The amount of corn it would take to produce 25 gallons of ethanol, could feed a person for one year. And guess what ???? Ethanol gets worse mileage than gasoline.

Methanol is NOT Ethanol ! Ethanol is moonshine , just like the stuff grandpa made from the old still , and they used in the flex fuel cars made by FORD in the old days , until the Rockefeller s gave 4 million $ to the prohibition movement to make All Alcohol illegal including the fuel . Methanol is crap , its toxic , so please dont mix it up with ethanol , methanol will burn your eyes , ethanol will not , and who knows what the oil companies really blend with there fuel !

@mikehanoo33 : I will agree with you on we really have no real idea what the oil companys are brewing up, and were putting in our fuel tanks, I always said, they could brew up raid bug killer, and people would gladly put it in their tanks and burn it, and never care. gas is a great product for big business, you get what they give you, theirs no returns for a bad product, you have no idea what it really is.

By contrast, ethanol actually had a higher octane, produces a bearable (if not pleasant) smell when burned, and like a bottle of Everclear (200+ proof booze), it has no negative effects when spilled on human skin.

@mikehanoo33: one of the main problems with ethanol is it needs high compression to burn right, 14:1-16:1, the 7:1 most street driven factory cars now have just don't cut it. ethanol need a cyl pressure of over 250 psi to run right. another problem with ethanol is poor fuel mileage. you burn twice as much as gas, then it also rots all rubber hoses. racers that burn ethanol know this, but nobody seems to speak up. I have noticed we have a lot less bugs around, not a good thing.

@mikehanoo33 : the computer in todays cars has the timing factory set, the computer has to be worked on to be able to change the timing, the main problem is cyl pressure, not the timing for a street driven car. henry fords model T had such low compression it would burn just about anything flammable and fuel mileage and horse power was not even a passing thought back then. its vary hard, if impossible to start the average cold engine on 100% alcohol, I use gas to start it and run till warm up.

@mikehanoo33 : years ago when I was a kid, I wanted to try running alcohol in a lawn mower engine just to see what it would do, I think I was like 10 or something, I went down to future fuels of america, right across the street from galpin ford, they refused to sell to me, even had my father their, the guy told me the fumes and smell from both ethanol, and methanol, would be so bad, they would make me sick. yet, they were a test bed for a cleaner fuel. the paper work you had to sign was unreal .

@mikehanoo33 : I also grew up in los angeles in the 70's-80's and remember when the air was brown, today its a nasty white burning haze, the air stinks of a bad ethanol smell, the car was a pro street 55 chevy body, with a BB, we purchased the ethanol at the track, racing gas has a sweet smell to it, ethanol when burned bugged the hell out of your eyes, ask anyone who burns it. other problem is you can't see a flame in the day light like gasoline.

@CEFD11777 Why yes you are. Hemp oil is a very viable fuel. Plus, it requires no pollution control devices. Also, not only does it reduce dramatically the pollution emitted, it is a renewable energy source which is good for the land. The fibers are the strongest in nature and can replace timber and cotton. Cotton being a chemical plant with all the pesticides needed for it, and cotton is also much harder on the soil. Hemp being much stronger than timber. It makes sense all around. Unlike you.

@xandercage7681 Yes, you are correct. Every fuel station here in Brazil offers ethanol, and it is the most popular fuel in the country. We also have the "flex" technology, as we say, that is capable of mixing both gasoline and alcohol (as we normally say here, instead of ethanol). Natural gas is not available in every fuel station. There are specific stations that offers it. But alcohol... yes, everywhere. The air becomes lighter to breath, and cleaner.

The video shows the truth about the corn crop. Prices have risen and the forest is threatened. The area in mention is required for proper legislation to regulate the cultivated area and benefit the small farmer because rainfed maize grown in the rainy season is the livelihood of families. The corn is used for consumption of human and animal feed in the border area in southern Ecuador. If production goes into corn ethanol industry, farmers would be doubly affected ..

It's true that corn is DOWN OVER 40% from it's mid-year peak. But if you look at longer term prices for November corn you can see that it's still UP OVER 70% from 2004 and 2005. This is still causing food shortages in third world countries that had imported US grains in the past. As a result people are still destroying tropical forests for cropland. Recent articles appearing in Science Magazine are correct: ETHANOL has not only increased the price of corn, but it is INCREASING GLOBAL WARMING.

To make one gallon of ethanol. It takes, 1.2 Gallons of Petroleum, 450 pounds of corn, and 1,200 gallons of water. Interesting, and it only gets 1/3 of the energy that Regular gas can supply.

In Iowa "to make one gallon of ethanol" it takes .04 gallons of petroleum (coal & natural gas aren't included in this number), 1/3 a bushel of corn(about 3 lbs) and 3 gallons of water that is clean enough to be legally returned to a stream & when sold at E85 requires about 20%-30% more fuel. On what planet where the laws of physics have changed do you live on?

Until 1931, Ford' s Model T was designed to run on alcohol!Prohibition was funded by Rockefeller because he was in the oil business and needed a market for the waste product of its refining (gasoline). In Brazil (who imports no oil!) as far back as in 1984, 94.4% of all their cars ran on ethanol!

YES! Corn-ethanol doesn't reduce greenhouse gases and it's a big mistake - or a big scam - depending on our point of view.

Generally, the poor peasants in Ecuador do not own their own land - they "rent" the land from landowners for a year to plant corn. Traditionally, once the land is cleared it's "worth" more. But this may change with the new pro-environment constitution that was just passed in Ecuador that grants legal rights to "mother nature" and hopefully will protect trees!

No the peasants don't cut the tropical forest down the big land owners that pay them to harvest do. She said they need to have their animals to live but the owners of the plantation threw them out so they have no where to keep their animals that sustain them. Also, if they cut down the forest for the corn it doesn't help the green house effect so it doesn't do a thing for the environment.

global warming -> make ethanol to reduce greenhouse gases -> higher demand for corn -> price of corn goes up -> poor countries can't afford US corn -> peasants cut down tropical forest to grow corn -> increased greenhouse gases -> faster global warming
