Total class. To me, the main difference between Magic/Bird and so many players today was that those two played for the love of the game first, the fame and money were great, but it came in second place and it stayed there.
Typical that LA sports writer mentions Earvin grew up in East Lansing, perhaps thinking that East Lansing and Lansing are interchangeable. At least the documentay narrator is correct. Magic was raised in Lansing and Everett High School is on the city's south side. Michigan State University is located in East Lansing, a separate city bordering Lansing.
Magic and Bird were so important because they were both polar opposites. Larry was a blue-collar, hard-worker who scrapped on the court and appealed to the white audience. Magic was a confident, flashy, court-wizard who appealed to the black audience. They were bitter rivals, hated by some, but respected by all.
Magic and Larry saved the NBA, and passed the torch onto the next generation. Jordan carried that torch and with it a great responsibility, to outdo the previous generation. In my opinion that torch is now carried by Kobe Bryant, Whose Next?
@Guitarherotimmydude Dude, Magic had Kareem......arguably the Best player ever. Bird had good team mates but he had to go up against two of the top ten players of all time. The Lakers were a better team than the Celtics but Bird was the better player than Magic.
@Flipper79able first of all although they may seem similar in style, they have different games. If you're talking shooting, bird is better, if you're talking about passing/assists, magic is better, rebounding bird is better, steals magic is better....able to dominate at pivotal times and make the team elevate their game...they are equal. They are pretty much the same player but with different styles....
@MrJtotheohnnn yea exactly. which is why their "unlikely" friendship really wasn't unlikely at all......even though they were rivals they respected each others greatness and knew that they were the only ones playing at the level they were. Real recognize real!
@letsride84 ummm you do know that when I mean passing, I mean getting your team involved and assists right? You can't determine who "passed" better simply on the word definition but being able to recognize the floor and generally taking over games without having to score a lot. Magic =11.2 and Bird=6.3
@letsride84 because any basketball fan knows wtf "passing" means and knows that Magic dished out 11.2 assists per game to Bird's 6.3.....same style of play but Magic is a better passer and disher....we're done now
People say Kobe dont pass the ball based on his assist stats. but the only way you can get an ASSIST is when your teammate you passed to ACTUALLY makes the shot.
Oh man was this a great documentary! It took me back to an era of sports that started modern day sports. I wish we had this type of athlete today. The last to do it the "right" way was Jordan. Magic and Bird saved the NBA!
These guys have so much class and integrity. Sometimes i feel like that is missing in today's NBA. These guys along with Jordan and the players of that time period will be the golden age for me in a way. Not to say i don't love the players and game of today also.
Magic and Legend represent the NBA when its was great and at its highest level. And was about basketball and winning championships. And when the NBA Game of the Week was a big deal.
These two ushered in a new era which made passing not only effective, but cool. The reason the NBA got popular, before even Jordan was in the game and elevated it that is.
@DrmrGuy1979 Yeah, right now the Lakers are either a team you love, or a team you love to hate. Same thing with the Heat. I don't like the Celtics, but I respect and love how they play because they know how to play the game TOGETHER.
I WILL NEVER, EVER FORGET THAT '79 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP! as a 10 1/2yr old kid, i watched EVERY second of that game(including timeouts). NBC carried that game and the theme song for that final four was, "This is it".
Sick. so bird and magic did play together when they were not old like in the 92 olympics. sick how bird and magic would just own that 79 olympics team.
this was history in the making!!
