  • Wonderful song.

  • Realy beautiful song

  • Roberta flack was flying on a plane from LA to NYC one day, and she happened to hear this song (originally recorded by Lori Lieberman) on the in-flight music program. She listened to it a few times, jotted down the music and the lyrics, and almost immediately after landing, called her producer (Quincy Jones, no less) and asked to see Charles Fox about covering the song. Two days later, she had the music. The rest is history.

  • Wow... some of you guys are way off on the back story of this song. Lori Lieberman co-wrote this song with a guy called Norman Gimbel. Gimbel used to chill with Lalo Schiffrin (The guy who wrote the Mission: Impossible theme) who one day handed Gimbel a novel in which one of the characters is sitting at a piano bar, listening to the pianist "kill [him] softly with his blues." Lori started the song as a poem about her reaction to "Empty Chairs" By Don Maclean, Later Charles Fox set it to music.

  • Remember in About a Boy when the kid sang this at the talent show and all his peers started laughing at him? Total bullshit.

  • actually it is don mcclean's song empty chairs not american pie but still.

  • People...This Song is about the first time Roberta Flack heard the song and IMEDIATLY went to write this song in about 2 hrs! TRUTH!!! there was a war going on at the time

  • no doubt this was written about Don McClean and the song AMERICAN PIE..

  • @HawgtiedXX Actually, I think it's about James Taylor.

  • This is sooooooo sad and lovely

  • She's singing about James Taylor. Apparently.

  • @2sick2care No, she is singing about Don McClean and his song American Pie. She was so taken by the song she heard at his concert. What a beautiful reply!

  • 2 words..... Beautiful song ! End of story.

  • Not one studio revision of her voice or the notes she can sing.... Truly a pure artist....

  • @MississippiMelissa Wow...really? A rare and glorious gift

  • Me encanta esta versión de esta canción, es la mejor, Roberta es una excelente cantante

  • On this date in 1973 {Feb. 24th}; "Killing Me Softly With His Song" reached #1 {for 5 weeks} on the Billboard's Top Hot 100 chart...

    Ranked 3rd on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1973 chart...

Original version was by Lori Lieberman in 1971...

Won the 1974 Grammy for "Record of the Year"...

Was #1 for 4 weeks then was bumped by "Love Train" by the Ojays, but then regained top spot for one week...

Featured in the 2002 movie "About A Boy"...

  • Killing in the name of! Oh, wrong song ...

  • I really do like Roberta's music and her as a person. She is a true lady and legend.

  • I usually dont listen to slow music but this is officially my 1 one song :)

  • Chainsawc45. If I'm not mistaken, this is about her going to a Don Maclean gig and being inspired by the performance to write this classic.

  • @jaquijaq1 Yes, you are right.

  • OK, call me old, but I am a musician that grew up back in the day. Real musicians, real vocals, no looping, no pitch correction, no fluff... Just the real thing. That's what the industry brought to us back then. This is just another example of what the norm was back them. Superb!

  • @tomsielaff Amen!

  • Well I shouldn't say the reason for the song is great but you know what I mean

  • Without looking it up online, can any of you haters actually tell Me what the song is about or who? Haha. I didn't think so. Great song and story behind it.

  • This is one of my favorite songs. Thx :)

  • this song is delicious

  • this song is referring to Don Mclean

  • Performing this song soon(:

  • it should be a crime to dislike this song. at least 3 days in jail.

  • @WintersWar A week in jail for disliking Roberta Flack!

  • رااااااااااااااائع

  • I thought robert affleck was a bloke?

  • So, so awesome, wow!!!

  • @Filthboxable I totally agree with you.

  • Comment removed

  • Just don't understand what kind of a person can dislike this. No matter if you don't listen this kind of music, no matter if you don't like woman vocal or anything else...its just not a thing to be disliked.

  • @Filthboxable I agree with you!

  • @Filthboxable no disrespect to whitney but Carly Simon Roberta and the women of our youth were every bit as spectacular and more.

  • @Filthboxable I am with you on that issue.

  • @Filthboxable

Are you serious? Those are two perfectly good reasons to not like this song, rofl. I think it's a good song but don't act like it's the greatest thing to ever happen to the planet. Everyone has their own opinions and tastes.

  • @Filthboxable I agree...I worry about that kind of response. Maybe it's just trolls

  • @Filthboxable maybe heavy metal kids :D

  • Just had Roberta Black at the Gunnery talking and singing! Listened to a few of her new unreleased songs!

