  • If you want to do container gardening, start searching for home made self watering containers.

  • Hi, What is the recommended feeding schedule? Just water? I am a hydro man. Nobody (I have not read all the comments) seems to mention nutes? Just water? Really?

Great job! I am inspired to do something this summer, similar set up.

  • I just watched Jason's upside down garden video & he has an amazing garden! He said that strawberries never do well the first year! So, I hope you're having luck now! :))

  • Water water water. Thats it.

  • @Yewtoobnube...Looking at the upsidedown system my first concern would be to keep the roots somewhat cool by maybe wrapping the containers with some bubble wrap or something along those lines. Hanging like that in the summerheat without some protection would seem difficult for the rootsystem to thrive in, just my opinion.

  • @Yewtoobnube....I wasn't trying to sound like a know it all my friend, I am an old gardener/landscaper and I have an admiration for natures simplicity. People kill more plants with kindness by overwatering and over feeding. New methods are interesting, but millions of years of evolution has made plantlife pretty predictable if you don't love em to death:)

  • Put your plants in the ground, water goes down by way of gravity, the roots follow naturally, the roots stay cool in the ground and you have plenty of food, quite simple really...

  • @buckley1111 It may be simple, but I didn't want to grow them in the ground. The whole idea was to do a container garden, but thanx for watching and commenting.

  • I'm too lazy to read through the comments, but for tomatoes, you want to pick a plant with no fruit or flowers on it. Bury it very deep and leave about 2 sets of leaves sticking out of the dirt. Be sure to keep them from between those plastic flaps; they pinch. The tomato plant will develop roots along the stem buried in the soil and it will make a stronger plant. If you look at my video of my porch garden, the tomato I eat is small and the plant is puny because it had fruit when I planted it.

  • @LadyWeasel Now that the fruit is gone, I'm hoping it will grow more. I also water mine every day at least once and fertilize every so often.

  • @LadyWeasel THANX!!!

  • A locknload hanger works great with a topsy turvy on a wood deck.

  • I love the garden you've got going on there! I'm no expert but I've heard from an experienced gardener that putting a bit of Sand in the dirt is really good for strawberries. I have yet to start my own strawberry topsy-turvy but I'm excited to try the sand in the dirt. I hope you've had some luck with your berries, been 2 years I guess since you posted this but Good Luck anyway! = )

  • you should try to do a DIY hydroponic indoor grow. you might enjoy the results more

  • Why not double growing space and use the tops as well as the bottoms and sides?

  • What about putting less plants into the container.

  • I know its been two years, but I couldn't help but comment on the cucumbers and melons in the same pot. Did they grow well and did they cross pollinate? I grew pumpkins and watermelons too close one year and grew some weird hybrid of the two.

  • You should look into campanion planting. Search it on youtube. You can plant Basil on top of the tomato plant if its in the topsy turvy.

  • Thanks for sharing. How has the broccoli mean managing being close to chives? I am very new to gardening and recently came across information that suggests that aliums (like chives) are not companion plants.

  • I moved mine to partial afternoon shade and they all came back.

  • That is a good video. Have you tried growing ghost peppers?

  • @nursedemons That's on my list for next year! Thanx for the compliment.

  • @Yewtoobnube - btw ghost chili aren't the hottest peppers anymore.

theres a new one, which replaced it in the record book "naga viper"

  • @OakleafRanger Well thanx for that tip. I may just have to search out some seeds for that one!

  • Hi! If the leaves are brown, the plant needs more water. If the leaves are yellow, you need to water less. You should remove the twigs and rocks from the soil. The roots can't deal with them. Good Luck! Jack

  • @BEEP338 Thanks for the advice!

  • Dude your strawberry plant is dying badly.Try using Miracle Grow Organic soil,or if you want Organic soil that holds more moisture then try Lambert,it's certified organic but it's doesn't have plant food in the soil, miracle grow does.

  • @Keepskatin Thanks for the tip. 2 years no luck w/ strawberries..I'll just buy mine @ Kroger. LOL

  • I planted jalapenos in the tomato planter. The results have been tremendous, far beyond what I imagined that they would be.

  • @DekeRadio Glad to hear it! I have had great success with all of the peppers. Do you plan to put up any videos?

