Well, I feel kinda bad for these folks working in this factory. They will be assembling a poorly designed, over-priced piece of crap! I have a 2004 New Beetle convertible that has only 70,000 miles and just spent $4818.56 to get the transmission repaired. That's on top of a new water pump, alternator and three (3) out of the windows have collapsed into the doors and body, which cost a fortune to repair. There are other items such as switches and indicators that malfunction. Last VW for me.

@SCaitan Creating a factory in America = Good publicity and customer attraction with trust in helping pump the U.S economy through creating "German" vehicle in America which also creates jobs. Its by far a grand move on VW part. American auto industry is going to fall apart especially since foreign are more likely to create more jobs then the A. auto industry. Total take over, smart move.

I'd like to have a 2012 Passat or Beetle TDI. 40 to 50 mpg is nothing to sneeze at, and the "clean diesel" engines are great. They're the most reliable VW products. Quiet, powerful,clean, and very economical. Apparently not enough for amirfecher, though. He'd have us all packed in cans like sardines. No thanks. The tree-huggers can have my car when it's pried from my cold, dead hands...

Nice factory. Too bad the workforce starts out making about $14.00 an hour. The people building the new Passat can barely afford to buy the least expensive model they make. Still, I hope they build them better than my Puebla, Mexico-built 2006 Jetta GLI that didn't go 3 months without ending up in the shop for something major. Traded it after 2&1/2yrs & 44K miles and haven't looked back. The only VW models I would consider are the TDI diesels. Once bitten, twice shy..Shame, too.

@amirfecher I come from a country with a very good - excellent does not exist - public transport. Trains, busses, trams (we can even buy or tickets via a mobile phone), car and cycling hiring shemes, cycling paths etc. and people still use their car. Probably less than in certain countries but the car or bike is the only vehicle that can bring you everywhere. As soon as you are with more than one the car is getting more interesting.
