  • Theres a moment in the KKK episode where one of the guys carrying a cross hits Archie on the head, somewhat lightly but it didn't seem intentional or even noticed by the actor, but Carol played along and acted like it kind of hurt. This show had great actors.

  • Probably an accident that got big laughs, so they kept it. Supposedly sitcom episodes are performed twice in front of two different studio audiences, and they cut together the episode that airs on TV using the strongest parts of both episodes--best read of a line, biggest laughs, etc. O'Connor & Stapleton were pros, so they stayed in character and it worked. No laughs and we'd never have seen this and they'd have used the other take without the flying egg bit.

  • Not scripted, or scripted to go a different way instead of what we saw. I agree they were so used to working together, it just came natural to them.

  • i think by then, they knew each other well enough to where it wasnt scripted and could make it look like it was lol

  • There was a moment on All in the Family when Meathead shoves a big chunk of chocolate cake in his mouth. As the audience applauds and they go to commercial, Rob Reiner, not aware the cameras are still rolling, spits the cake out! Usually with filmed shows, if the actors have to eat something, they have to anticipate another take of the same scene. If they keep eating, eventually they'll be too full!

  • @whewfan It was the episode where Mike/Gloria rent the Jefferson house next door. When Archie finds out, he's pissed and pushes Mike's face into the cake. Reiner spits it out, because---believe it or not---that fat liberal hates chocolate. (That is the truth.)

  • Scripted

  • It WAS scripted. Come on, you see how he really moves that fork. It was meant to happen.

  • @GINGERALER Agree Archie's flipping the egg was scripted, I just think Edith trying to eat it and it falling out of her mouth was an accident that got laughs, so they kept it.

  • oh fuck that's funny...NO it couldn't have been scripted -- you just can't script a gem like that. what makes it a gem is that they stay in character and just blend it in! they're brilliant, both of them, and true professionals--i love them!!

  • my guess was that it wasn't scripted but it was too funny to bother refilming. edith looks a little shock at the egg being thrown at her while archie continues what he is saying as if nothing had happened.

  • It looked like he was trying to fling it at one point. It seemed she improv'd.

  • It definitely was unscripted... to eat a piece of egg that Archie accidentally tossed at her. Most likely the script would gave called for her to make some sort of parallel between him accdintally throwing food at her, and the "missijng stuff"

  • It's obvious that the egg is the one doing the improvising.

  • what would Archie think about things in 2011?

  • @Andreas748 What's did our world get into? A colored president?!

  • my guess is the flying egg was scripted, but not the dropping egg, but who knows, they know how to be funny and genuine at the same time

  • Probably not scripted.

  • does anyone know the name of this episode or what season its from? i have most of them on dvd...i cant find this one..i dont recognize it. but its hillarious

  • @rickbeezer34 At the end he tells you what episode it was - 'Sleeping and the Crime Wave' from season 9

  • that just shows how good they were to go on like nothing happen

  • RIP Carroll

  • Love when things like that are UNrehearsed

    makes it more Life like

  • Did you ever notice that when the camera shows the front of the house and the front porch, that it really doesn't match with the porch as we see it from the living room vantage point?

  • @tinyflyonthewall Yup. I wish they would've found a house with a porch and siding.

  • @SpudMills When I was a kid, I didn't get the humor of this show, my parents, particularly my Dad, loved the show. Now I find myself quite fond of it. I guess that's nostalgia for you. I think you can google Archie Bunker house or find it on flickr. Funny how the actual house portrayed has very little to do with the show. I'm sure they could have found such a house, it was just probably poor communication between set designers and location cameramen? A small detail, but we noticed it.

  • What is this, the zapruder film.

  • ok so im an 18 year old person that has watched this show since i was old enough to know what is funny and what isnt ... if you think that kids dont watch old shows like this you are crazy!! i love this show ... its an oldy but a goody

  • NOT scripted, just covered seamlessly by two veteran pros. imagine how the undisciplined crew of the Carol Burnett show would have handled this -- they'd have been sniggering up a storm, ruining the pace and driving a truck through the "Fourth Wall".

  • It was definitely scripted. If you look carefully, it falls off his fork while the camera is facing him, then they cut to a new camera and it flies off his fork into her lap that time. Two cuts from two cameras means two eggs falling off which suggests it was intentional to me. But they just don't make shows like this anymore. This show was and always will be a classic!

  • @babybirdhome Could it not have been editing from camera 1 & 2 on the same shot, different angles?