  • she wrote it for me and my Love :(

  • The blues Brothers were right,

They were and did destroy Motown music...

  • i love the story behind this song

  • Roberta Flack and Lauryn Hill sound so similar, but I prefer Roberta, although I also a huge fan of Lauryn.

  • this is the most heart filled song ive ever heard. Adele can go fuck off this is whats important

  • still listening in 2012 :D

  • @yovnskippers123 It still sounds great!!!

  • Thank You, Roberta. This is, and will always be, one of the greatest ballads ever. Today is Valentines Day and I hope my love reflects these words in the heart of my beautiful wife.

  • It's sad the cover of this has more views than the original... but I love both anyway.

  • we are singing that song at school in our music lessons and it is always great fun :) i live that song!

  • Beautiful song!

  • shat lavna

  • we love this song song so much.... :))

  • 1 of the best songs ever written. i love this. sing it, roberta....

  • RobertaFrackという方が歌ってたんですね。cafeeを飲む度に、赤い珈琲カップと、この歌を、思い出します。

  • why would someone hate this song? Must be an error or clinical issues!

  • It was composed by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel drawing from a poem written by Lori Lieberman after she saw a Don McLean concert. But nobody did the song better than Roberta.

  • wow! without words*_*

  • My listening is more Stones,Zepellin,Hendrix.Young Thin Lizzy etc. This song and voice i have enjoyed since Day 1. Pure Top Shelf

  • Wow... how could you not know who lauryn hill is???

  • one of the most amazing songs ever.. no one else can top this song.

  • Yo estudiaba 4º de la carrera cuando esta maravillosa canción sonaba en todas las máquinas de discos de los bares de la ciudad. Es de otro mundo, es preciosa.

  • I actually sang this song in a Talent Show......wow...always wonderful to hear her sing this song...

  • This song was number 1, the year I was born.

  • amazing

  • Someone needs to do a cover of this, but singing about the internet instead, regarding ACTA and SOPA/PIPA: "Killing me softly with their laws, with their laws...."

  • This song makes me want to kill myself.

  • 51 people will burn in hell

  • This is my mum and dad song, sending to Jackie and John, love you both x

  • 51 people were killed brutally

  • 51 people suck dick

  • Gorgeous!

  • This song is my life as a kid I didnt get it I thought somebody was actually getting killed. now I get it and I love it 3

  • At 1:25 when her voice breaks on the word ''his' sends the chills right through me. Im only familiar with RF version and remember when it was on the top 40. These old tunes are starting to come back to me again - had great melodies which are severely lacking in a lot of todays pop music.

  • I don't care that this song is 23 years older than me...I still think it's amazing!!! :D

  • I love it is only Roberta could put the feelings that the song deserved

  • Roberta Flack è una leggenda!!!! Roberta Flack is a legend!

  • yo i luv this song

even tho its mad old its still god :)

  • @nana1212345 I love it too..takes me out of many a rut i find myself in.

  • im still saying who the fuck is lauren hill?

  • @gomerpyleism you sir are an idiot

  • AND REAL TIME IS JUST A JOKE,

TO THOSE WHOSE INTERNET IS CENSORED,

BY FEMALE LESBIANS AND FEMALE PEDOPHILES.......

BY FEMALES WHO LOVE LOGS AND TURTULES IN THIER CUNTS......

    THESE THINGS ARE NOT HUMAN.....

    KILL THEM

  • TO THOSE WHO WANT TO PUSH THE INTERNET,

    SHOULD SUPPORT AND HELP FINANCIALLY,

THOSE WHO HAVE IT AND HAVE TO PAY THROUGH THE NOSE JUST

    TO HAVE REAL TIME.......

  • love this song......

  • love this. Fugees is good too except for the "yo" rap stuff the male background voices keep chanting- that ruins it.

  • Proper music . . that lasts forever

  • @marlonking1000 =yup

  • This is just unbelievable.

  • this song reminds me movie "About a boy" great song, and movie...

  • I saw Roberta back in 1976 At the National Arts Centre, Ottawa. When she sang this song you could hear a pin drop. It was almost like people held their breath.

  • Very great Number !!

  • I am American but live in France. I heard this song on a bus and broke out singing along with it. No one minded and I love the song and her interpretation. Uprated and shared. (I used to do session work in recordings and don't have a bad voice. But I don't bite off more than I can chew, hee hee!)

