It creeped me out at the time that this song could be so on the mark about me except I did not have a famous rock star trying to rescue me. It was just a coincidence with the song. And I am not on Facebook Thank God!
@LaserBeam002 By the sound of it she's lived a pretty rough life. Married three times, the last (current?) one was (is?) abusive, her youngest (of six) says he hates his dad's guts because of his abuse...I think she's had a hard time of it. When I last saw her, in January of 1978, her last statement to me sounded almost like a cry for help. Can't help but wonder what might have happened if I had answered that cry...
Thirty five years later this song STILL reminds me of an old girlfriend. Last time I saw her she was spaced out of her mind, giving me some weed to make up for what I had gotten from her six months earlier that was about 1/8 oz. short...the last thing she said to me was to give me her phone number but asked me never to call because her boyfriend would get mad.
I read about the top 20 songs written about real people and listened to this one and I'm so glad I did. It's sad that my mom doesn't even know who Al Stewart is and I'm fifteen and I'm in love with this song.
It is the most impressed one for me! I' sure that Al Stewart is one of the greatest musicians! I've just rememterd those days to listen to this song ! I'm very thankful for the user who has made this song up on the YouTube!
This was done 10 months before Carol was released. Is it just me, or is Al a closet Rubettes fan? That high part sounds a lot like the guitar refrain, here!
I'm in mortal fear, at the possibilities of someone doing a Carol/Sugar Baby Love medley...
@tttar Very unfamiliar w/ Rubettes and their tunes, but I checked and oh my you make a good point :)! But then, sounds like Rubettes borrowed something from Diamond's Little Darlin'...nothin' new under the sun...Anyway, thanks, that was a fun discovery. (But why should *you* be in mortal fear, ha ;). Also, virtuoso guitarist Renwick may have been the Rubettes fan. Al has always had plenty of adjunct input/involvement (at least apart from lyrics) in the studio laying down the tracks.
@tttar Oh, ha! :) I was thinking you meant there could be a plagarism lawsuit (a bit late for that, anyway!) I saw that one (Osborne sketch) before and it's really funny; fun to be reminded of it again.
@cherimelodie I wasn't thinking about that, but you get it now. :)
Speaking of plagiarism though, wasn't this just the silliest thing. They first wanted something like 65% of the royalties, but finally got 5%. They should have been denied for even asking for such a ridiculous number:
@tttar (sorry for delay) I checked the comparison, and someone else said it much better than I could so here it is(too late, I know): Oh crikey hell they don't even sound the same at all! OMG this is complete BS! I sure hope somebody gets an ass whoopin' over this. Men At Work are the bomb and don't deserve this! I hope Kookaburra gets a serious beatdown for this and the old gum tree gets chopped down and turned into firewood! Hell yeah mates! LMAO
and took a cocaine holiday...not a bad idea..!!

Another gem from Modern Times! Love it! Stewart is a better lyricist then Bernie Taupin, IMHO. Thanks for posting.

Al must one day get the recognition he deserves as one of Britain's best ever musician/song writer.
