  • cool. i'm taking glassblowing rightnow in pvphs. on of five high schools in america that offers glassblowing.

  • Great video. Just to clarify, the Phoenicians were responsible for introducing glass blowing to the Romans. The Phoenicians descended from the Canaanites, who lived at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea in Sidon, Tyre and Byblos (And elsewhere) From around 1200 BC they became one of the most successful traders of the ancient world and were conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, whereby the skill of glass blowing was passed onto the Romans. Just a small tid-bit to chew on.

  • wow..

but most glass you will see is made in factories in molds and stuff

  • Nice equipment!!!

  • "Yes. It felt like my face was melting off." LOL! Awesome video, thanks for that!

  • come live in arizona...you would think the "hotshop" is nice weather compared to our 120 degree heat in august, with 60% humidity in the mix. fun times!

  • im not sure what magical part of Arizona you live in where it regularly gets above 110 and where you have 60% humidity...especially considering that summer humidity in Sonora is 10-20% during a very wet summer.

  • never been to arizona but i believe it god that would be fckin hot.

  • glory holes are facinating

  • My friends dad blows glass, he likes to do fish and stuff mostly, it's really neat! He let me make a paperweight so I could see how it's done. :)

  • Heat penetrates through a wet oven cloth a lot quicker than a dry one, so why doesn't the same apply to paper?

  • the glass doesnt physically touch the paper. the glass is riding on a bed of steam the is created from the heated water. It does get hot though. the thicker the paper the better and you keep adding water to cool it down.

  • the water in the paper is turned into steam. The layer of steam is what the glass rides on and the steam barrier is what protects the flesh. He didn't say, but once you start to get smoke from the paper it's time to redip it in the water.

  • actually it doesn't have to be that wet. just a little damp. once the paper is broken in, it builds up a nice layer of carbon on the surface that the glass rides on

  • because the paper is burning and the carbon in the ash acts as a buffer

  • I used to do glass when i was younger, my great grandfather thought me how to do so, it was fun till he died and i stopped doing it.

the last piece he had made my younger brother broke when he was 3 years old.

    a shame :/

  • ...cool story

  • (L) "the glory hole"

  • She's hot!

  • i've been to an actual glass blowing process. . .and it's SO HOT in there.!! lol. . .

  • Yes it is. It's very hot. But it's worth it. The process is fascinating to watch.

  • Love it ......this is fascinating!!!!

  • WOW...............fascinating..............

  • WOW...............fascinating..............

  • no sound?

  • Many people have had that same problem. YouTube had been testing out a new video player, and for some people the sound doesn't work. I would check to see if the video player sound is turned on. The sound is located on the bottom right hand corner of the video player. I hope that helps!

  • sorry but...LOL! "gloryhole" wonder where that name came from!?

  • Hello I went to my first year of high school I was in a 3d art class we learned to blow glass.I love it so much.please any one with info about glass blowing class or someone I can talk to in San Diego CA please respond

  • i used to live there but i don't kow of any. Just look it up. i'm sure you could find SOMETHING>.

  • Check out UCSD craft center

  • Hi, a good place to start in San Diego is in Balboa park where a lady teaches weekend classes in glass blowing in an outdoor environment and she's really cool. It takes place in a small plaza where all the art shops are at. Ask around the plaza area and someone will aim you in the right direction. It's well worth it so good luck and tell her that that silent glass guy on a bicycle from Arizona told you about her. Have fun, you'll never regret it! Jim

  • i want to see the girl gather...or at least 'attempt' to.

  • I've been taking glassblowing class this semester and it's amazing. A lot harder than it looks. I'm so glad we have an air-conditioned studio.

  • Ahhh, but this doesn't really tell you how its made. Funny that glass blowers know very little about there own process.

  • thats weird. how what is made. the video shows everything while he describes what the tools are doing to it. and he simplified his descirptions so that people could understand what he was saying. glass terminology can get tricky when its between glassblowers.

  • Did anyone else notice just how far away the annealer was from the bench. I'm sure they normally knock off closer but for camera purposes did it there. All I can think about though is that assistant and his toasting hands, he's a trooper. Great job guys and great interview.

  • Glassblowing is like nothing else.........

  • He said gloryhole.

  • "looks like they're doing something illegal" AHAHAHAH!

    great video

  • I finished my glass blowing class.

It was amazing, so much harder than it looks.

    Ive got a video up.

  • I enjoy the glory hole aswell (())

  • I love it !

  • Im taking glass blowing lessons in a few weeks. This is an amazing art. Ive loved it since set eyes on it. Great video!

  • It is an amazing art. I was fascinated by it, and wish I was taking classes. But I'll admit, standing by the furnaces would take some getting used to. Thanks for the comment. By the way, your name is awesome. Did you get the idea from the movie Big?

  • Youre the first person to pick up on that :D Most people think its from Star Trek or something.

I took a look around the shop the other day. It was about 90 outside. It must have been well over 100 in there. I think the heat is worth it.

  • our shop is outdoors with an awning over it. even when its 40-50 degrees outside, its around 80-90 degrees in there. and during the summer or on a hot day, its almost unbearable.

  • All your videos are very educational and fun to watch. You're a great host/hostess, better than most on the Boob-Tube. We have a glass blowing shop here in Coeur d'Alene. Some of the designs are breathtaking. When I have time I'm going to sit back with a cup of tea and watch all your great videos = )

  • Thanks so much! I was so amazed by the amount of talent it takes to make blown glass. I had no idea. It really blew me away!

  • It's most definitely a specialized craft.

  • Hey I Love all your videos!