  • @CuteCatFaith . Love it too

  • @tess1312 Outstanding artist, production and material on this one. That was kind of a kooky thing, singing aloud like that, but I live in a mixed ghetto community outside Paris and they tend to be pretty open and tolerant. The rest of this country generally has a frigid pole up it's ... um ... posterior.

  • I auditioned for a choir solo and used this song....I hope it worked!!

  • This song seems to come through her voice so naturally.

  • This is awesome!

  • This stops me in my tracks..:)

  • A Masterpiece

  • hamma lied

  • @swissbernie7856- are you serious? if thats true, i certainly did'nt know

  • beautiful...:-)

  • You cannot name one modern singer with a voice as great as this!!! Perfect! Flawless!!!

  • OMG!!! I've been singing "strumming my FACE with his fingers" for 40 years! I hate when that happens...thanks for the song and most especially for the lyrics. Great singer, great song.

  • 7000 ;)

  • One of the best songs of this era

  • Wow I never knew this was a song from the 70's. I like this version better :)

  • What a great song!

  • Killing me softly with his (chain) saw? Don't get me wrong, I still find this song amazing and evokes many good memories as my b/f used to sing this one many times,. for me. And he can't sing. So, he'd killed me often. But, don't worry there's life after death.

  • I HAD NO IDEA THIS VERSION EXISTED

but its sooo much better than any of the others (read: fugees) than i've heard

    WOWWWWW

  • Fabulous rendition, but it is too quiet on this upload

  • muy buena canción

  • Nice easy-going music from a time the ninety seventies, which was a decade that had a myriad choice which included of course disco rock and popular songs of the times

  • @KREEPNASTY1

    @bluemonolith88

At the end of the day, the person that Lauryn Hill, Roberta Flack, and the publishing rights owners need to thank is Lori Lieberman for originally writing the song.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 You're free to type whatever you want in however manner you want. I was just pointing out that your comment implied something that was factually incorrect. You just seem to have very hard time when people point out you got something factually wrong. Whatever, dude.

  • What does tone deaf mean anyway,

    a love of Hip Hop?

    an ability to understand Rap??

  • 45 dislikes? Whatever tone deaf fools

  • Lauren Hill should call Roberta Flack every morning and thank her for giving the permission to cover this song, Because if she hadn't, We'd all be saying, "Who's Lauren Hill"?

  • @KREEPNASTY1 AMEN.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 i doubt roberta flack owns that song. if Hill needs to thank anybody for that song, she probably would have to thank the actual owner of that song, which probably is a record company.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 you're right, who is Lauren Hill? Lauryn Hill is a pretty badass singer...

  • @KREEPNASTY1 Who's Lauren Hill?

  • @Breveglieri LOL..I was waiting fot that.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 that was like a totally, cool, fun, clever and witty comment you came up with or something like that, like totally =)

  • @Valtteri2 LOL

  • @KREEPNASTY1 your an idiot both of them should call Lori Lieberman the true og of this song!

  • @KREEPNASTY1

No one can be compared with Roberta, this song will allways be her cup of tea. Forever!

  • @paramusica3

    Lori Liebermann

  • @paramusica3 .SO much agree!

  • @paramusica3 =you is 100%right.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 ... Who's Lauren Hill?

  • @KREEPNASTY1 Nah stop jumping on the bandwagon they are both amazing

  • @KREEPNASTY1 who is lauren hill? is she related to lauryn hill?

  • @KREEPNASTY1 also. it wasn't flack's permission to be given. she didn't write the song. nor did she own the rights to it. she wasn't even the first to perform the song.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 Who's Lauren Hill??

  • No, moi drodzy krajanie, chyba pora przejąć ten filmik :D

  • @onlyemptiness Czyim wykonaniu ?

  • This brings up the memories. You're in your friend's house, it is a summer night and the clock is three. You just sit down and listen this quietly from the radio that is in the next room. Those moments - they are something that you can not be without.

  • This song was first offered to Barbra Striesand who turned it down, saying it would never be a hit! I am so glad Barbra did that! Roberta---WOW!

  • chciałam tylko napisać, że piosenka ta pojawi się w pierwszym lub drugim odcinku z kastingów w drugiej polskiej edycji programu X-Factor w przegenialnym wykonaniu!

  • I JUST LOVE THIS SONG.

  • So love this song. It reminds me of my youth oh so many years ago. Sad yet Beautiful this song is definately a sweet one. :)

  • Its funny how a song can remind you where you were the very first time you heard it. In my case i was on a TWA flight to Egypt I was 13 back then. :)
