As inspiring as the emperor's words are; the sad fact is, many countries all over the world are forgetting who they are (i.e. their culture, history and traditions.) Even Japan's now somewhat guilty in forgetting their old ways.
The beautiful Geisha are a rare sight, the samurai teaching have been forgotten and many of the country's beautiful temples have probably been plowed down due to the recent quake or the ever-growing cityscape. But that's me; please correct me (nicely,) if I'm wrong
it is true verry *sniff* :'( i will always love what japan has to offer but to become japanese u have to devote ur life so ur children are japanese... i love what the movie has shown...
Having watched the movie thousands of times and being my favorite of them all, you can just see it in Nathan's face all the time he spent with Katsumoto and his people and how much his life changed and how much he learned.. and all of it died just to make the emperor open his eyes to where they came from and honor it ..!
Wow i knew it would be those lines when i clicked on this for good reason; even though he is talking about Japan and their identity the words resonate with all and sink deeply into everyones heart.
@Elspethknighterrant well seeing as he started the Maji restoration which completly changed Japan he wasn't really, just the way he was portrayed in the film
@Fatboyswim123 No I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I am not saying Israeli's lives are worth more or less. I'm just saying based on the news we get here, you never hear about the injustices done to the Palestinian people. You only hear Israel's side of it. That's what I meant. Just that the powers that be always side with Israeli's so that's the only thing shown here.
if every nation had a leader like this, there would be no war. it's such a tragedy that so many young people have had to sacrifice their lives because leaders couldn't come to some sort of an agreement. My country, the USA, is guilty of this in the worst sense. We try to control everything. But nobody knows of it since it isn't publicized. An Israeli life is worth more than a Palestinian life. that's been shown time and time again. we are only a great nation if we lead by good example!
The speech was actually: " I have dreamed of a unified Japan, of a country strong and independent and modern. And now we have railroads, canals and western clothing. But we can not forget who we are, or where we come from."
just to point out it was japanese honour in which they could not surrender that was in one sense the cause of the atomic bombings. honour as an ideal is great there must be limits.
when tom cruise had to slit his samurais freind stomach, in which his frend asked him to take him to the cherry blosoms,, it brought back a chilling picture to my head, in which I died in that very spot too...
And stfu u ppl who dont believe in honor! nobody asked you! and philosophy proves honor
@sadlobster1 In my opinion some of the younger generations are forgetting the past. But that isn't to say the amount of people who still practice Kendo, Archery, other forms of martial arts in Japan that reflect with the way the Japanese were. Also, the ideology of having manners, being respectful, and dedication is I think embedded in the Japanese culture because of the past. It all depends on the person I guess.
Yeah, all the emperor of Japan needed was Tom Cruise to come and teach him about what it means to be Japanese. Entertaining movie, but otherwise insult to intelligence.
@dunjica77 ignorance is different to intellegence. With that much power some men have trouble making the right decisions. And can be easily mis lead as they hate the responsibility of a whole nations fate on their shoulders. Its human nature to not want to have that on you.
Right. The film is insult to intelligence, not insult to ignorance. The former means that any intelligent person would find the idea proposed in the scene an insult. The latter, well, makes no sense.
@TekBubs honor is an idea, and an ideal. If humans treated each other with it, then crime would no longer exist, genocide a word that would never had to be coined.
of course, there are different honor codes, and all are subject to interpretation, take a look at WWII, no nation involved avoided committing great acts of evil, Dresden, Nanking, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the holocaust, the list goes on and on. now if nations had honor, that could have been averted. That ideal is what the honorable want.

i love that scene but i wish you would have posted all of it when he tells Ambassador Swanbeck that his treaty isn't in the best inetrest of his people, offers that dude the sword and then ask Algren how he died and he says, "I will tell you how he lived." the whole scene all together in fantastic!!!
