Iran's player who gives the final pass to Bagheri to make Iran's first goal is in a clear OFFSIDE situation, he is between the goalkeeper and the first defender when he gets the ball from his mate, there was only one opponent (Bosnich) beween him and the goal line and there should have been at least two. You can blame the loads of missed chances during the match too.

Offside rule is designed to prevent forward players of the opponent from hiding behind the defenders to then net easy goals! This crearly WAS NOT the case becuase it was an all out attack that also resulted in Azizi falling to the ground and but still going for the ball in the fast dynamics of the play. There was no hiding to receive ball. He had fallen to the ground. There was no deception!

number 11 Azizi who assisted Bagheri was clearly pushed by the Australian defender (that could have been a PK) and thus was not in offside, he was involved in that play with the ball when he was pushed into that far position.

Mates, you don't know the off-side rule at all, the regulations don't contemplate the intention of the player at all, he is offside or not, and he only had one defending player between him and the goal line, so he was OFFSIDE. Plus if Azizi's action deserved a penalty, there would be fifteen penalties and ten red cards every match. To blow for a penalty it must be something much worse.

watch it again. Azizi passed two Australian deffenders, he is the one who is bringing the ball into the area for action. He is double teamed with one going for the ball and the other clearly for his legs (any worse than that and it'll be Rugby) that would make it a faul and thus a penalty but the advantage is given simply because Iran ended up with the ball again.

Blame it on Venables for leaving Milan Ivanovic, our best defender, on the bench the whole match! He should have brought him on at 2-0.

This was a tragic night, but I cant help but think it was a blessing in disguise, as this would have been a short term fix for the game here.

Qualifying for Germany was much more vital.
