If politically correct females think that being a Pan Am stewardess was somehow furthering the cause of Women’s Lib then they are very much mistaken. Then, as now, being an Air Hostess was glamorous. It still retains that glamour and sexiness - and this, for a woman, is freedom… the freedom to be feminine.
It's really sad that people still think that women should get their jobs based on their looks. As glamorous as these women were seen, their job was so discriminating. At the age of 23 or if they got married they would be FIRED because they were now too "old" to be ice candy for the men that would board these planes. Also, these women could be given "underwear checks" by male customers, meaning that a guy could lift up her skirt from behind and look at her underweak. Disgusting.
When I was living in Los Angeles in the late 60's, I remember there was a restaurant that tried to replicate the experience of flying on an airline. The interior was built to look like an airplane cabin, complete with real airline seats, and the waitresses all wore stewardess uniforms.
Everyone wants the 60's, I want the 50's when they did this with railroads. The sleek modern trains, the stewardesses, the parlor and observation cars. My I adore what the railroads did with their steam and diesel locomotives when trying to imitate planes. Sad that when railroads came back to being semi popular it was because our airports went to the pits and the glamour was gone from flying.
Ah, Doctrine of Separate Spheres and androcentrism, you are concepts that are sorely missed! Oh, how I wish I could have lived in the time when men were gentlemen and women were ladies. I would love to live in the 50's and 60's, sans the Vietnam War and feminist movement!
@Teritus911 hehe ya know... someone once said, "the problem with the world is....we went from Eminem to Justin Beiber" and I said, "NO.... we went from Beethoven to Eminem." And I got a cursing like you wouldn't believe! HAHA I see now that I'm getting a response similar to the one I gave to that guy. Interesting how Karma works eh? :D You're right though that was a beautiful impressionistic age.
back in the day you were required to be PRETTY, between 5foot2 and 5foot 6 and have 1 year off collage (so youre not stupid XD) now, half a year of bieng a nurse and youre done.. >:l damn..
The terminal is actually fairly close to the way the Miami terminal looked in those days. All the airlines and their arrangement are vert correct. The directors really did their homework!
@scatcat1994 Your comment implies that women were chosen only for their looks, and not their qualifications. In fact, all stewardesses in those days were highly qualified for their jobs, it's just that good looks was one of the qualifications. Also, the elimination of good looks as a qualification occurred long before Bin Laden did his dirty deeds - we have feminism to thank for THAT crime.
That's the wrong hat isn't it? In "Come Fly With Me." they wore similar hats but with a wing shaped clip. Plus the white colors were popped out of the blue blazers. Is this a seasonal change or what?
The Pan Am girls are HOT ! It's sad to see how ugly modern American women have become when compared to the sexy glamour and style of those beautiful Pan Am women of past decades.
Feminism ruined class and dignity by undermining the real distinction between the genders.
@JamieandhisIbanez Women were paid less than a man and were often forced to quit once they got married. Many employers wouldn't hire married women. Women were often denied loans without a man's approval and in many states it was illegal for a women to serve in a jury.
@haymaker710 my comment was about the women in this video. pan am stewardesses have been interviewed on modern television many times, and they have admitted they could have gotten away with murder, and had the time of their lives. i recall one woman saying: 'she slept with a different guy every night'. They had it easy as hell. They may not have had 'rights' but they could do pretty much anything, because of the status achieved with their job. i'd research pan am if i were you.
@JamieandhisIbanez Oh, I was talking about the women's lib movement in the 60's. I didn't know you meant Pan Am women specifically. By the way, I really don't like when people tell me to research things like you're giving me a homework assignment.
@haymaker710 yeah i meant pan am. well i thought you were also talking about pan am, and thus your statements would have been incorrect hence the homework assignment.
@4everPhantomslover I haven't seen this video in a month, asshole, I haven't read all the comments and I definately don't feel like reading your long convoluted ramblings.
@wilburhog You gotta remember they only pick pretty people for movies in general. Ugly people existed long before the beginning of homo sapien sapiens. Remember not to base your opinions on movies and then remember that this movie was actually made in 2002(-ish?), after all the feminist stuff, yeah? ;)
@wilburhog on the contrary, feminism helped these women fight for their rights in the workforce. At the age of 23 or if they got married they would be FIRED because they were now "too old" to be ice candy for the men that would board these planes. Also, these women could be given "underwear checks" by male customers. Meaning that a guy could just lift up her skirt from behind and look at her underwear. Disgusting! If you think that has class and dignity you are a pig.
