out for the single coil pu. Only one side needs to be scooped out. No worry it won't affect th overall tone of the geet. My model 375 didn't have it either so I took my Dremel and carving bit and went New Yankee on her.
that thing on the back of the headstock is for hold the allen wrenchs there should be two screws on in it or two holes rather to put screws that go perpindicular to the guitar then the allen wrenchs go parrell to the guitar and the screws are tightend to hold it there firmly
No shit? Allen wrenches? You are correct, two screws and two holes. Thanks for that info. It makes sense because you need them to tune ... thanks, I appreciate it. It was driving me nuts!
Keepem coming people! I'd also like to know the origin of the guitar and year.
Thanks Pat. You should see it now. I stripped it down and cleaned it with a tooth brush. All metal components are clean and lubed with silicone. I polished the body and head stock and reconditioned the fret board. She almost looks brand new. :)
Leave it to PATMAN. You are correct Pat. I checked the guitar bluebook, it is a Japanese custom. That explains why we cant find it even in Google images. It is an early 80's model that retailed from $1100 - $1300.00.
I think I'll keep it. :)
Got new strings and tremelo bar on the way now. I'll keep you posted.

This guy is SORT of right...He is wrong about it being related to the line of the 750xl's, but he is right about the 275/278...Well, kind of. It is defenitaly NOT a 278, but it is a 275...Or atleast a VERY good copy. This has more "curve" than some pictures of the 275, but yet has no arch-top as some of the 275's...I call this REAL, but a VERY older model...Possibly from one of the first lines,
GuitarTube11 2 years ago

DustinG28 2 years ago
Definitely looks to me like an 89/90 Charvel 275. I've got a 375 and love it. The weird thing on the back of the headstock is a place to store allen wrenches. Mine still has the original wrenches i it. And the logo is referred to as a "toothpaste" logo.

its a model 275/278 korean, just bought one yesterday for 125 with hardshell. cheap pickups, typical for them to be weak. they were made in 1980 and 1990. just check out their catalogue and you will see it, nothing special, just older
rjimu1 2 years ago
If the neck plate says Ft. Worth texas its not a american made charvel! I own one with that being on the neck plate but its still a solid guitar!
dsvogel420 2 years ago
It actually may just be a guitar that someone else built from the hardware of a previous charvel guitar. that would explain the weird tunning extra knob thing. My friend has built guitars from charvel hardware befoire and it looks like some has done it to yours. Not that it's a bad guitar or anything but Im pretty sure that it's not a true charvel.

That is the original "toothpaste" logo and most likely a 425 deluxe super strat made in the early nineties. Don't let go of it. You won't find another one like it unless you really try. P.S. Don't bother Charvel with it either, as I have found out, they just don't care unless you fill their coffers.

GuitarTube11 2 years ago

BTW, Charvettes are VERY good guitars, some Charvel collectors pay top dollar for Charvettes, especially ones that have the "Charvette by Charvel" logos - I would like to have one :-)
justavid 2 years ago

The guitar is from the xl series. It's either a 650 or 750 xl. I can't tell.
imdashit5 3 years ago
wow, you're way off on that one buddy Both the 650 and 750 and model 6 are NOT bolt ons. The 650 is a neck through, and the 750 is a set neck.
I actually prefer the toothpaste charvel logo, and i think it's rarer.
lazychump 3 years ago
not true. My 650 has this same floyd rose, not neck thru
imdashit5 3 years ago
can't be a 650 then..most likely 550.
All model 6's and 650's are neck-thru. 650's came after model 6's, and have a toothpaste logo (and 5 way selector isntead of the 3 switches)
models 1-5 were bolt on.
check wikipedia, or the jackson charvel import pages and forums. Either way, killer guitars!

Imat00l 3 years ago
Hiya mat,
The serial is 347649.
Thanks for the help
Paul
therustyaxe 3 years ago
I don't think pickup height ain't gonna matter with those pickups. It looks like you got those J-100 covered singles(THE worst pickups in existence imho :(. Those pu's are so lousy that I could almost prefer real vintage strat pu's over these. You could also try a more balanced heavier gauge set than that YJM set. What do I know? I haven't even heard it or as of yet so I really can't say other than replace those pu with some dimarzio 4 wire single humbuckers and that switch for a super switch.
Imat00l 3 years ago
The strings are junk (quality is good but more for malmstein). I am waiting on some new Dean Markley Super V's. .10,13, 17,30,42,52.
What models for the Dimarzio's should I be looking at? Are these bodies made of basswood?
Thanks for your help and advice. :)
therustyaxe 3 years ago
This guitar is not like your fixed bridge Rich that I see in the back. That tremolo's baseplate needs to be adjusted by tightening the spring screws via back of the guitar until the baseplate is level with the body after tuning it. And it needs to be re-intonated for the new guages installed. Go to the Floyd Rose website for the complete instructions on the complete setup. Or you can just have the tremelo "set up" at any shop for small fee since it's really easy.
Imat00l 3 years ago
For pickup recommendations, I use a tonezone humbucker for my bridge although you may have to screw in a pickup mounting ring and hope that it could fit because a slant bridge hum'r could be a very good thing. :). I would use a ProTrack or chopper for the neck pu. These pu's have proven to me that they could sound brutal with that rosewood/maple neck(I don't think a body wood type for pu's matter as much as for the neck wood type) if that is what you after. Damn, you got a good project guitar.
Imat00l 3 years ago
You guys are right!
Dimarzio Emailed me and said the following.
I'll have the truss, bridge and the whole thing done for $60 in an hour.
therustyaxe 3 years ago
ALSO, you may have to scoop out some wood underneath the laminate top for both the bridge and neck pickups. Otherwise those pu's won't fit because of the stenciled shape of the pu. For example, have a look at a more modern H-S-H guitar i.e. Ibanez and you'll see a "V" routed out for the single coil pu. Only one side needs to be scooped out. No worry it won't affect th overall tone of the geet. My model 375 didn't have it either so I took my Dremel and carving bit and went New Yankee on her.
Imat00l 3 years ago
Ok, What the hell is a 5 position switch for if you only have 3 PU's?
