The finest track of his finest album... such melancholie yet hopefull... And Hokusai, another favorite of mine together with Hiroshige... Japan and Jazz... Brubeck understood it very well!
Words seem meaningless in the aftermath of the recent catastrophic events in Japan. This morning, I decided to come here and find some of Brubeck's musical "comments"/observations on Japan. Sure enough, the music seems to provide some assurance that Japan will eventually heal and endure. This was one of my favorite albums from the 60s, and it still provides so much richness and solace. Thank you, Dave Brubeck.
Got to find a copy of Brubeck's album, Impressions of Japan. There's supposed to be a a description by Brubeck of each of what inspired each of these compositions while he and his quartet were in Japan. Think about Mt. Fuji while listening to this and you can get a sense of it. It's like the song is describing the slow passage of time, describing something constant, something that's been there forever.
This is easily one of the most beautiful compositions ever produced. The sax is crying. Listen and think of times past, lovers gone, and regress, if only for a bit, to a simpler time in your mind.
One of Brubeck's best. I first got it as a used vinyl, and played it many, many times...30 years ago. Still enjoy listening to this piece on any media. Thanks for the upload.
Как же я люблю этот чистый, неподражаемый Desmond tone! Как нам повезло, что они(Dave and Paul) встретились! Чудное ухо Дейва так хорошо восприняло японскую музыку(и не только!). Одна " Koto Song" чего стоит,,,
Dave's compositions. I've performed this myself at many concerts taking much pride in the beautiful simplicity of it's creation. Forever grateful Brubeck. Owen Novenski
anybody got the music sheet for this ?

So sad a comment on the latest 3 diasters in Japan. God bless Japan and let´s help the people there with food and supplies in any kind.

This is the power of music as moving as this.

that cello just an inch louder would have been so much more over powering, what a phenomenal piece none the less.

it's nothing less than shocking - grand music, superb pictures from the Master Hokusai and less than 100 thumbs up from 13 odd thousand views?!

And I should mention (omitted in previous post), your presentation of Hokusai's depictions are wonderful.

do you know the changes for the head? and or where I can find the music or should I just try to use my ear?
hockeyMVP4life 2 years ago
@northislandkiwi Sure it wasn't Desmond who wrote it? Sounds pretty sax oriented.