  • @iiwatcher I considered that but I don't think that's it. I watched it frame-by-frame and in the face shot of Archie, his head has already begun tilting forward when he flicks the food at Edith. When it cuts to the face shot of Edith, the food has already hit her before his head begins to tilt forward. I could be wrong, but I think this was planned, or a happy accident that "worked" so they did a re-take from the second angle. The timing is almost spot on, but not quite the same by my eye.

  • No his head is not tilting forward in the first shot. If anything it is tilting back or cocking, which makes his tilt forward on the second shot a logical sequence if it were one shot from two different angles. . . he cocks, shoots the food then tilts his head forward after it hits her. Watch it again. "I could be wrong" I think you are. To me this is clearly a cut from 1 & 2. What remains to be known is whether it was "a happy accident" or scripted with some ad-lib reactions from the actors.

  • @iiwatcher I consider your opinion to be a possibility. But I disagree with the 1 & 2 cut. Watch the cadence of his head movement compared to the emphasis in his voice. They don't match across the two cuts, they're off by about 1/2 second. If you watch the clip frame by frame, there's 1-2 frames just before the cut where you can see his head begin to move forward very slightly which fits with the cadence and emphasis in his voice. Take two blows that cadence by .5 sec. So I think it's two takes.

  • @babybirdhome Dayum, I'm not about to some bone collector dissection & examine all that shit frame by frame so I'll just take your word for it, Haha.

I think we can both agree though that w/e the shot was, these great actors made it work. ; )

  • @iiwatcher Definitely! :)

  • I think it was a mistake that the actors and director didn't think it was worth stopping the cameras and fussing over! It was something that naturally could happen when two people are really eating and was kind of funny when she tried to eat it! They were from the old school where it was mostly before a live audience and had the 'show must go on' philosophy!

  • You have FAR too much time on your hands, DingbatPrissy.

  • haha that was an accident... Conservative Ol' Archie would've never done something so riskay to Edith like that on purpose lol. But they just went with it I notice alot of mistakes and bloops on the Honeymooners too.

  • Those two actors were JUST SO GOOD and SO VERY TALENTED that even the slip with the food was caught and delt with professionally and STILL VERY FUNNY!!! Im going to miss seeing them!!

  • What's the point of this video?

  • I think not but it was a great addition

  • i just realized that it was probably scripted to come off his fork and land in her mouth. they probably tried it like 40 times and carol just didn't have the hand-eye coordination to get it right. this one is probably the last take when it just bounced off her chest and she picked it up to put it back on carol's fork and was expecting the director to say cut but carol stayed in character and kept talking so jean just put it in her mouth. btw i'm really fucking high right now : )

  • i just think it was out of character of her to throw it in her mouth. she was probablly acting on impulse, just cause it was so darn hilarious. But I think it would have been more "in charachter" of her, to have sweetly tried to replace in back nicely on his place, arranging it "just so". As if the poor guy had been unaware of losing his egg.

  • if it was accident, it was great improv

  • that is scrpited. he threw the egg at her trying to say he thought or knew it was that was making things disappear from the house

  • The show was videotaped with multiple cameras, so I don't think it was scripted. Some things just happen...

  • DISCLAIMER: The only thing worse than your dumbass graphics and music was the fact that you shot a TV screen. Idiot.

  • the camera angle suggests it's scripted. At least the originol egg fling, maybe not Edith dropping it the 2nd time

  • No way this was scripted--it had nothing to do with the conversation they were having. I think Carroll was lost in the dialogue and didn't realize he had a piece of egg on the fork. So, off it goes.

  • Greatest television show in the history of the world.

  • good show

  • It's scripted because the cameras are switched right when he flings it.

  • Lol I always wonderedif something was scripted or not when something like the eggs flying off the fork and jean stapleton picking it up and eating.

  • @dstewart28 it happened* To answer your question it looked like it was unscripted and being the great actors they are they were able to roll right long with it.

  • Scripted or it would be scrambled.

  • scipted

  • This was scripted.

  • Looks like he meant to fling the egg at her - probably in the script.

  • Looks like a mistake to me hahaha

  • I was going to say unscripted, but if you watch it a second time, he FLINGS the egg at her; that was no mistake. It may have been unscripted, but he did it on purpose; the real question is, did she know it was coming and was her response to pick it up and eat it expected by him?

  • its scripted!

  • Looks to me like there is a bad edit splice at the 28 second mark.

  • I think so. Just the way he "snapped" it.

  • Oh, it's a Stephanie episode. No wonder I didn't recognize it.

  • why dont you 2 little girls go outside and argue. and maybe one of you will come back a man..

