@watchandbamused just look up big leaguers warming up n watch all their mechanics..most take ball out with glove in front of chest/stomach..if you stay back and thumb to thigh, ball to sky you should be able to get on top with good velo n DH plain..imho
of keeping the top half closed and directional as long as possible, the seperation between your lower half and top half creates torque and is vital to throwing hard. hips have to open first, then the top half can be pulled through quicker
man, volquez generates some serious late power and velo. And as someone who has been pitching for a very long time i can tell you this guy for the most part really does know what he's talking about. no one can throw 94 with their arm, your body has to generate it and when the foot hits, thats when the energy has to be efficiently transfered to the arm. and the later you can do it, the more time you have to generate power. one thing this guy neglected to mention though is the importance
All the suggestions about taking a large stride, not leaning back, and holding the ball longer are great and will be sure to improve velocity and even control. The low elbow comment is very debatable, a low elbow may limit velocity(by a very small margin if at all) while significantly reducing stress on the arm. So, keeping your elbow high, an unnatural motion may give you an mph or so for what cost??? After one season Volquez needed Tommy John surgery.
@Frozen4pe you need as much body weight as possible in order to get max velocity... by keeping your weight back i mean not falling towards the plate because if that happens then you are pretty much throwing with nothing but your arm
@bigjohn1995 this guy knows EXACTLY what he's talking about.. It's subtle, but there is a difference. And if you are out of position at position #1, then #2, and #3 and everything else thereafter will be off too.
pretty painful to watch. terrible timing problem. midway through your stride your elbow was already at shoulder height. your arm is dead slow. way before you even landed your hips were already opening. you want your hips to open afer you land, and your shoulders open after your hips open. when you land think hips and staying back, not arm! the arm is the least of your worries. you have decent stride just stay closed and let some energy go up through your torso
im listening to a pro player bret wagner this is what i need to work on im 12 and throwing 65 mph he says i have great arm action but need more stride
you know your stuff! Nice to see there are pitching coaches out there that aren't retarted. The head coach at the high school I'm at believes in a short stride and using more arm/less legs with a hip rotation at the leg kick in order to generate power. As a pitching coach I told the kids that it was all wrong, but the guy is 60 and my boss. I think he found out what I said because now I'm coaching the freshmen team and he has a new guy (his ex- player) that teaches his style.
well actually he drags his back leg because of his long stride. I feel the same about the landing of the heel of the front foot. why do you feel that those are bad things?

it doesn't have to do with holding on to the ball longer.. it has to do with keeping your weight back and not falling forward

@phillyman34 why would you keep your wieght back when you have to pitch forward

leg mechanics are good, unfortunately you weren't blessed with any type of arm action

man keep your left arm straight and let it go back so you can twist your body and gain more velocity. point your glove toward the catcher.
