@MrKaylynn1998 man bro ur lucky winning a contest those things sell for like 250 on ebay but i view them more valuable than the money,....still have Fedora on it or did you flash it to Win7?
@psptechnologypsp no i have one laptop that was shipped to me with win 7 and the xo i don't use.....i don't like linux unless it is ubuntu i like windows the only reason i wanted the xo with mac was just to say "hey i got a mac"....i cant afford shit from apple
I completely agree I can't afford apple diamond stuff either...you are priveledged/special to have the XO though I wish I had one but I am too cheap to want to buy one from someone on eBay..too expensive for me although they are cheap. Nice little things that I value still, just because they are the ultimate tool for hackers.
Congrats that you have one although you don't use it..I love the little things so take it from me, awesome netbook/notebook
@MrKaylynn1998 Wait, are you implying that Mac OS X is better than Fedora or that you're putting down a free open-source operating system which is superior in every way to Mac OS X?
@JogBird this thing can't play any game worth of squat. It's for educational markets and for people in poor countries. I don't think it can play Crysis. Linux can barely play any game as it is.
@AllAroundBang the countries these laptops are given to are torn by war and violence. Im pretty sure they want kids to get an education instead of get into the violence.
@AllAroundBang mabey its because cultres with the money to develop it probubly like yours has lent money to cultresw ho dont have the money to develop their own versions becaus e the rich cultres are chargining extream intrest rates for the cultre to pay back while there struggling to feed themselves, its only right that the cultres that can help help out.. a human is a human is a human no matte rhwo they are where they live wat colour their skin is or their cultre open yr eyes!!! YOU ARE HUMAN!
A game console has far less overhead than a Linux operating system. Also, very few game consoles are designed by non-profits that don't have billions of dollars to sink into R&D.
My EEEPC is much better than that and not much more expensive. That project was a failure right from the beginning. Linux, Intel and MS all tried to use it to take advantage of poor children just to promote their stuff. Shameful.
It was never about freedom or helping people, it was about trying to spread Linux and using poor people as an excuse to do that. Force it on the poor little kids who have no choice. Once Microsoft offered to help the project FOSS community got their knickers in a twist. In the end the project failed miserably because the flavour of Linux they used was crap and the price was nowhere near the $100 they originally claimed the laptops would go for. What about freedom to choose Microsoft?
um, im pretty sure they chose linux because it was free. i dont think they would have put vista or xp on there or you would have said "it was about trying to spread vista/xp and using poor people as an excuse to do that" and im pretty sure they didnt have the damn time to make their own fucking operating system.

That was as staged demonstration, right? :) At least it wasn't the first powering up, or otherwise it would have asked for your name and your prefered icon color.

OLPC - One Lie Per Customer - Dishonest, incompetent, unprofessional way of doing business. I had them cancel my order. They said they did. But found out that they didn't. They say "Oh, just refuse the shipment then we'll give you money back" but it has been 6 weeks they have not shipped the laptop. Then they say "Sorry you can't refuse the shipment anymore it has been more then 30 days since you ordered" .. I would stay away if I were you
If they can't do a professional job, they shouldn't be out there. Non-profit? Why then they are they not sending my laptop or return my money. They are in the business of "Take the money and disappear"
All you care about is getting the peice of shit laptop because your too poor to afford a real one. Despite the fact your helping some homeless child in a 3rd world country. Why'd you try to cancel your order after you went through the trouble of donating anyway? I never heard of a refund for a donation anyway?
I believe you misunderstand the idea behind the OLPC project. It's a non-profit education project to put laptops in the hands of children in third-world countries to boost their (possibly very poor) education. It's not a commercial product. The G1G1 offer was a fundraising drive.
I have an idea for a non-profit organization. It's kind of like OLPC, except instead of sending kids computers, I was thinking that maybe I'd send them stuff like clothes, blankets, food, vaccines and clean water, stuff that they, y'know, need to to survive. I know it's kind of a crazy idea, but I really think it has potential!
A 10-second Google search will locate at least a dozen charities already engaged in that sort of humanitarian work. I invite you to donate to them instead of OLPC if you would prefer to supply those types of resources.
ummmm its 1GB flash memory in there... so you can only put like 3 movies on there and youre done! you cannt add anything else it suks it not for ppl its for children 12- and helpind donate money
It supports the SDHC format and those memory cards theoretically have the addressing capacity of 2048GB (Compared to the 4GB limit SD has reached). I've used a cheap SD card to expand my XO-1 to 3GB, but the OLPC wiki says it should support 256GB with the current driver.
Having a large server HHD for the school to store student's data seems to be the path the project has chosen.
