That Fred Astaire sure has some great moves Shawn! With you knowing so much about the human body any chance you could start a new series and teach us to dance like him? So when we want to swing hard we forcefully plant the left foot. So is it correct to say when we want to hit a shot 70% that plant of the foot would be less forceful?
I seem to have a natural drop or loop in my arms at the beginning of the down swing that seems to follow the "bounce catch." It seems that my downswing is on a lower plane than my backswing. It would be the same action if I were trying to skip stones. I recall reading something about this arm drop incorporating a wrist flex (not cupping). Would you please comment on this drop/looping arm motion just after the "bounce-catch?" Luv your work - How about an annual "state-of-the art" video?
It's important to remember that the arms only move up and down the chest during the swing. There is a natural falling of the arms into the downswing, the only issue would be if the body fails to get out of the way and a crash of the arms into the ribcage occurred. Just work on being aware of getting out of the way of momentum in both directions, gravity will take care of the arms for you. Hope that helps.

Shawn, just a quick thanx. I have your Dvd and have watched all (well nearly all) the youtube videos. I think you are probably the best teacher out there for communicating in this way. Im improving a lot working through your stuff and I enjoy your videos a lot. At the mo Im working on this weight transfer quat-I find it tough to not let it drag my club off plane-but hey, Ill get it. Im gonna do the feet together drill and power sequence until I got it!!!
One video I just uploaded will really help; it is the "golf pro lesson rhythm" which will give you all the time in the world to get yourself braced against the left side before you swing the arms through; Shawn
I definitely now have the feeling of going to the RIGHT on the downswing. And now I think I understand why BEN HOGAN concentrated on having his RIGHT KNEE move TOWARD the ball, that basically is the same feeling as going RIGHT?...Do you agree? Thanks so much for all this fantastic instruction, I have turned a lot of my friends on to you!
I am getting more comfortable with the tilting, but i feel like i am moving alot.I really am cosidering my feet never used to move. What do you think about Charles Barkley, and could you fix him?Did you know on some of your distant filmed videos you almost look like Will Ferrel,ha
Thanks for the comment! You want to master the feet together drill and the One Leg swing; both are you tube videos and on my dvd so very important; Charles could use the same drills for support (He collapses on his left knee and cannot compensate for the out of balance condition...too severe to save and this is why he hesitates...BECAUSE HE IS OUT OF BALANCE!) combined with the "perpetual motion drill" and that is it! I do get the Will Ferrel sometimes...:) All the best! Shawn
Hi Shawn, I am pretty much on board with your way of doing things. One thing...I have a swing fault that results in fade (most pronounced with Driver) where I think I am losing posture (and standing up through follow through). What drills should I look at? Ball below the feet? I have your DVD set so you can refer me to something in there if required...
Hi Shawn, Great videos. One question though. Why shift the weight to the right leg then back to the left when the left leg could be a solid pivot from the beginning? Keeping you weight on the inside of the left side through the entire swing. Much like the one leg drill.
Not as much momentum available for the contact with the ball. Shifting your entire boy weight even a little bit helps a lot to add to that momentum coming forward.
When the feet are in the traditional position, the centre of gravity of the body will naturally cause the weight to shift inside the right side in the backswing only to shift back to the inside of the left before the backswing completes itself; this is due to the arm swing...if you were on one leg like the one leg swing no weightshift video, the centre of gravity is very different and allows you to swing without shifting any weight...Thanks for the comment! Shawn
H i i have been studying your you tube videos for 2 mo, I have sopped using the stack and tilt method. i think your a great teacher ,but i am having problems ,with the back swing,is the weight on the left foot or right.I dont see any one tilting their head to the right ,but im trying ,you really hit the ball so solid.I have told my golf buddies about your videos.
See the following videos: "Golf Pro Lesson Proper weight shift"; "Golf Pro Lesson "Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 and you will enjoy the "Golf Pro Lesson Learn Your golf machine" which will help you truly visualize how the body will work during the swing; Shawn
Outstanding comprehensive summary of your video series. I can't beleive how well you can recall the title of individual videos as well as their content. You can really tell that golf is not just a game to you, it's part of you. I'm looking forward to the 2009 season. The DVD is great! Thank you.