  • @65ludwig THERE CAN ONLY BE *ONE*! lol

  • they just don't make actors like they use to

  • @therealsolstice They don't make Edsels anymore. You don't hear Ford bragging about it.

  • @therealsolstice I AGREE

  • @therealsolstice that's for sure! Today all sit coms are one liners and average actors since the actors don't have much to work with.

  • All in the Family, Archie,Edith,Gloria and Mike Rule

  • I think he did it on purpose (scripted), aiming straight for her face but kinda missing, - but the piece of egg that didn't make it into her mouth was an accident.

  • There is a chance that it was scripted though. All in the Family would shoot the same episode twice usually in front of a live audience, and what are the chances of it happening twice? And if this isn't in front of a live audience, they could have stopped filming and re-shot it. Carrol could have barely put the egg on his fork and flung it hard enough for it to go flying.

Or, if could have been an accident too LOL, I'm just saying it could be either way here.

  • Not scripted.

Miss Jean Stapleton and Mr. Caroll O'Connor are stage actors. They know how to make a flub like this work to their advantage.

  • your mom is scripted

  • Oooooooooooo!!! Nice one

  • Maybe social commentary is a over your head little guy....

  • And I say who gives a shit about whatever ethnicity you are.

  • I say not scripted. You are just seeing to great actors rolling with the punches and improving as to what they think their character would do.

  • Not scripted. Caroll O'Connor didn't mean to fling that egg on Jean Stapleton. That was completely by mistake. Edith rolled with it. Not scripted. Good video. If you catch anymore scripted or not scripted videos of All in the Family, let us know. Post 'em!

  • I say scripted, they were geniuses regarding comedey timing, ect.

  • Scripted. Because as it's being thrown, the camera switches to Edith.

  • You don't know if that switch would have been in there anyway. It actually looks like Carol O'Connor did that on purpose.

  • @Lainer1 but they film the entire scene with two cameras... the "switches" are created during editing when they decide which camera to use at what times etc... so they already knew about the egg fling (scripted or not) when they created the "switch"

  • no its scripted cuz you can see he wants to fling the eggs at her and the look on his face when he did it he didnt look surprised or anything

  • last nitro was good could of been a new intro to all in the family if done right

  • looks like he flung it at her

  • guys like us we had it made

  • It looks purely accidental to me. It was forked onto his fork and meant to stay there. However, when he used his hands to express himself, it made it fly in the air and land on her blouse. The suprised look on her face shows it was an accident. Then she did something that Lucy Ball, who was also popular then, would have done. As an act of funniness, she picked it up and attempted to eat it, but she was nervous over it being an accident, so some (not all) of it came out of her mouth.

  • that egg just does NOT want to be eaten.

  • Shocking...it's improvised.

  • Definitely scripted

  • isnt this the one where Stephanie "steals"?

  • what does edith eating an egg off her chest have to do with politics? btw, it think it was scripted.

  • they actually ate their food on this show instead of just pushing it around their plate. gave it more authenticity

  • scripted

  • BloodyCape, I'm totally with you. Apart from the getting lucky bit. Although you do need a bit of luck to steal something and get away with it (if not twice, well definately once anyway, which started the whole shite to begin with), luck did not 'elect' him into office. No, that was down to the repugnant scheming filth of the 'supreme' (I don't think so, daddy's pal's) court. Everyone knows deep, deep down in the extreme depths within themselves that Bush lost in the first place. Obama=relief...

  • My Republican minded friend, I have every reason to 'whine' as you call it. I have been abroad several times, and believe me, during the Bush years the US & its people were detested like you wouldn't believe! Obama has so far got a bit of respect & belief back from the rest of the world. 2000 hurt us BIG time. A big mess. Btw, I am white and I voted Obama, so don't pull race bullshit on me. A lot of Americans knew about Bush being stupid & incompetent yet stiil voted. Ignorant voters??? Hmmm...

  • the us was hated long before bush got in. my entire life we have been bashed worldwide no matter how much good we do. obama is being destroyed in speeches by hugo chavez in syria right now, isreali news calls obama an antisemite, yemen news is crying because obama is "ignoring" the war with houthi's...obama isnt shit. i voted for bush because i was sick of saddams shit for 8+yrs and numerous cease fire infractions. bush made me proud.we finally made decisions and took action unlike clinton

  • allg govs got secrets but for you to just ignore all the good that has come from this country just makes me sick. someday we will have a president with the balls to actually become the monster everyone calls us anyway. we truly need to cut off every dime in aid and food to every country and tell them to fuck off. can u name a gov you DO like? or has your targetting system just been locked on bashing the US? how can u love your country after saying that?why would u love a country u described?

