I can tell you for an example Malta I am not so much for immigreation. Any place outside Africa that is inhabited by humans has had one set of humans encroach upon another set of humans at some point in history, with likely very few exceptions. Even the "natives" of the Americas aren't necessarily the "natives". It has been shown that there were multiple waves of migrations to the Americas throughout history. Perhaps they feel that it's the old "They took our jobs" thing. IMO, if education were made more affordable, existing citizens would be at least employed, if not in their "ideal" jobs. I've had to take lower wages than expected, just to get back to work after long unemployment.
