I just uploaded a time lapse video hoping that it would help you see how I paint fur..
normally I concentrate on painting patterns till nearly the end and then I begin to pick out finer details. like painting long grass, one doesnt see the whole blade that is in the distance, but views more of the detail only close up...hope this helps!
I don't right now have a tutorial for longer hair....I did paint a bobcat, which has longer fur about the face...see him in my website under oil paintings, let me try to put together a bit of sequence of stages on how I painted him and maybe that would help....