  • to be completely honest, i dont love any COUNTRY as a whole.. I apparently am one of the only people that try to think of this planet as a whole and not split it into different "types" of people simply because of the shit that has been fed to us since the day we were concieved... and to the people who thumbs up you and thumbs down me on everything i say and you say are just plain ignorant... and the fact that you would attack me in such a way shows your own incompetence.. I fear for you child.

  • PUFF PUFF GIVE ......SON

  • @mysticx0 It is a childish idea of love to ignore all the bad. A more mature love would see the flaws and, while still deeply loving, aim to correct those flaws. I personally dislike when people go "America is #1" or "America is Satan!" because neither take into account the full story. America does great things, and also does some horrible things.

  • @schadenfreudelolz22 As we all do. America IS us.

  • as for the racist thing, ive seen more than enough proof of black people saying they are voting obama and when asked basic questions, they knew shit about him. some said he was mayor of chicago, most never heard of him until the debates and some didnt know his middle name which proves they dont even watch the news, that was a story that lasted a looong time. voting for him simply because he is black is just as racist as not voting for him because hes black. obama got mostly racist votes.

  • Maybe I'm a sell out or somethin' but I'm black and voted for McCain. I didn't like Obama's position on health care.

  • @beanio12 There are great men who are black and more conservative than McCain. Not only are you not alone, but you are in good company.

  • @beanio12 u made a decision based on politics to vote. unlike many of your retarded bretheren who voted obama cause he is half black. u r not a sellout but EVERYONE WHO VOTED OBAMA IS RACIST OR COMMUNIST WHICH IS EVEN WORSE

THE DEMS PREACH ACCEPTANCE BUT THEN USE RACE TACTICS IN ELECTIONS . they dont give a shit about u they just want your vote

  • settle down bevis

  • @mysticx0 AMEN!

  • i love all in the family because it was so raw and fresh and i have to say that compared to the bullshit they put on tv today, it still is...

  • What I said above...

  • Bush was terrible, but BO stinks WORSE!

  • Actually the Dems had the Congress for two years BEFORE BO got elected and they refused to impeach Bush, and refused to get us out of Iraq.

If you are intellectually honest you have to admit there is plenty of blame to go around, including the American people for trusting ANY POLITICIAN.

It's OUR country THEY work for US!!!! Both parties are screwing us and will continue until folks recognize that simple fact.

  • actually i am intellectually honest and no shit sherlock when you say we are to blame for trusting any politician but all i am saying is that i feel more comfortable with Obama than I ever would with Bush. Bush was just a fifth-grade minded individual who happened to get lucky for obvious reasons. and he believes history will be kind to him...heh, not going to happen. a few out there believe he was a good president, those people should not be allowed in a voting booth again.

  • the democrats had congress since 2007 when this recession started and guess what barry soetero aka barack hussein uhbama was there

  • it's scripted, he flips his fork way too fast and hard, obviously he was trying to do that.

  • I agree... Obama is a moron. Archie would kick his ass in a fight.

  • Archie Bunker could kick ANYONE'S ass in a fight.

    Archie could kick Fonzie's ass.

  • haha i would pay money to watch that

  • I had a HUGE crush on Fonzie, but it all died when he water-skied over the "shark"

But I still love Archie Bunker. He reminds me of my dad, and all the good times we had together, watching this show.

  • I strongly believe it was scripted due to the fact that the camera was pointed at Edith however if the camera was focusing more on Archie then I would support that it was not scripted.

  • Because it's a television sitcom and they always have 3 cameras on pointing at the actors?

  • i believe it was scripted

why else would the camera angle be focused right on edith while archie is talking?

you notice he's talking about things disappearing and then his egg 'disappears'

    it was a visual punchline

  • As far as you know.

  • yo momma do,dats hoo!

  • lashana-Why are you here then?

  • not scripted.

  • Not scripted but deliberate by O'Connor..

  • This was I believe in the final AITF season. According to director John Rich, in his memoirs, each AITF episode was taped twice. Two performances, two different audiences, in the interest of capturing theatrical magic. When they did,

a full episode was sculpted from the two.

This was clearly an ad-lib by veteran actors in character, and all knew what to

    do with it.

  • If it's All in the Family, I'd say not scripted, but if it was a scene from the spinoff, I'd say it's more likely to be scripted.

  • Who care's meathead!

  • Jean and Carol could have dont it scripted or not. We will never know. Their talent was/is that good!

  • Yeah I just think it's a different breed now with screen acting. It's more about trying to get the details of real emotions in the face and actually becoming the character as opposed to on stage it's a lot more about the performance and stage presence of the body to show emotions.