Greetings from the great links of Ayrshire.Been playing for 3 years now,got down to 20 very quickly then bounced of a wall.Lessons and more lessons was just about to give up on this beutifull game. Then i discovered the simplistic but oh so effective teachings of yours. REVELATION," toss and fall ", "stacked and balance" "give it to gravity" "Dont try and maipulate the swing" How much i was trying to manipulate the swing was tying in me in knots. Swinging in sync now Shawn. THANK YOU
Thanks for the great comment! You said a lot of magic words in there! You were very ripe for the information and this is why it registered so well! It is often a good thing to suffer a bit to appreciate the good stuff more! :)
I shot a personal best the other day of 87 (not too good I know haha....still, I started 15 months ago at 125, so a 38 shot improvement that had a lot to do with your dvd and you-tube vidoes here!) Are there any typical mistakes you see golfers make as they work their way down and try to break 80?
Yes! Short Game Short Game Short Game and STAY IN THE PRESENT MOMENT! I am just about to get the "inner Game of Tennis-Playing the game" which was recommended to me by a highly respected money player; Author is Timothy Gallway...
Shawn, knew your way was for me as it prevents my sway to the right and solves my problem of getting the hands in front of the club head. After 3 days of studying your videos, went to the range today and by the end was hitting 7 iron 150 yards dead straight, 3 times out of 4. Progress! More I stuck my butt left and back on downsing the better I hit it. Driver needs more work but 3 wood was promising. Was taking huge divots at first but got better over the hour. Just bought your DVD. Cheers John.
Shawn, thanks for all of your video's. Just started playing golf with my father-in-law. The first 3 or 4 times we played, I felt as though I would never be good at golf. I have always loved watching golf, but thought that I just didn't have the talent for it. Then, I started watching your video's and practicing. I can go on the course now and feel like I really am playing golf. Thank you so much!
Shawn, Thanks for the great videos. What do you think of the Stack and Tilt revolution? Wouldn't you say it's similar to the one legged drill? Do you recommend it and if so can you give some pointers on how to do it?
Thank you for all of your youtube videos you gave us this year additional to your DVDs!
By this competent base we enjoy working on the driving range as much or more than playing on the fairway. Knowing what and how to train is a tremendous help. By your lessons we can work on our swing by ourselves, not depending on other golf teachers who often may have a good swing but cannot teach it.
A good NEW YEAR 2009, keep your joy in helping people to learn golf!
Thanks Shawn, brilliant as always. Anyone who watches your videos should feel guilty if they do not buy your DVD! :) Your teaching method has always been fantastic, but it is actually getting better with each vid. (so is my game!) Thank you!
Thanks, Shawn. I bought the dvd and love it. I like the "bounce, catch" idea in this video. I have a problem that when I "brace the left side," I tend to brace on the outside edge of my left foot. At impact when I really go after it, the big toe side of my foot is off the ground and I am on the small toe edge of the foot like an ice skate. I watched your foot leg video, but I can't seem to fix it. Any suggestions?
Another great video from YouTube's no.1 golf instructor. (can't say I'm surprised any longer) Thank you for a great golf year. Look forward watching your stuff next year.
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
The DVD is completely different content, but completely consistent with his YouTube videos in spirit and philosophy. I am sure you will find it worth the investment.
Thanks Shawn for all your good work. I did purchase your dvd and it is great. I live in Burlington and I will try to go and see you next year just to meet and say Hi!
Happy hols Shawn & thanks for a fantastic summing up. Your tilted spine technique is the 'eureka moment' of the golf swing! You surely must go down in golfing teaching history as the most innovative teacher of the complexities of the golf swing. In my humble opinion, no-one has come close to your simplicity & the clarity of explanation of the full golf swing. Thank you ever so much, you have transformed my ball striking. You are my golf 'Guru'. Have a blast this festive period & many thanks!
When I swing hard at ball I have a tendency to use arms and forget to turn hips. My swing is coming around though and hope to have a good next year. Thanks for your help and maybe someday I'll come get some lessons up there. Happy Holidays P.S. Shawn you forgot Qwansa.
Another good video Shawn. Hey, what is your opinion of Hogan's back and forth drill from 5 Lessons? He holds the arms into the body. Does this drill hold value with your swing approach?
Hey dsilva! I will be in Stuart Florida as part of my Holiday from January 1 to January
7th but that is about it for right now; I stay busy year round at my facility and have ridiculous waiting lists April through September...suits family life too! But if you get a couple of days booked with a few of your friends that would cover $1500.00 plus expenses per day, I could send either my #1 guy Paul Davies or see about coming myself for about $2500.00 per day; Thanks for the comment! Shawn
