I completely agree I can't afford apple diamond stuff either...you are priveledged/special to have the XO though I wish I had one but I am too cheap to want to buy one from someone on eBay..too expensive for me although they are cheap. Nice little things that I value still, just because they are the ultimate tool for hackers.

A game console has far less overhead than a Linux operating system. Also, very few game consoles are designed by non-profits that don't have billions of dollars to sink into R&D.

Not every Linux distro is the same size. Puppy Linux fits a fully-working kernel and UI system in about 50MB.

My EEEPC is much better than that and not much more expensive. That project was a failure right from the beginning. Linux, Intel and MS all tried to use it to take advantage of poor children just to promote their stuff. Shameful.

It was never about freedom or helping people, it was about trying to spread Linux and using poor people as an excuse to do that. Force it on the poor little kids who have no choice. Once Microsoft offered to help the project FOSS community got their knickers in a twist. In the end the project failed miserably because the flavour of Linux they used was crap and the price was nowhere near the $100 they originally claimed the laptops would go for. What about freedom to choose Microsoft?

OLPC - One Lie Per Customer - Dishonest, incompetent, unprofessional way of doing business. I had them cancel my order. They said they did. But found out that they didn't. They say "Oh, just refuse the shipment then we'll give you money back" but it has been 6 weeks they have not shipped the laptop. Then they say "Sorry you can't refuse the shipment anymore it has been more then 30 days since you ordered" .. I would stay away if I were you

I believe you misunderstand the idea behind the OLPC project. It's a non-profit education project to put laptops in the hands of children in third-world countries to boost their (possibly very poor) education. It's not a commercial product. The G1G1 offer was a fundraising drive.

I have an idea for a non-profit organization. It's kind of like OLPC, except instead of sending kids computers, I was thinking that maybe I'd send them stuff like clothes, blankets, food, vaccines and clean water, stuff that they, y'know, need to to survive. I know it's kind of a crazy idea, but I really think it has potential!

It supports the SDHC format and those memory cards theoretically have the addressing capacity of 2048GB (Compared to the 4GB limit SD has reached). I've used a cheap SD card to expand my XO-1 to 3GB, but the OLPC wiki says it should support 256GB with the current driver.

Having a large server HHD for the school to store student's data seems to be the path the project has chosen.