Both takes different styles of artistry and both can be respected in their own right.

  • I think this was Scripted, it seemed like they were always throwing in little pieces in the Episode of something that might actually happen, like how Edith would react to the Egg being thrown at her, she ate it!! ~Erin

  • thats crazy! lolz. which episode was this?

  • I agree with JamesCecilia. The camera shifted to Stapelton's face right before when this occurds. Why would they do that if it wasn't scripted?

  • Actually asalmog, the show was being tapped so they probably had a camera on Archie and another camera on her. The just cut it up like that in the editing room

  • asa:

The show used THREE cameras in every scene. They did not 'shift' a camera. Stapleton's reaction shot was from a separate camera.

  • thats what makes beautiful chemistry between two great artisian of their craft, it blurred the lines...these were theatre pros who were mostly on broadway...it was a different, more talented group of actors back then...cut or no cut the film is still rolling...the best tv couple ever...two masters...my favorite show

  • Theater actors are still just as talented, you just don't have as many crossovers as back in that time.

  • Theatre actors aremore talented...thatswhat I wasgetting at...Isyour reading comprehension that slow? Your talking to aman whosgrandfather wasLee Sabinson..Thewell known/rrespected Broadway/silver screen producer. A more memorable production wasthe 1952 musical "Finnian's Rainbow".." My great uncle is Harvey Sabinson. He was the head of the American theatre wing. I wasgoing to onaverage 3 showsBroadway and off about 3x a week from ages 4-22..past 5 yearsnot asmuch. So get into perspective

  • I got your point, but if you look at what you wrote, you specifically referred to the past tense as if current stage actors aren't as good as back than.

But I see that you're challenged by the English language so I wouldn't expect you to understand such concepts as chronological tenses.

  • im am quoting myself from my original post..."These were theatre pros who were mostly on broadway (stage/theatre)..IT WAS A DIFFERENT MORE TALENTED GROUP OF PERFORMERS BACK THEN..) For them...cut or no cut...filming or not it doesnt faze them...they are pros...my underlying statment was F the camera...Sorry for coming off like an over zellous condesending prick...Its what keeps me lonly in life

  • who cares

  • I don't think that was scripted. If it wasn't I want to know how Carol & Jean didn't laugh.

  • I think it just happened and they were great pros and were able to keep it together.

  • that is the difference between shows then and today, that's what made this show very good, or at least one quality that made this show very good

  • Yeah, if you ever go to a stage show and witness something go wrong, actors are trained to keep their temper and play it off.

  • It wasn't scripted. It just happened, and they both went with it, and then the audience laughed at the clip later.

  • i think i remember them always saying "Filmed in front of a studio audience" after the show or right in the begining...

  • Yeah, I remember that, too...

  • I guess the audience was there while it was being filmed...

  • Judging by the camera angle change... I'd say scripted

  • it was most likely scripted

  • I promise you all that was 100% in the script!

  • You promise based on what, where you the script manager for the episode?

  • unscripted. why would the writers want to archie to hit edith with an egg? sure it's funny, but does it not seem a bit out of place?

  • scripted. note archie moves hand up and down three times but the 4th time he catapults it foreward. also the morsel was tiny yet what edith consumes is different, probably replaced off screen for hygene's sake, but it was almost a whole egg.

  • he was talking with his hands, which he continued after the fling

  • He does kinda chuck it...if this was an earlier episode I'd say no, but I do think it was scripted. A real error moment is in an early episode, when Gloria tries to prove she's allergic to lima beans. She forces one into her mouth, but she misses her mouth with the fork at first and totally stabs herself above the upper lip, that HAD to hurt but she took it like a real trooper!

  • dont know if its scripted or not, but used my favorite song as BG music!!!! Blues Brothers rock!

  • Yes; Archie is supposed to be drunk in this scene. Buttery eggs make for perfect slips of the fork - bull's eye. Jean perhaps add libbed by partially consuming the egg. Good piece of video to analyze. A scene where Archie is drunk at breakfast waving his fork around simply begs for the stunt.

  • You can tell it was scripted because of the live 3 camera shoot.

Right when Archie flings the egg, it cuts to the next camera. Had it have been unscripted there would have been no switch.

This is, of coarse, presumming they didn't cut the show in post-production.

  • awesome :)

    they recovered like pros

    Jean is genius there

  • Wow! That was probably the funniest scene ever!!!

  • Wow they handled that without even cracking a smile. I would say it definitely wasnt scripted for him to throw egg on her lol. But they handled it so well youd nev
