@Paragon9000 Not every movie needs a token (insert politically correct flavor of the month). Not every whitebread listens only to music on an approved whitebread list. We have a (semi) black man in the white house. Playing the race card is getting old and tired.
@Paragon9000 well that was the brilliance of Motown, it broke down barriers. Berry Gordy often spoke about how his label didn't produce "black music" just music, and amazing music at that. Even some of the Funk Brothers were white. All i'm saying is i LOVE Motown, and i'm half-Mexican half-Italian... just something about that music, it affects people on a human level, where the color of skin doesn't even really matter in the end.
To really understand this movie, you needed to be young during the 60s. Pure and simple.
That said, I can't count the number of twentysomethings that rave about this film, even now. It really is a subtle, personal movie, and yet there are young people now who get it. That's a miracle.
@Glencanon4au This film is universal. It's about the value of friendship. That's why it lasts the test of time. We all have those friends who when we're reunited with, we revert back to our true selves and become honest and the best of ourselves is revealed. Kazdan really captures that in this film and that's why it works to bloody well and will work in 100 years.
@Glencanon4au What? No. There is no specific time period to understand this film. I don't need to be in Middle Earth to fully comprehend Lord of the Rings nor need I be a veteran to understand the implications of a Vietnam War movie. Film is Art, and art can transcend all boundaries of space and time. One can be completely capable of understanding this film even if they didn't grow up in the 60s. Pretentious douche.
@jlsmsu12 i'm neither of those...well except whiney(only when im with my girlfriend) and i love this flick..not that i want to be like the people in it...but jeff golblum was pretty damn funny in it

I must say Glenn Close was extremely generous, letting her friend have sex with her husband for a baby. That part was a trip.