  • The problem might be that your watering your strawberries too often.

You should water them in the morning every other day or every two days.

    That's what I would suggest

  • @lilchopin1 Thanks for the advice. Had no luck with em.

  • for soil I use a combination of peat moss and manure peat moss holds water better.and don't over fertilize but water water water good luck!!

  • @lkerley2006 Thanks!!

  • Have my topsy turvey auto watering system video up for you to view. Look up Topsy turvy auto watering system. thanks.

  • have topsys the tomatoe plants need lots of water. mine are producing nice red fruit. watering 3 times a day in 95 deg temps. what if you have to leave home. I made an automatic watering system for my two topsys i can leave home for 5 days without any worries about my plants. Im in the process now of showing topsy people how to make this simple auto water system. This will help all of you topsy planters. YOU should see my tomatoe plants you will be amazed. Built my system for under 20.00.

  • @petmycatwiththose That's awesome! Leaving is an issue, BUT we give our neighbors veggies so if we go away, they are happy to lend a hand in watering. Do you plan to put up a video describing your auto water system? If you do, holler at me so that I can check it out, ok??

  • @Yewtoobnube Back at you,i will be filming 2maro. you will be the first to know. Feel free to share my vid with whoever it will help. I subbed you, talk with you later. GOOD DAY.

  • i dont know yewtoobnube.... im thinking tomatoes need cages.. i have a topsy turvy video too and my plants are huge but ive had some problems with the tomatoe plants breaking already im thinking topsy turvys are better for plants which are not as large as tomatoe plants even though thats what there advertised for.... my topsy turvy peppers are doing excellent..... far as tomatoe plants go.. its buckets only for me now.. they need support from trellis

  • @partyongarth420 I went to all containers and tossed out the topsy turvy's this year. The plastic pots work better for me and are a whole lot cheaper at about $1.50 each.

  • pull off the dead leaves and strawberries. it might make the rest of the plant 'sick' and not grow anymore

  • @ArchiesAngel1228 Thanks. I have given up on the strawberries and when I have a craving, I head for the grocery store!

  • Hi, Strawberries are real drinkers. Try to mix soil with turf in order to keep moisture inside the container.

  • @iambrus Thanks for the comment but I've given up on strawberries. I now buy them from Krogers in the little clear plastic package!

  • i think strawberry's need hot sun,... i live in California where its 85 constantly in summer or more... and my strawberry's are going fast.. same with everything im growing..plenty of room per plant and proper watering and nutrients

  • i would like to let everyone know my idea...... my plants were getting long starting to flop over..... i had 1 tomatoe plant on the side. on top... it got big fast and flopped on downwads. so i tied them up to the top chains. with loose knots so it wont strangle it...now the plants are growing upwards and my guess is they will get stronger with the supper and also have a much easier time holding the tomatoes these plants here are way to low to the ground... tie them up

  • @partyongarth420 Thanks for the tips. Appreciate the idea.

  • I've done strawberries twice... the first time they were outside and they looked real bad. This year they are growing indoors, next to the patio door for sunlight, and they look great, so far. Im in Texas so the heat may have been my problem. I've also added the cheap "Jobe Plant Spikes" this year too. I started my strawberries in pots this year then inserted them after they started growing.

Thats just my 2 cents worth... and it may not be worth that much. :P

  • @xetlive it was definately worth commenting, thanks! i did horribly with them so i'm steering clear of them. i'll visit krogers and buy them when they are in season. best of luck to your strawberries!!

  • did you use strawberry bulbs? my mom got some and they arnt even sprouting :(

  • @fluffygal22 No, I bought the strawberry plants in a hanging planter basket and split them up and put them into the topsy turvy. Strawberries were a bust for me.

  • @Yewtoobnube Did you plant over the crown? Might want to watch some of the videos on planting in a strawberry pot and just apply it to the TT. Good luck.

  • @AnarchoFeminist Yeah, I'm not sure what that means, so I guess...no? LOL. I'll buy my strawberries @ the store from now on. Do you garden??

  • lots of water atleast twice a day Liquafeed from the gardening center

  • are you feeding your strawberries? I use super thrive and citrus or all purpose plant food.

