I saw people glassblowing first hand when I was in Venice. It was amazing, the precision, he made a sculpture of a clown using different coloured glass. It was fab I'd love to try it myself some day.
i want to do that for the rest of my life. i always wanted to do a job that involves art, and playing with fire! like what KFCHambone said, im totally going to collage for this
Great video. Just to clarify, the Phoenicians were responsible for introducing glass blowing to the Romans. The Phoenicians descended from the Canaanites, who lived at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea in Sidon, Tyre and Byblos (And elsewhere) From around 1200 BC they became one of the most successful traders of the ancient world and were conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, whereby the skill of glass blowing was passed onto the Romans. Just a small tid-bit to chew on.
come live in arizona...you would think the "hotshop" is nice weather compared to our 120 degree heat in august, with 60% humidity in the mix. fun times!
im not sure what magical part of Arizona you live in where it regularly gets above 110 and where you have 60% humidity...especially considering that summer humidity in Sonora is 10-20% during a very wet summer.
the glass doesnt physically touch the paper. the glass is riding on a bed of steam the is created from the heated water. It does get hot though. the thicker the paper the better and you keep adding water to cool it down.
the water in the paper is turned into steam. The layer of steam is what the glass rides on and the steam barrier is what protects the flesh. He didn't say, but once you start to get smoke from the paper it's time to redip it in the water.
actually it doesn't have to be that wet. just a little damp. once the paper is broken in, it builds up a nice layer of carbon on the surface that the glass rides on
Many people have had that same problem. YouTube had been testing out a new video player, and for some people the sound doesn't work. I would check to see if the video player sound is turned on. The sound is located on the bottom right hand corner of the video player. I hope that helps!
Hello I went to my first year of high school I was in a 3d art class we learned to blow glass.I love it so much.please any one with info about glass blowing class or someone I can talk to in San Diego CA please respond
Hi, a good place to start in San Diego is in Balboa park where a lady teaches weekend classes in glass blowing in an outdoor environment and she's really cool. It takes place in a small plaza where all the art shops are at. Ask around the plaza area and someone will aim you in the right direction. It's well worth it so good luck and tell her that that silent glass guy on a bicycle from Arizona told you about her. Have fun, you'll never regret it! Jim
thats weird. how what is made. the video shows everything while he describes what the tools are doing to it. and he simplified his descirptions so that people could understand what he was saying. glass terminology can get tricky when its between glassblowers.
Did anyone else notice just how far away the annealer was from the bench. I'm sure they normally knock off closer but for camera purposes did it there. All I can think about though is that assistant and his toasting hands, he's a trooper. Great job guys and great interview.
It is an amazing art. I was fascinated by it, and wish I was taking classes. But I'll admit, standing by the furnaces would take some getting used to. Thanks for the comment. By the way, your name is awesome. Did you get the idea from the movie Big?
our shop is outdoors with an awning over it. even when its 40-50 degrees outside, its around 80-90 degrees in there. and during the summer or on a hot day, its almost unbearable.
All your videos are very educational and fun to watch. You're a great host/hostess, better than most on the Boob-Tube. We have a glass blowing shop here in Coeur d'Alene. Some of the designs are breathtaking. When I have time I'm going to sit back with a cup of tea and watch all your great videos = )

purpleownz176 3 years ago 2
Heat penetrates through a wet oven cloth a lot quicker than a dry one, so why doesn't the same apply to paper?
HarryPuntCunnington 3 years ago 3

tucknroll14435 2 years ago
because the paper is burning and the carbon in the ash acts as a buffer

I used to do glass when i was younger, my great grandfather thought me how to do so, it was fun till he died and i stopped doing it.
the last piece he had made my younger brother broke when he was 3 years old.
