I like it this new building is really going to add something to the East Village and to the City of Calgary. I am looking forward to walking through the real deal as well.
Why exactly ARE we saving the hotel? The important thing about the hotel is its clientele and past performers. It's a small pointless building sitting next to one of the most beautifully designed buildings in Canada. The space could be put to better use than the current plan, which I can only interpret as a high five to Ralph Klein
Also in the video it's clearly visible in the last 20 seconds on the bottom left of the screen.
@grahamkrenz Whats the point of any keeping any building with history? Why not tear down the Washington Monument, the Great Wall of China, or the Pyramids? Obviously the hotel isn't the same as these places, but the idea IS the same. Why tear down a piece of history when there is so much space all around that area to build on? Everyone in this city is so eager to tear down the few, old, historic buildings we have. I think its kind of a shame.
@Aspenly ... Finally some interesting architecture in Calgary not designed from local "conservative' firms ... Calgary has already lost a lot of buildings with historical values, I think keeping the King Eddy Hotel was a good move ... not sure about their renderings of the surrounding buildings though @ 2:22.
@grahamkrenz The musical history is only part of the historical significance of the King Eddy, it was one of the earliest hotels built in Calgary and can be seen in some of the earliest pictures that exist of this city. The musical history means more when the walls of the actual building that housed that music still exist and the continued existence of the building and its musical past combined with the function of the new building is simply awesome.
