Nice video. I just picked up a really nice 1980 Oday 22 yesterday. I have not sailed her yet but she is a real beauty. Although I had motor boats off and on all my life, I am completely new to sailing so I have to take it easy the first few times out. Hopefully I will be putting up some nice videos too.
@warspite2 Good luck with the boat... you really can't go wrong with this design. The only advice I can give is that in higher winds, take down the foresail first. The boat sails and points under the main alone, very well. Where will you be sailing it from? Feel free to drop a note with any questions... best of luck, Rich.
@proto57 thanks, and as you said, I found out is correct. It is a great sailing boat! I just put up about 4 video clips of sailing in it, surprisingly fast boat and moves good in only 5-10kt winds. I been sailing in lake ponchartrain, good big lake to learn in.
Hi: We usually sail out of Verplank... so we are sailing in Haverstraw and Stony Point Bay. It's a nice big part of the River. The lower end of the bay is Croton point, and I don't usually go north around the bend, past Indian Point, and up to Peekskill... I could, but the bends in the river, the currents and winds make it more of a task than most of the bays... I've gotten caught around the corner more than once, having to motor back... how is sailing by you?
Nice video! Really captures the feel.....I'm going to try and post a video "response"...a video made with the same model boat but on San Francisco Bay................
Thanks for the ride. Maybe we'll see you out there. We just got a 19 foot Mariner that we'll be sailing out of the Hudson Marina, just next door to the Viking in Verplanck, NY.
...on second thought, it looks like we will not get the Oyster in the water this year. A huge project, and some other stuff came up. I might get out for a weekend on a lake someplace... maybe Candlewood, or some such. Good luck with your boat this year... Rich.
No, they are both lightweight aluminum tubular spars. O'day at this time anodized all their spars a sort of brassy or golden color, which might make it look like a light wood in the video.
The outboard motor is very loud. So why don't you by a diffrent out board like a honda 2.2 deasel engine. I have on of those for my sailing boat and its very queit and work perfactly for my boat. I got it for about 30 pounds of ebay. Great boat by the way. (Im live in great britten if your woundering on why i said pounds)
Hey mamacoke! Yes, O'Day did go out of business... I think back in the mid 1980's. But a couple of companies bought some of their molds. You can buy the O'Day 22 as a similar boat called the Precision 21. It has the same lower hull as my boat, at least. Look them up on Wikipedia...
As for our Bivalve, I sold it a couple of years ago. It was too much trouble maintaining a boat I never used. As it is we have the O'Day and a Glasspar 16 foot bowrider... enough to deal with! Nice to hear from you..
I like the video. Small boats, gentle breezes, perfect day. This is 'fundamental' sailing. I have a '69 O'Day Mariner, and I LOVE it. Thanks for posting.
Well thanks for the comments! I looked at your video, and feel the same way. The Mariner is a wonderful design, too. I think O'Day got it right in every size boat design they tackled. It surprises me they went out of business... but I know it wasn't for lack of great sailing, safe, quality designs. Post more of your boat... I will when I have a chance... Rich.
Very Nice. I also has a 22!!

Excellent Video..I Like the Boat and Sounds..The Engine looks Like a Brittish seagull But I May Be Wrong..

Hi Sufi: Thanks for the comment. You are right, the motor is a Seagull. It is an early 80's vintage Silver Century 5 HP long shaft. Rich.

I'd love to see it, p5... I hear SF Bay is really rough at times... how does your O22 handle it?

Why no kicker? You'll find it hard to trim the mainsail for windward sailing without one

Nice vid, you've really captured the fun of small boat sailing, if feels like we're on board.