  • @nettie0930 yeah, i had no luck with the strawberries.

  • Give them Brawndo, it's got what plants crave, it has electrolytes...

  • I went with petite orange bell and sweet banana peppers.. My jalapeños are budding an look quite promising. Thanks for the tips! Which region do you live in? I live on the east coast in MD so the heat and humidity help alot with growing

  • @kharv29fan Good luck!! I live in central Ohio.

  • Great video! im growing jalapenos and am thinkin bout startin a second one with either orange bell or cukes..which one do you think would do better? which home depot or lowes soils and fertilizer do u recommend? i say home depot and lowes because there are no true nurseries near my area

  • @kharv29fan We've had great luck with bells. the cukes didn't do as well upside down. for the soil, and i use Lowes to shop, I mix 1/3 Miracle Gro Garden Soil for Flowers and Veggies, 1/3 Miracle Gro Potting Mix w/ Moisture Control and 1/3 Bumpercrop. I sprinkle in a little blood meal and a little bone meal. Others may not agree with this, but we've had great success. If you do grow some stuff, let me know or post a video and let me know about it. I'd love to see your progress.

  • @Yewtoobnube How about pure potting mix (no garden soil)?

  • @pureinstinkt It might work. I'm not sure. I watched some other videos here before trying to start my container garden and took some pieces from several places. If you try it and it works, let me know, ok?

  • @Yewtoobnube I just put up my Tomato planter ..gardener at Home Depot said use only Potting mix , no ground garden soil whatsoever because it'll suffocate the roots. They had one on display there. It may also be that the many strawberry roots are competing for the same nutrients within the container, causing a shortage and death.

  • to get them huge im mean huge get good fertilizer or order dirt from alaska they are very vertile

  • pick the strawberries when they are biggest

  • @dperea57 gotcha

  • Hi there!! great video! This might be a stupid questions..but how do you install it.. I got one and I don't understand the instructions...do i just insert soil into the basket and from the outside install the strawberry plant? I've got this weird foam thing with slits in it..what do I do with those..according to the instructions I'm supposed to insert them with the strawberry plant..but they only gave me one..so lost.

  • @momojelly8 the foam is for the bottom hole so the soil doesn't fall out. hang the unit up. start filling it with soil from top.when you get to one of the holes on the sides, place a plant in on the hole on the side and continue filling with soil. i think the unit holds about a dozen plants. it was easier with my wife's help. i added the soil and she put the individual plants in. hope this helped and there's no such thing as a stupid question. Lemme know how you make out, ok?

  • Check out my video.....

    Topsy-Turvy tomato dog.

The plant grew to 8 feet long....had to prop broom stix in the air to keep them growing! First time using the Topsy-Turvey and can't wait until next year to do more because this year was better than we could have expected.

  • Add some epsom salts every week or two, acts as a complete fert and will boost overall growth and yield. Say 2 tbs per gallon. Also add unsulphered molasses at 2 tbs per gallon that will drive your produce to intake carbs at a much higher rate increasing overall growth and making it quite sweet. Don't use time release ferts. Superthrive works wonders. Based off of looking at your plants buy some transplants and start over, keep the soil light with perlite. Add some dolemite to the soil good luck

  • Hopefully the Moisture Control will work better. Not only does it help hold the water longer when it is hot is also helps to keep from over watering. Keep the updates coming!

  • Nice upside down plants. This is my first year gardening and I have an entire series dedicated to upside down containers. I'm new but there could be some tips in there for you. Check it out.

My strawberries started as transplants in ground containers and are now in a square foot bed. What type of soil are you using? I'm using Miracle Gro Moisture control and it is doing awesome.

You are right about once things start growing that they really take off. I'll be watching for updates!

  • Thanks for commenting! It is exciting to be in the YouTube community. The soil for my strawberries WAS Miracle Gro Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables BUT this evening I replanted them in a different container with Miracle Gro Moisture Contol (I know good advice when I read it). I'll be putting a new video on this weekend.

  • Im using the same soil and getting GREAT results. I never have to guss if its getting to all parts of the soil. Great advice!

  • @wheeliesforJesus - THANX!!! I'm glad to hear you were successful!