@4everPhantomslover Stewardesses were NOT fired at age 23. I knew one once who was 26, although admittedly that's pushing it. Why shouldn't a company be allowed to maintain a glamorous image by hiring young, attractive women for a few years, then replacing them with new attractive young women? You create more opportunities that way. I swear, the feminazis have ruined everything that was good! They might as well demand that Victoria's Secret hire overweight grannies to model their lingerie!
As a american history major, they wer fired 23 maybe a 2 or 3 years over or under. Maybe you should open a history book once in a while before opening your mouth. These women deserved to be valued more than just eye candy and should not be fired or hired for only their looks but for their qualities and abilities. Thank God for feminism because now women can be anything they want to be in life and not be discriminated because of their looks. Also, why would grannies model lingerie?
@4everPhantomslover As an American history major, have you ever taken an English course? Your grammar is as convoluted as your thinking! Today's history books should be re-labeled "socialist propaganda". I don't need to read a history book about the 1960's, as I was there to see it for myself. To say that stewardesses were fired at 23 +/-2 yrs. shows an appalling ignorance of the facts. You might want to watch "the real stewardesses of Pan Am" series of clips on Youtube to get a clue.
@amateurphilosopher it is sad that people like you still exist in the world. People that believe that women are only a pretty face and nothing more. Also, I don't know why the heck you bring socialism into this, when all I am talking about is the equality of women. You know what....forget you. I am done and I don't have time to waste on people like you. Have a nice life!
@4everPhantomslover Sorry to have bothered you. You obviously are far too naive to understand the points I was making. I should have remembered that reason and logic are utterly foreign concepts to a feminist. Enjoy your delusions!
Frank Abagnale Jr. was a Pan-Am pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer - all before he was 20 years old. What a genius of a kid. And this is one of the best scenes from this movie.
In reality, many flight attendants didn't care too much for the pilots, and probably still don't. Go to ChezGigi.com and Pan Am Captains And The Revenge Of The Flight Attendants for memories of one former Pan Amer. I flew for Pan Am for twelve years, and it was very special-
Hot damn, a stewardess dressed like that would make me stop and take a second look. The Canadian stewardess I seen in my last flight are nothing compared to them. Only an Asian stewardess are equal to what I see in that video now.
the uniforms are right but the stewardess' of the 1960s would never have been allowed to have all that hair hanging down. The Uniform Code of Pan Am was set by the govt. and hair had to be at least 1" above the color to perform food service. These girls would never have gotten past the flight briefing. Also note Pan Am pilots did not enter airports with girls hanging off their arms -- fun for the movie not accurate for reality.
@av10cu5mli LOL, I'm glad someone caught that other than me! BTW that rule hasn't changed, it's still there for flights that have food service. Hair over the collar mark still has to be secured.
The blonde air hostie (at 0:46) is Deborah Kellner who danced with Brendan Fraser in "Blast From The Past" and walked topless from the pool in "A Night at the Roxbury".
I don't understand it! I mean how hard is it to make things a little classier? I'll give you the wings, because let's face it, with the amount of flight attendants today genuine gold for wings would be impossible, but why can't airlines start issuing Cabin Bags and White Gloves again? This uniform compared to those of today (I think) is actually more professional! Simple yet elegant! There was a time when even Cabin Crew had stripes on their jacket cuffs!
Silly beyond belief, wishful thinking of what airports and flying were like. It was nice to be able to board a plane without being hassled, I must admit.
I agree that airlines shouldn't hire fat or ugly women. All it does is put passengers off. Lets face it, its like be stuck in a classroom with that teacher from middle school you hated for 2 hrs. Now I will say that the more expensive delta flights still have pretty good looking stews.. Virgin Atlantic does still have the high standards.
I am in the airline business and have seen the changes over the last 30 yrs. I am 51 and now its like a walmart or a bus station. I work with a former swinging 1960's from Pan Am. The quality of service and high level of work standards are still evident
@lasbagman1 nowadays stewardesses(flight attendants) cant be flirty like that because of political correctness but airport security guards can sexually molest you.
