I have Ernst palsy and the night I watched this video, I cried because I found out I'm not a freak. I'm perfectly normal. I just have a small flaw. now that I know there are other people like me I feel flawless
@Emsmiles14 same, mine is thinner too. That is honestly the most annoying part for me, becuase ive grown use to movement drawbacks, but one being shorter makes wearing any kind of long sleeve clothing annoying
@toothybrushman I also have erb's palsy and I agree with long sleeve clothing being annoying, my right sleeve fits just right while the left sleeve covers my whole hand or beyond.
Hi, I have erb's palsy in my left arm too i have almost the EXACT same disabilities as you, i was a big baby with the cord around my neck during birth . I have trouble lifting my arm and straightening it forwards. Lifting stuff is also a problem. My biggest problem and question is, how do you cope with people's insults and discrimination? Thanks and all the best.
@MTLXY Hey MTLXY, I'll try my best to answer although I haven't received a LOT discrimination towards my injury, but I know it to be a challenging thing for sure when it does happen.
What I have experienced, for the most part, is that once people understand what it is and see that I am ok with it, they are usually pretty respectful. So help them to see your arm as less of a disability and focus on the positives. People pick up on those attitudes. Help them understand your injury as well and
importantly that it doesn't make you any less of a person. Kind of like a friend (if i may) with a knee brace. It ONLY changes the way the might run.
Also, do those things you want that your arm might discourage, and modify it for you. People will see this, and hopefully respect it. And it will help you cope as well as you work around the injury. I hope this helps. it's obviously easier for me to say, but i hope this can give you at least some encouragement.
Emily, have you dated yet? Dating was a big worry for me since I was "diff' then other girls. I finally found a great man who loved me as I am. I have to say, the older you get, the less you care what anyone else thinks.
@mary61 haha, loaded question :) but encouraging. No I have not dated yet and it was something I was a little worried about when I was younger, but I think with age, like you said, I have learned to accept the way that I am, be happy and hope that my future man can do the same :)
My son is 6yrs old amd has obp. He has no hand movement, very little elbow and shoulder movement. I have seen children like this a shriners hospital in philadelphia where he is treated.
Hi....im 29 yrs old and I also have Erb's palsy. My right shoulder, arm, and hand are affected. I have never met another person with this......i wish you lots of luck.
Emily, I am 49 and have yet to meet another person with Erb's Palsy. My arm, hand, fingers, etc. are affected EXACTLY like yours. My father told me that I had facial problems as well as left leg problems at birth as well. I played the piano, clarinet, was a waitress and was never treated any different than anyone else at home. I have needed a few surgeries. I'd love to talk to you!
@mary61 Hey Mary! While doing the interviews I learned that It is common for babies to have facial damage as well (as was my eye) but often even more and it was interesting to talk about. That is cool that you were a waitress, thats something I would think I would have more difficult with but I don't know for sure. To be honest, a year before I made this, I didn't even realize that this sort of injury had a name, so it is really cool now to talk to and hear about other peoples experiences!
Very inspirational. My daughter has Erb's Palsy in her right arm and shoulder. Amazingly doing gymnastics has helped her tremendously. She even competes. We have lots of videos of her on my page. Good luck to you!
Would be great if you could come to the UBPN Camp in Missouri next year! It's a great place to meet more OBPI kids/adults :) I have been to 2 camps and love it.
