the clash played the game as did everyone they played it well, very quickly finding out ideals do not pay for meals .if the public are buying , you are selling.r&r lesson number 1.
these blokes knew who was buttering their bread, father chrismass had nothing to do with it.
let's not forget that bernie rhodes was instrumental in creating the clash. he was also the end of it, i don't understand how joe managed to let bernie get so deep into his head.
The only interview I've seen with Joe where he sounds like a bit of a twat... just a bit, not too much. Glad he didn't continue this way for long, I love listenin to Joe.
I realised there wasn't anything. Any record, that I could have safely grab hold of, and leap out of a space-shuttle with. Yellin... and feeling satisfied.
@digivate the clash disn't pretend anything joe strummer may not have been proud of hionts background pre clash but he soon didnt care... the clash were what they were!!! there was no pretence they sung about things that fucking matter classes dont!!! just a nother form of division!
BERNIE RHODES FUCKED THE CLASH UP FROM THE END OF 1983 ONWARDS! joe never belived in any of the bollocks hes chatting in this video, its all bernie's words coming out of joe's mouth
Everything Joe says in this interview completly contradicts everything he's been saying for his entire Clash career. London Calling and the two albums that followed were released as a reactions against punk's restrictive formula and here he seems to be against music doing new things and developing new ideas. When he says (in the next part) that only Blacks should perform Black music it completly flies in the face of his ideas about multiculturalism. What did Bernie do to him??
Don't understand why people say this is an embarrassing moment for him and making suggestions drugs are involved. But then I get a little alarmed that perhaps he may be being a lunatic at this moment and I can't see it because I'm equally so. All I know is I love what he's saying and share all his views and feel like Hurrah! All these things I think and feel, my hero has too! I would go check myself into a mental institute but my lame government closed them all down.
He is so right about the U.S. having lunatic inhibiting rules. The corporations are too powerful and just homogenise culture. Look at all those awful manufactured pop stars.
I think at this point Strummer himself had become too self-indulgent. Whatever mindless bent he was on during this period is probably what drove him to fire Mick. This rambling nonsense could have been expected from Joe in '77 but by '84/85 he should have been experienced enough to know better.
Joe had his teeth fixed at this point. I still remember him doing London Calling on Letterman. US. TV Debut, spit slinging over the mike I think the chipped tooth added to this.
The show was called Fridays. I don't remember the details exactly, but I believe he produced a band's record some time around the end of 1980 and accepted dentures instead of money.
You know there was a clip here of them on Letterman and it disapeared. It just vanished. These producers and directors just can't stand seeing their material somewhere and NO REVENUE or royalties coming in. There was a clip of The Smithereens on SNL doing The Blues before and After. That one also disappeared. I do remember Fridays though! Thanks for the feedback.
Matedog2, cool clips on your page. Got to keep their spirit alive. These guys were still a major influence on music post 80's. They came from humble beginnings and still kept there cool with all their fame. Although their roots were Punk, Strummer was very much against the Skin-head movement, he made music for all people. Johnny Appleseed, he's talking about MLK.
totally agree, this doesn't seem like the down to earth strummer that fans know. he talks of not overdubbing things, all of london calling was over dubbed. two takes on every song to make it sound bigger.

With that comment on 'overdubbing a trashcan rolling down the stairs'...do you think he meant 'Blasphemous rumours' of Depeche Mode?

I love Strummer but he'd seemingly lost the plot at this point. He's almost exploding with frustration and sadness.

he for sure made some good points, but he's really nuts in this! too much ego and toughness or something. He's still rad tho.

Whoa...this is a bit embarrassing, and I'm a HUGE Joe Strummer fan. So sad, really.
On a lighter note, I love Paul's expression throughout the video. It's like "Ugh God, get me away from this lunatic on my side"

I think the double tracking of everything was specifically cited for The Card Cheat, but yeah, there was tons of overdubs throughout the record.
It's worth noting that Buddy Holly double tracked his vocals and that was "roots rock" that Joe was supposedly all about at this point.
matedog2 2 years ago
@moneyhorsehouse I think Strummer sounds completely down to earth here. Everything he says about America still applies today.

Yea I'll agree that this wasn't one of the Joes greatest moments... having said that I still get chills hearing him speak from 1:43 to 2:18...