@chinesericeboy The song is called "Come fly with me". The singer is Old Bue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, although I believe that michael buble does a pretty good version of it. Great Song and Great movie.
@calvinair A freight company bought the name Pan Am recently, but the logo is owned by someone else so we will see Pan Am up in the air again but under another graphical identity.
@HalfordJetset Hopefully they'll try to by back the pan am logo, and hopefully they'll stay true to the original brand identity of the company. I never knew pan am as an active company, but something that has ingrained itself so deeply in public opinion and popular culture to the point where people are genuinely saddened in its absence is something that I would love to see revived.
yea, i saw in balboa park san diego there is an air museum and an exhibit is PSA uniforms 50s to 70s; my mom said that those girls were the elite, to get that gig was like american royalty.
Cool film; I flew on one of the first Pan Am 747's in September 1970 from LHR-JFK. It was an amazing experience for a five year old and I shall never forget it!
well i can tell you this much, the founders never said anything about keeping this country only for whites only. not to mention they brought blacks from Africa and now they're complaing about telling blacks to back to Africa, racist ppl are fucken retarted. and America took half of Mexico's land, while theres still hispanics in the southwest and west. U.S.A. is whites, blacks and hispanics. not just whites.
I remember I was 16 and wanted to be him in this scene, Hell in the whole film, I dressed up in my suit played this on my Ipod and imagined myself walking through the airport with stewardesses on my arm :)
These were the days. I remember the trans-atlantic trips on PanAm with my parents. They were just giant great, happy and fun parties with beautiful young stewardesses (not the old grump hogs and homos we have today who 'go JetBlue' on ya)...
Yep - these days were fantastic!!! I need a time machine - I would go and never come back...
1960's look for woman, fashion, hair, etc., it's definitely my favorite... they look so feminine, especially the tall big hair and those mini skirts, uufff , hot hot hot - caliente pu~eta!
@DVDluvr123 "That was back in the 20th century when women looked like women - and they were damn proud of it!" - Your statement from a year ago. I normally would not comment on a posting this old, but I could not agree more. Of course, be glad that you are anonymous. Because if you were caught even THINKING that in America today, by law you'd get your nuts sliced off.
I would've LOVED to have flown on TWA & Pan Am in the early to mid '60s!!! That was when jet travel was new and exciting!!! There were no worries about terrorists attacks and you didn't have to take off your shoes & socks and go through extensive security checks!! Also back then as shown in "Catch Me If You Can", Jet airliner pilots were TOTALLY AWESOME figures to young kids in their spotless white caps & gold trimmed blue uniforms and genuine gold wing pins!!! That mystique seems to be gone now
I did fly as a "stewardess" in the 60's, those days were called the "Glory days". We were thought of as every man's dream. Not so today. It was so much fun
If politically correct females think that being a Pan Am stewardess was somehow furthering the cause of Women’s Lib then they are very much mistaken. Then, as now, being an Air Hostess was glamorous. It still retains that glamour and sexiness - and this, for a woman, is freedom… the freedom to be feminine.

whats the song called?
chinesericeboy 1 year ago
@chinesericeboy The song is called "Come fly with me". The singer is Old Bue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, although I believe that michael buble does a pretty good version of it. Great Song and Great movie.

calvinair 1 year ago
@calvinair A freight company bought the name Pan Am recently, but the logo is owned by someone else so we will see Pan Am up in the air again but under another graphical identity.
HalfordJetset 1 year ago 2
@HalfordJetset Thanks for the information, but what i said was about the luxury and glamour of the flight,ok?:)
calvinair 1 year ago
@HalfordJetset Hopefully they'll try to by back the pan am logo, and hopefully they'll stay true to the original brand identity of the company. I never knew pan am as an active company, but something that has ingrained itself so deeply in public opinion and popular culture to the point where people are genuinely saddened in its absence is something that I would love to see revived.

It is interesting to note that American women dressed well back then and took pride in their personal appearance.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love commercial flying, especially in 1960's?
(2) Why do we enjoy to work on career related to aviation?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)
