I've been playing wow for a about a year now and guess what I archived. I made new friends, had great experiences, & learned some job skills while selling stuff in the auction house. MMORPGs are about the experience and I got one.
So... I should feel sorry for the goldfarmers now? The very same goldfarmers that hack accounts day by day and make people go trough the stress of retrieving their stuff they have spent hours upon hours working for?
God, this coverage is so full of shit and so uninformed. They don't even have the grasp of basic psychology! They do not even understand that "fun" does not have to be productive.
The fact that this is considered journalism repulses me. This just cultivates dumb stereotypes.
You don't think those gold farmers also spent hours working towards their ends?
Don't understand fun doesn't have to be productive? I think the glasses guy w/ the blue screen in front of him knows it isn't really productive and implied so. It is only the people in the clinic, who deserved to be covered, that seemed to be concerned about the productivity. Many viewpoints were included, it was pretty fair all-around.
Oh yes, poor poor goldfarmers. I should really feel bad about their illegal activities.
To be put in clinic, you need a medical diagnosis. Funny thing is, video game addiction has none. It has no medical diagnosis. So... if it doesn't have one... how can you be put in clinic with it? How will they "cure" you? Dish you in Placebos for years, saying that it is the miracle cure, charging off every last penny of you, while actually they have no idea themselves?
Same, and those kids who died/ went into hospital, well my Mum would never have let me play any computer game that long, she'd rather have taken it away than let me play kinda 24/7
Colin McCauley here, the guy who was actually interviewed - I was in no way informed that this report was about "video game addiction". I was tipped off by a friend that a news story was being done on WoW but he couldn't be in town for it, so he sent me in his place.
Nerdy, yes. Presentable, very much so.
Addicted? Of course not. I've played off and on for the past four years.
haha. I don't really get addicted to things; play 'em once, forget 'em. But those guys who do.... Ouch. i suppose that's what happens when your life is boring.
I played wow for over 4 years. What have I achieved? Meeting people who think the same as me. I lacked alot of vocal confidence intill I started using ventrilo with WoW and I can now comfortabley speak down it. I havn't made any physical achivements but it has shaped my personality, has educated me about other countries and cultures and generally how to deal with people.
Yes it is true that you shouldn't let it take over your life, but it's only a small minority and they need help and not...
I love how these people have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Yes i play World of Warcraft but i will NEVER turn out like these losers, they make it seem like video games are just as bad as drugs and this "addiction" is just from lack of a social life
An addiction is classified as a chemical addiction. WOW is not a chemical. There is no "addiction" to WoW. WoW is a social game. It's a hobby. Is it considered dangerous when someone spends hours and hours building airplanes? No. WoW is the same thing.
If you wanna blame someone, blame the PARENTS for not taking control and not disciplining their kids.
As for Gold Farmers, Blizzard has a very strong stance against them.
Any story that portrays WoW in a bad light is retarded, perid end.
Recovery clinics for gaming? What a failure of an investment. I play WoW and whenever I have to get off I never have a problem doing it, and I've been playing for 3 years. Some people are just weak-minded.
You can get addicted to game's, and i play WoW but i can stop whenever, actually i havent played in about 4 weeks cause i never get around to it. But I know that playing a video game cant make a 5 year old pick up a pistol and kill his parents because he'll get a kill. Humans arnt that stupid....
World of Warcraft was not the first game which caused "unhealthy" addicted. People had the same problems with Eve online and Everquest the only reason WoW has become a problem is because so many people play it where as the other two had a relatively small fan base.
I'm not buying it. Read John M. Grohol's information on so-called "addictions" to technology. So if I sit in a room all day reading books I'm a book addict? Please. As Grohol contends, these people are "addicted" to these things for other underlying reasons, such as escapism from some real-world problem. Pinning it on the technology ignores the underlying problem.
I think you didn`t get it right. I am only against games which are manipulating. The crucial thing is that people are not aware which specific games influences their brain and behavior in a manipulative manner. Thus they can`t decide on a conscious level if the game is okay or not. This kind of games must be forbidden.
Are you of the same problem? No. Was I a WoW player? Yes. Why am I not playing? Cause I have importance in my life and lack the stupidity required to be a 'victim'.
Human is a manipulative creature in general. Every day, you manipulate with others in one way or another. How can you be against "manipulative" games, if you do the same every day, huh? Bit hypocritical, don't you think?
Blaming the game is not the solution. Looking into yourself and finding the answers within your own psychology is. Get this pseudo-scientifical nonsense out of here.
can you see it already? Congress passes a law in the US making it illegal to play online games...then hotpockets...soda...hell why not make everything thats bad for you illegal. Cigarettes, Red meat, all that stuff. We can have a society just like the movie "Demolition man" Wouldnt that be fun?

Is it just me or did this video end up making WOW look cooler with all the screen shots/ videos, and how they talk about how many people play?

When did compulsion become addiction?

Perhaps around the same time people became lazy?

If you lose your social life and/or all your friends because you play WoW (or any other game) you've got a problem.
Personally, I've been playing WoW for 3 years (not straight), I have a social life, I have hobbies, I have friends.
So all I'm saying is that WoW -isn't- an "addiction" as long as the players don't let it become one.

The problem with the games is that they set a behavior due to altered cerebral compounds. Games with manipulative potential should be banned .
