John Wayne used his last movie "The Shootist" to tell his fans he had cancer and was dying from the disease.

I believe this was filmed in Coloma(Gold discovery area). He stayed at a hotel in Cameron Park. While he has in the lobby one day a friend of mine just happened to stop by and see all the people filtering in/out of the hotel so he stopped. It was John Wayne giving autographs. He said he was big, he was friendly and he was kind. They'll never be another one like him!

Filmed on October 25, 1977. That is just a little under two years to the day that John Wayne passed away. He died of cancer on June 11, 1979 at the age of 72.
